UCHRONIC ALTERNATE FANTASY GAME

IMAGINARY WORLDS SINCE 1986

Edo The Empire of the Dead 2

history
We are in a medieval Japanese era diverging from
reality, where in the spring of 1607, the Tokugawa
Emperor Leyasu appointed just three years ago,
having unified the country at great cost of
resources and men, urgently receives emissaries
from the south. .
Spies and infiltrators report that the Joseon,
present-day Korea, intends to take advantage of
the moment of weakness to attack. Imperial ships
have long remained in ports, and few vessels
venture to the Korean coast.vBy now Japan is
isolated and imported goods and catch are scarce.
The generals organize defenses but advise the
emperor to abandon the southern districts to
reinforce the north and the capital. .
The emperor realizes by having a picture of the forces on the ground that there is no
hope and that soon half the country will fall into the hands of the conquerors.
Nevertheless, he has the defenses prepared. He activates the mandatory prescription,
even though we are close to the rice harvest and this will mean hunger for the people.
And he consults his astrologers. The emperor has long studied astrologers and loves
alchemy and magic, so much so that he often falls victim to charlatans.
Among them is an elderly alchemist named Zei Dongh, who says he comes from the
Wondang Mountain range and is said to be able to provide the emperor with an
invincible army of immortals. Despite the opposition of senior advisors, Tokugawa is
charmed by the alchemist. He has a tower set up outside the citadel and despite the
generals' opposition, orders that 200 of the kingdom's best soldiers be made
available. In the meantime the situation in the south precipitates, the Joseon soldiers
attacked as planned in the south and in a short time captured two unfortified cities.
Although the alchemist pleads that time is needed, Tokugawa confronts him with a
choice.
Either the soldiers will be ready to march within three days or he will be the one to lose
his life. The alchemist arranges everything, and on the deadline, summoned by the
emperor, he shows up with a small glass bowl with a black liquid inside.
Alleging that a single drop in the eye of any soldier will be enough, and he will have
herculean strength and fight without being affected by the
blows. And only a well-aimed direct blow to the heart or head
could kill him. Unfortunately in the short time had finding
the necessary flower was difficult and it has enough
preparation for just 50 soldiers. And it must be taken just
before meeting the enemy. The emperor is half satisfied, but
the old man indicates that 50 soldiers will be enough to kill
5,000 Joseon soldiers. The emperor orders the old man to
leave together with the soldiers and give the preparation
himself. But the old man citing a problem with his legs
considers this impossible. But he offers to explain it to the
doctors following the soldiers. Although unaccustomed to
rejection the emperor resigns himself. He informs the
generals of the new weapon and sets off the 3,000-strong
contingent with volunteers in tow.

Edo The Empire of the Dead 3

After the euphoria
Thirteen days pass, and the emperor receives a soldier on horseback with news from
the front. General Sunzu Agemaky, informs His Imperial Majesty that the Joseon army
strong on the front at the Kitaiy Plain, has been arrested. The special 50-soldier unit
pounced on the enemy army, which failed to defeat them and after a short time was
beaten into retreat. It seems that many Joseon soldiers deserted and attacked their
own comrades.
The emperor is thrilled and has the alchemist summoned. But he is told that he has
been missing for two nights. But the joy is so great that he celebrates with the court.
But the next day a distraught soldier arrives after riding out of breath. He appears
dazed. News reports of the Joseon and Imperial armies having joined and given
themselves to looting every village adjoining the battle zone.
The next day a general even arrives along with cavalry. He skips all the usual rituals
before he can be admitted to the court and arrives by force into the emperor's private
halls.
The unthinkable happened, the special soldiers in a frenzy attacked the enemy, and
took to feeding on them, despite the blows they suffered, without stopping. Those
who fell prey to their insatiable hunger at dusk came to life and like animals attacked
anyone who was not like them. Living dead, who with mortal wounds incredibly at dusk
came to life and hunted the living. .
When the imperials saw their comrades coming at them
with Joseon's soldiers, they struggled but if bitten, after
a short time they would wriggle and rise up craving for
flesh. This generated panic, we fought all night, then at
the first hints of sunrise, they disappeared, retreated. I
gave orders to find them, and we found some seeds of
them buried in the earth, as if they had dug with their
bare hands to enter it. I gave orders to burn them, and
then I made what was left of the army retreat toward
the capital. I rode two days and two nights and here we
are. Everywhere the army is trying to stem this
contagion.
The emperor ordered to cut the country in two after
successive confirmations, a man-made canal of
mammoth proportions, at the same time raising a wall
destroying towns and villages to recover materials. Every
man, woman, elder or child is called to service.

