Prob. # 1] There are required 2000 kW of compressor power to handle air adiabatically from
1 atmosphere, 27 oC, to 305 kPaa. The initial air velocity is 20 m/s and the final velocity is 85
m/s. a) If the compression is isentropic, find the compressor capacity, in m 3/s. b) If the
compression process is irreversible adiabatic to a temperature of 160 oC, with the capacity
found in a), determine the compressor power input, in Hp. (20 points)
Prob. # 2] Water, recirculating at the rate of 60 lb/min around the cylinder of an air compressor,
enters at 70 oF and leaves at 80 oF, all heat received coming from the air in the cylinder. The
compression is internally reversible from 14.7 psia, 80 oF, to 330 oF. For an air flow of 50
lb/min, find a) the work in Hp, b) Change of entropy for the air, c) the available part of the heat
with respect to the air and again as it was received by the water if to = 60 oF.
(20 points)
Prob. # 3] There are compressed 6.5 m3/min of oxygen from 1 atmosphere, 27 oC, to 315 kPaa
by 36 cm x 36 cm single-stage, single-acting, compressor operating at 120 rpm. If
compression and re-expansion processes are isentropic, find a) the volumetric efficiency, and
b) the compressor power input in Hp. (20 points)
Prob. # 4] Find the volumetric efficiency and estimate the approximate clearance of a 46-cm
x 46-cm, double-acting, single cylinder compressor that is turning at 150 rpm and pumping 20
m3/min of a gas from 1 atmosphere, 27 oC, to 680 kPaa. Compression and re-expansion are
polytropic with pV1.32 = C. (20 points)
