You have recently started an internship at an educational
charity.
The director of the charity is interested in how big data and
data analytics might be used by the organisation to improve
Vocational Scenario or
the way they target their efforts so that the work they do can
Context
be as effective as possible.
Following the report, you produced on the topic the director
has asked you to look into the statistical tools and techniques
which can be used to analyse data.
The charity is looking into how GCSE results in England differ
by Local Authority and also by gender.
The data on the number of pupils who achieve at least 5
GCSE grade A*-C, can be found here:
equivalent-results-in-england-2012-to-2013-revised
You should use this data to carry out an analysis and
evaluation using:
• Routine and non-routine central tendency
• Dispersion and probability distribution operations,
Task 1 • Routine and Non-routine regression operations
identifying those Local Authorities, which perform
better than average and those which perform worse
and how this differs by gender.
You will write up the results of your investigations in the
form of a report.
Your report needs to show that you have:
• Tabulated grouped data and generate fully annotated
pie charts, bar charts and histograms.
• Accurately calculated representative values for central
tendency and evaluate the usefulness of the values in
relation to the distribution of data.
• Accurately calculated variance, standard deviation,
range, interquartile and inter-percentile values of
normally distributed data and explained the meaning
of each. You have carried out a t-test on two sets of
data and evaluate the relevance of the result.
• Used the given data to accurately determine the
equation of linear regression and correlation
coefficient.
• Compared the predicted value of the dependent
variable with the value obtained from the graph for a
non-measured value, in relation to the value of the
correlation coefficient.
• Justified the choice of regression type for a non-linear
relationship, such as a power relationship.
Your report should be easily understood by a third party with
a mathematical background and should include correct use
of mathematical terminology and application of relevant
units.
Results of the analysis.

You have recently started work as an IT development trainee
at a car dealership which sells new cars from 6 sites across
Southern England.
The directors of the company are considering either changing
the car manufacturers for which they are a dealer or adding
new dealerships for different car manufacturers.
As part of their deliberations on this very significant change to
Vocational Scenario or their business they what to know which car manufacturers
Context have been increasing the numbers of new registrations and
which have been declining over recent years.
They have asked you to investigate this and prepare a report
for them.
New car registration data can be found here:
cs
You will need to:
• Prepare the raw data by extracting only new
registrations for cars, removing those manufactures
that only sell a very small number of cars, totalling up
the registration numbers by make and combining the
data for several years.
• Accurately analyse the data by applying routine and
Task 1 non-routine statistical, probability and mathematical
operations.
• Create reports (one detailed version for the directors
and one summary version for the branch sales
managers) in which you evaluate the outcomes of
your analysis and produce accurate, valid and
relevant judgements from the analysis of the dataset.
Your reports should:
• Formulate a clear, specific, well-defined question to
identify what you want to know.
• Select methods to generate valid, accurate and
relevant information.
• Include appropriate and accurate presentation of
data, calculations of central measures, dispersion and
probability functions, comparison of data sets and
regression.
Your work should be easily understood by a third party with
a mathematical background and use of mathematical
terminology and application of relevant units correctly.