This handbook
In the manual you will find all the directions for role-playing, in
the setting of Edo the Empire of the Dead. Suitable for three to
five players as stragglers from different fallen fortresses, plus
the Master who will describe to the players the evolution of the
story, what will happen, what they will see, events, interactions
with Npcs (Non-Player Characters). .
Through the application of the rulebook and the roll of the dice,
each time the players will attempt actions or fight, to give
randomness. Need several sheets of paper, some pencils, a
common six-sided die.

Edo The Empire of the Dead 4

The players
They will be a group of stragglers who have reached Edo,
soldiers, samurai or ronin from fallen castles, or deserters
from the Joseon army, who have faced the first clashes
with the dead. .
Edo will offer them shelter, but they cannot escape the
recruiters who will be inflexible. Every good man is recalled;
deserting brings death. .
To succeed in saving what can be saved, it will be
necessary to track down the most wanted man in the
kingdom the old alchemist. Paying attention to gangs of
stragglers who can kill by starvation, bring civilians to
safety in dangerous areas. Initially carry the voice of the
emperor and skim the infected.

Create THE Character

This game does not require the classic character sheet, but a simple sheet of paper is
sufficient, where it will be enough to enter the name of the Player and the Fictional
Character, and some parameters that will distinguish them. Life, Skills, Peculiarities
and Fate. (However, there is a player sheet at the back of the manual).

life
Roll 2D6+3 (Roll the six-sided die twice and add to the result the fixed value of 3, and
mark the total). If the life value during a fight reaches zero, the character dies and
must be remade. If the initial life points are less than 6 you will get an extra die of fate
points described below.

while having no modifier (they still have no malus). They will also have additional
training. Getting +1 in the specific skill. Throw 1D6.

Edo The Empire of the Dead 5

fate
Roll 1D6+1 for the number. Fate rolls will be usable to re-roll the die on a negative
outcome, until exhausted and cannot be replenished, unless given by the Master as a
reward for heroic or successful actions for a particular event. They should be used
sparingly, for important things.

PeculiaritY
They represent the uniqueness acquired during life. Gaining +1 in the specific skill.
Each player rolls 1D6. With 1-2-3 will obtain one of the below, 4-5-6 nothing. Skills that
can be used at the player's request.

1 steal Ability to deftly steal bags with money or objects, sneak into others' homes.
Adopt keys and picks and irons to force doors and windows.

presence of the dead, or reveal their whereabouts during the day.
3 Sixth sense Ability to warn or perceive in advance a danger., the development of a
dangerous situation. Adopt a water bowl to fix to see omens and images.

Veteran soldier
A soldier without special features who had killed more than 10 enemies will receive a
permanent non-cumulative +1 in the Aim skill, having no malus in the aimed shot that
without you will have by attempting it.

npcs non-player characters

Army members with different ranks, or fleeing civilians or court
members or servants, peasants, all will be played and used by
the Master, who can give them the connotation he prefers.
Npcs are important, so it should be avoided to make them die in
a stupid way, preferring the heroic one.
The more the Master can bring them to life by making them
real, the more realistic the game will be. Assigning them
different roles established by the plot. From the Emperor to a
jealous Dignitary who wants no rival at court, to the
enterprising Geisha who moves bribes and plots in the
shadows.

EQUIPment
As low-ranking soldiers they will have a pike and a few pieces of leather and bamboo
armor; as samurai the metal plates, Katana and several daggers must be added to the
armor. The Ronin wears no protection, accepting death after dishonoring himself
and his lineage. A robe, breeches and shoes of different order of value. Soldiers get
one koban a day, equal to the value of a couple of bowls of rice and a few side
dishes.
They receive rice and legume flour, and a pinch of salt a tinder.
Carrying a bowl, a spoon in the bag they carry. Armor that takes 1 to 3 damage only
goes to actual soldiers and officers or nobles. They usually range from Bamboo to
Bronze. A piece of armor struck drops 1 damage value until it becomes unserviceable.
There are armors for nobles or samurai with resistance 4.

