This handbook
In the manual you will find all the directions for role-playing, in
the setting of Edo the Empire of the Dead. Suitable for three to
five players as stragglers from different fallen fortresses, plus
the Master who will describe to the players the evolution of the
story, what will happen, what they will see, events, interactions
with Npcs (Non-Player Characters). .
Through the application of the rulebook and the roll of the dice,
each time the players will attempt actions or fight, to give
randomness. Need several sheets of paper, some pencils, a
common six-sided die.
life
Roll 2D6+3 (Roll the six-sided die twice and add to the result the fixed value of 3, and
mark the total). If the life value during a fight reaches zero, the character dies and
must be remade. If the initial life points are less than 6 you will get an extra die of fate
points described below.
skills
All players will have received the basics such as soldiers, use swords and pikes, ride,
while having no modifier (they still have no malus). They will also have additional
training. Getting +1 in the specific skill. Throw 1D6.
PeculiaritY
They represent the uniqueness acquired during life. Gaining +1 in the specific skill.
Each player rolls 1D6. With 1-2-3 will obtain one of the below, 4-5-6 nothing. Skills that
can be used at the player's request.
1 steal Ability to deftly steal bags with money or objects, sneak into others' homes.
Adopt keys and picks and irons to force doors and windows.
2 training ìAbility to train animals, dogs or pigs, or cats to recognize and alert to the
presence of the dead, or reveal their whereabouts during the day.
3 Sixth sense Ability to warn or perceive in advance a danger., the development of a
dangerous situation. Adopt a water bowl to fix to see omens and images.
Veteran soldier
A soldier without special features who had killed more than 10 enemies will receive a
permanent non-cumulative +1 in the Aim skill, having no malus in the aimed shot that
without you will have by attempting it.
EQUIPment
As low-ranking soldiers they will have a pike and a few pieces of leather and bamboo
armor; as samurai the metal plates, Katana and several daggers must be added to the
armor. The Ronin wears no protection, accepting death after dishonoring himself
and his lineage. A robe, breeches and shoes of different order of value. Soldiers get
one koban a day, equal to the value of a couple of bowls of rice and a few side
dishes.
They receive rice and legume flour, and a pinch of salt a tinder.
Carrying a bowl, a spoon in the bag they carry. Armor that takes 1 to 3 damage only
goes to actual soldiers and officers or nobles. They usually range from Bamboo to
Bronze. A piece of armor struck drops 1 damage value until it becomes unserviceable.
There are armors for nobles or samurai with resistance 4.
BONUS - MaLUS
Characters may have +1 Bonuses (improvements) or -1 Maluses (worsenings) given by
the Master depending on the situation, what is happening, where they are, and under
what conditions. A few examples:
BONUS Lifting a wounded comrade, with the help of a comrade. Not being in an
emergency situation, having the necessary time.
MaLUS Semi-hidden target, stepping in to help a wounded comrade amid dirt and
dust not having the skill. Smoke. Or a targeted hit without improvement.
damage location
To Master the specific locations, example: Head - Ear, Eye, Nose, Teeth. Without
exaggerating, a blow to the head, might involve an eye, an ear, some teeth not
necessarily certain death. A blow to the arm might see fingers involved etc etc.
1 HEAD 2 TORSO 3 RIGHT ARM
MULTIPLE ATTACK
Should players or enemies, find themselves under a shower of arrows, spears, or
cannon fire. At each request of the Master, the players involved will throw 3D6, if they
get a double 1 they will be hit with related damage from the weapon.
special damages
Drowning, Crushing, Burning, Falling, Starvation, Thirst, Frost, Disease will be
determined by the Master from time to time in number of D6 damage suffered from 1
to 9, depending on the state and severity of the situation. In case of poisons how
often will have to be repeated.
fear
Whenever contact is made with undead a pure 1D6 test must
be taken where a 1 or 2 failure results in being paralyzed for
that turn. A subsequent failure may repeat this until you take
to react. However nothing that two slaps from a nearby
comrade cannot solve. Players as indicated are to be
considered military, or educated people. Peasants or even
nobles or court members, courtesans will have a -1 malus in
action and -2 combat in the presence of the dead.
NINJAs
The emperor has hired four important Ninja families
from the mountains for the find. Assassins with the
same task of finding Zei Dong. .
The Ninjas will not be hostile to the players as long as
they do not get in their way. Capable of +1 bonus agility
in actions, and with permanent +1 Mira bonus, they
adopt unconventional weapons, throwing knives, or
stars, or daggers to kill quickly and silently. As well as
innovative crossbows, ropes, and ladders to move
across rooftops. Contrary to the common imagination,
which sees them dressed in black carrying out murders
in the night, they dress anonymously, appearing to be
servants or peasants, and prefer to prepare the ground
by viewing everything before attacking. And poison is definitely the best weapon,
because acting perhaps not immediately allows them to disappear. They master all
kinds of weapons perfectly; they have all the peculiarities. Yet strong from the
invisible defenses of their villages perched on impassable mountains, they are
completely indifferent to what is happening in the empire.
The unliving
Among those who are bitten, an extraordinary thing will happen to about 1 in 1000.
They will be neither living nor dead. They will have the same peculiarities as the
undead but will bleed while being able to receive an absurd number of wounds. They
will be invisible to the rest of the dead, and as time passes they will have a special
influence on them. The same as we might have over a dog. An ascendancy over the
undead, who will obey elementary commands. A bite creates an undead if bitten, roll
the die three times and get at least two ones. There will remain, however, a hunger for
human flesh, for living tissue, and the more this is satiated the more they will lose all
empathy, feeling like gods. They will nevertheless appear
as human beings, only with dark circles under their eyes
and a sickly appearance. Some will take advantage to
rob and loot gold and jewelry in fallen mansions and
castles, attempting to eat common food, unsuccessfully,
and then follow the advance of the dead and search
having retained intellect for possible victims. Some
attempted to take their own lives in various ways,
unsuccessfully, so as not to succumb to hunger. Once
fed, they regain their vigor and have significantly greater
strength than a normal human being. However, if
encountered they will pose as refugees, escaping the
undead and cry for help and rescue. .