Edo The Empire of the Dead 6

WEAPONS AND THEIR DAMAGE
Bow or Crossbow, are ranged
weapons, a quiver carries 8
arrows. While Knives, Swords,
Pikes are used in close combat. Explosives are very rare as the components of
gunpowder can no longer be researched and largely used for unification. They are
normally spheres of iron or stone.
PUGs 1 D staff 2D KATANA 1D6+2
kicks 2 D PUGNALE 3D bow/crossbow 1D6+1
spear 1D6+2 Explosive Every 100 g 10 D -2 each feet.
rifle 1D6+2 Distance 0-100 ft. Recharge time 3 turns.

Action and combat

Whenever you attempt an action that is not obvious, or to hit an enemy, roll 1D6 on the
table below. All actions are considered, as with combat all simultaneous, in the same
turn. Note: Getting 1 twice in two turns will cause the weapon to break.
action COMBat
1 DISaSTer Failed Unrepeatable Missed + Lose the next combat turn
2 FAil Failed Missed
3 Nothing Failed Missed
4 almost Poorly but with problems Smear hit one damage
5 SUCCESS Successful Calculate weapon damage
6 PERFEct Successful Advantage Weapon damage +1 damage

BONUS - MaLUS
Characters may have +1 Bonuses (improvements) or -1 Maluses (worsenings) given by
the Master depending on the situation, what is happening, where they are, and under
what conditions. A few examples:

BONUS Lifting a wounded comrade, with the help of a comrade. Not being in an
emergency situation, having the necessary time.
MaLUS Semi-hidden target, stepping in to help a wounded comrade amid dirt and
dust not having the skill. Smoke. Or a targeted hit without improvement.
damage location
To Master the specific locations, example: Head - Ear, Eye, Nose, Teeth. Without
exaggerating, a blow to the head, might involve an eye, an ear, some teeth not
necessarily certain death. A blow to the arm might see fingers involved etc etc.
1 HEAD 2 TORSO 3 RIGHT ARM

4 LEFT ARM 5 RIGHT LEG 6 LEFT LEG

MULTIPLE ATTACK
Should players or enemies, find themselves under a shower of arrows, spears, or
cannon fire. At each request of the Master, the players involved will throw 3D6, if they
get a double 1 they will be hit with related damage from the weapon.

Edo The Empire of the Dead 7

SPECIAL WEAPONS
All that array of weapons, Ninja Stars, throwing knives, Nunchaku, spiked
gloves, will be allowed to be entered with damage from 3 (fixed value) to 1D6+2
maximum at the Master's discretion. Any special weapon employed by masters
such as Ninja, assassins will give a usage malus. An attack by a group of
riflemen or archers on players is made successfully by assigning a number
from 1 to 6 to each player. Thereafter they roll 1D6 three times by appearing hit
for the number of times their number comes out. Against humans the same,
while against the dead you roll 1D6 for each undead and they fall helpless if hit
with 1 in the head, otherwise they ignore the damage. .

special damages
Drowning, Crushing, Burning, Falling, Starvation, Thirst, Frost, Disease will be
determined by the Master from time to time in number of D6 damage suffered from 1
to 9, depending on the state and severity of the situation. In case of poisons how
often will have to be repeated.

The undead the contagion

Soldiers, dignitaries, peasants, servants, in tattered robes from
nights of marching, heedless of brambles and quagmires, their
faces disfigured by disease with glazed eyes, advance
inexorably. They use no weapons, and are incapable of
reasoning, being pure instinct. They throw themselves like
madmen upon the living, lusting for human flesh, and bite off
chunks of flesh from their victims until death occurs, then
disregard them and seek other targets. .
The battered figure will soon be shrouded in tremors and
convulsions in total disregard of the dead present, only to rise
again and join the pack. The mutation has a variable time. They
have a -1 to all actions and except initially as soon as they are
infected, after 48 hours, they do not run, jump, or climb over,
but they are tireless and have a -2 to agility actions. To make matters worse, the rot
seems suspended, the flesh and muscles contract but remain functional. Their vision
declines, but hearing and smell remain active and they can smell blood even from a
distance. They can take damage that would be fatal to a living person, but they cease
to move, cutting or smashing their heads, and sometimes a full blow to the heart. The
dead for some reason during the day cease to move and instinctively hide so as not
to be found, at this stage that ceases at sunset they are for all intents and purposes
corpses. Nothing happens if they are exposed to the sun. .

fear
Whenever contact is made with undead a pure 1D6 test must
be taken where a 1 or 2 failure results in being paralyzed for
that turn. A subsequent failure may repeat this until you take
to react. However nothing that two slaps from a nearby
comrade cannot solve. Players as indicated are to be
considered military, or educated people. Peasants or even
nobles or court members, courtesans will have a -1 malus in
action and -2 combat in the presence of the dead.

Edo The Empire of the Dead 8

ZEI DONG
The alchemist, players willingly or unwillingly will be
recruited into the imperial army. Trying to flush them out
by day, and in this the dogs will be most useful by
searching in caves, under the earth or peat, under
devastated houses or in remote ruins, under the orders of
General Nigiro Okejaki. .
Who will form rapid units, provided with passes to
exchange horses and obtain supplies. The goal is to find
Zei Dong the alchemist and any trace of his presence.
Bring him alive to the presence of the emperor. The traces
take him to the fiefdoms of the South, where they will
gradually discover that he in fact belongs to one of the houses destroyed by
Tokugawa and fallen into disgrace. That he was aware of what he was doing. These
fiefdoms are evidently prepared for long sieges, and have erected great walls for
defense. It will not be easy to go in and bring it once found on the outside. And he
will always be one step ahead in escaping, narrowly escaping. Eventually in a stupid
way he will fall victim to his own spell by meeting a dead man
and becoming one of them. However, Joshiro Oda, Zei
Dong's real name, has transcribed on scrolls the knowledge
needed to stop the advance of the dead. How to make a
repellent that when sprinkled on the body causes the
undead to perceive no smell and mistake the living as their
own as long as they do not speak. And could produce it in
large quantities. And finally that there is a rare herb found
only in the south of the country, capable through fumigation
of accelerating the disintegration of dead flesh, and thus
eliminating that process that of suspending the putrefaction
of flesh, which the undead have. .

NINJAs
The emperor has hired four important Ninja families
from the mountains for the find. Assassins with the
same task of finding Zei Dong. .
The Ninjas will not be hostile to the players as long as
they do not get in their way. Capable of +1 bonus agility
in actions, and with permanent +1 Mira bonus, they
adopt unconventional weapons, throwing knives, or
stars, or daggers to kill quickly and silently. As well as
innovative crossbows, ropes, and ladders to move
across rooftops. Contrary to the common imagination,
which sees them dressed in black carrying out murders
in the night, they dress anonymously, appearing to be
servants or peasants, and prefer to prepare the ground
by viewing everything before attacking. And poison is definitely the best weapon,
because acting perhaps not immediately allows them to disappear. They master all
kinds of weapons perfectly; they have all the peculiarities. Yet strong from the
invisible defenses of their villages perched on impassable mountains, they are
completely indifferent to what is happening in the empire.

Edo The Empire of the Dead 9

Imperial army
Many Generals are noble, lacking field experience and
have not received full training except on battle texts.
Many upon the arrival of the dead will panic. However,
the army by burning dead when they are helpless by
scouting them out by setting up defenses succeeds in
slowing the advance toward Edo. But it is not
uncommon for outbreaks to flare up in the rear. Often
commanders abandon troops to fall back, leaving
command and officers to themselves. However, on
imperial orders, defenses are set up along the road to
Edo with cannons and trap pits, up to 5 meters deep
with sharp bamboo dried in the flames, made so hard.
But the pits filled and the dead continued to advance.
One after another the cities fall and endless snakes of evacuees aim for Edo, where
along the way they will discover that a man-made river is being completed to defend
the capital, and that none of them will be allowed to enter. The army from the towers
and ramparts erected along what used to be the approach is ready to stop with arrows
anyone who tries to approach. But it is only conjecture that the dead are pushing
toward Edo, in fact hunger drives them everywhere, into the countryside, into the rice
fields in search of every living thing. As luck would have it, although the animals are
preyed upon, when they are attacked they are not affected. The army is ordered to
prevent civilians from reaching Edo, and by force forces them to dig the defensive
canal and towers to exhaustion. The soldiers kill on the spot anyone who rebels
whoever they are.

The unliving
Among those who are bitten, an extraordinary thing will happen to about 1 in 1000.
They will be neither living nor dead. They will have the same peculiarities as the
undead but will bleed while being able to receive an absurd number of wounds. They
will be invisible to the rest of the dead, and as time passes they will have a special
influence on them. The same as we might have over a dog. An ascendancy over the
undead, who will obey elementary commands. A bite creates an undead if bitten, roll
the die three times and get at least two ones. There will remain, however, a hunger for
human flesh, for living tissue, and the more this is satiated the more they will lose all
empathy, feeling like gods. They will nevertheless appear
as human beings, only with dark circles under their eyes
and a sickly appearance. Some will take advantage to
rob and loot gold and jewelry in fallen mansions and
castles, attempting to eat common food, unsuccessfully,
and then follow the advance of the dead and search
having retained intellect for possible victims. Some
attempted to take their own lives in various ways,
unsuccessfully, so as not to succumb to hunger. Once
fed, they regain their vigor and have significantly greater
strength than a normal human being. However, if
encountered they will pose as refugees, escaping the
undead and cry for help and rescue. .

Edo The Empire of the Dead 10

first mission
Whether willingly or unwillingly, players except then
go into hiding, have no other choice to find shelter
and food than to get drafted. But not in the official
imperial army. In fact Tachegawa, has given very
specific orders to the generals and enlisted families
from the mountains for special tasks. However,
there is unease among the generals, including Nigiro
Okejaki, former commander of the southern
garrison. Who to stand out in the eyes of the
emperor decides to form small squads, often of
convicts or debtors or thieves who to avoid hard
labor or worse death by imposing unofficial duties.
Of course, they must not be conspicuous but go
unnoticed. Nigiro himself is in charge of enlistment.
A player will be assigned a pair of carrier pigeons. .
From time to time it will be necessary to write a report and receive orders. There are 17
organized Nigiro teams consisting of 4 or 6 individuals. .
Players will be given the mission to reach the territory beyond the canal construction
and report on the advance of the dead and try to make contact with the towns of Doj
and Ikidoji, where there is a military seal in each that is no longer providing reports. Six
days on foot or two on horseback will be needed. Initially on the routes they will
encounter small caravans of fugitives, usually badly armed with private guards of
provincial nobles trying to escape.
Close to the goal, an hour or so before sunset, a caravan more substantial than the
others advances on the road expeditiously. Some 30 soldiers with spears and swords,
and more than 80 peasants with families armed with spades. Eleven wagons,
provisions and victuals and two richly adorned. A noble family from the south for
sure, but what draws attention is one of the central carriages, covered by a black cloth
from which an unpleasant smell comes and muffled groans are heard. Stopping the
caravan on the road on either side of a grove, the guards will be hostile but an elderly
noblewoman gets out of the carriage, who snootily asks what made the carriages
stop. The players will have a pass from General Nigiro that allows them to make
checks.
The woman discovered her first-born son infected,
has had him and his daughter-in-law locked in the
carriage, and is proceeding to Edo to seek relief from
the emperor. .
Regardless of the players' objections or not, 1D6 +
1D6 + 1D6 + 1D6 waves of deaths arrive in small waves
from both sides of the forest. Confronted by the
unprepared guards. Each wave rolls 1D6 to determine
how many soldiers will flee as the dead arrive, and
another D6 to determine how many soldiers will be
infected.
Players will either participate or flee to their
destination. If they decide to eliminate those in the
carriage, the noblewoman, will open it by getting
bitten.
