Mutombo : Hello, Kalenga.


Kalenga : Hello, Mutombo. How are you?
Mutombo : Fine, thanks. (pointing at Soki) Who’s this?
Kalenga : It’s Soki.
Mutombo : Hello, Soki. My name’s mutombo.
Soki : Hello, Mutombo. Are you going to school?
Mutombo : Yes, I am. Are you in the first form?
Soki : Yes, I am. Are you in Kalenga’s form?
Mutombo : No, I’m not. I’m a new boy. I’m in the first form too.

Kalenga : Have you got your pens and pencils in your bag?
Soki : Yes, I have a new pen and three exercise-books.
Mutombo : I’ve got my exercise-books in my school-bag too.
(opening his bag) Look at them!
Kalenga : Look! There’s our school. There are some boys
and girls standing outside.
Soki : What’s the time, Kalenga?
Kalenga : It’s twenty past seven. Let’s go in.
Lesson 2
In the classroom
Soki, Mutombo, Banda (a new boy), Mr. Kasongo (the English
teacher)

Mutombo : This is my desk, Soki. Where’s yours?


Soki : Here it is. Look, it’s behind yours.
Banda : (coming into the classroom) hello!
Soki : (pointing at Banda) Who are you?
Banda : I’m Banda.
Soki : Oh, I’m Soki. Have you got your exercisebooks?
Banda : No, I haven’t. I haven’t got any.
Mutombo : I’ve got five. Look! Here they are on my desk.

Soki : Where’s the teacher?


Mutombo : I don’t know.
Banda : He’s coming. Look! There he is.
Soki : He’s got a big bag in his hand.

Mr. Kasongo : (coming into the classroom) Good morning,


boys and girls.
Boys and girls : (standing up) good morning, sir
Mr. Kasongo: Sit down, everybody. I’m Mr. Kasongo, your English
teacher. Here’s your time­table. We have English
on Mondays and Tuesdays at twenty past ten. On
Thursdays and Fridays at ten past nine and on
Saturdays at half past seven. Here are your
English text­books. Now let’s do some work.
Lesson 3
Break
Soki, Mutombo, Banda, Kalenga, Okito (a fourth-form boy).

Mutombo : Look, Banda! There’s a pen on the floor. Pick it up!


Okito : (coming in) Hey! Who are you? What are you doing?
Give me that pen! It’s mine!
Banda : Ouch! Don’t pull my hair! Don’t push me.
Mutombo : Don’t take that pen. It isn’t yours.

(Soki and Kalenga are standing outside)


Soki : Look at that big boy pulling Banda’s hair.
Kalenga : Where?
Soki : In the classroom. Look! There they are.
Kalenga : That big boy wearing a khaki shirt and trousers?
Soki : Yes. Who is he?
Kalenga : That’s Okito. He’s in the fourth form. I don’t like him.
Soki : Look! He’s taking Banda’s pen.

Kalenga : Oh dear! There’s the bell. It’s twenty past ten.


Soki : When do we go home for lunch?
Kalenga : At one o’clock, and we have games in the afternoon at
four o’clock.
Soki : Look! Everybody’s going into the classroom.
Kalenga : Yes, your French teacher’s coming.
Soki : Where is she?
Kalenga : There she is. The tall woman in the red dress.
Soki : Well, I’m going. Goodbye, Kalenga.
Kalenga : Goodbye, Soki.
Lesson 4
Going home
Soki, Mutombo, Banda,Mr. Rissassi (the Maths teacher).
(Banda, Mutombo and Soki are having a maths lesson).

Mr. Rissassi: Ah, good. There’s the bell. It’s one o’ clock.
Put your things in your school-bag.
Mutombo, put the chalk in the box, and bring me the box,
please. Banda, here’s the duster. Go and clean the black
board. Goodbye, see you tomorrow.
Banda : Where’s my sandal?
Mutombo : What color is it?
Banda : It’s black.
Soki : There’s a sandal under the teacher’s table.
Banda : Where?
Soki : Look – there! Is it yours?
Banda : Oh yes, it is.
Mutombo : Here you are – take it.
Banda : Thank you, Mutombo.
Mutombo : Come on, let’s go home now.

Soki : Here’s Kalenga.


Kalenga : Hello. How are you?
Mutombo : Fine, thanks. Are you going home?
Kalenga : No, I’m not. I don’t go home for lunch.
I have lunch at school.
See you this afternoon. Goodbye.
Mutombo : This afternoon?
Kalenga : Yes, we have games on Mondays afternoon.
Mutombo : Oh, good see you this afternoon.
Soki : Come on, Mutombo. Let’s go home for lunch.
Lesson 5
The Maths lesson
(Banda, Massamba are outside Massamba’s classroom).

Banda : What’s the time, Massamba.


Massamba : It’s quarter past twelve.
Banda : Oh, it’s Maths now. Is Mr. Rissassi in my classroom?
Massamba : Yes. Look, there he is. He’s drawing on the black board.
You’re going to be late.
Banda : Oh dear! Goodbye, Massamba.

Mr. Rissassi : Listen – in a minute, you’re going to draw a circle in your


exercise­books. Look at me ­ I’m going to it on the black
board first… Who are you, boy? Why are you late?
Banda : (running into the classroom) I’m Banda, sir. I’m sorry, sir.
Are you … are you going to punish me, sir?
Mr. Rissassi : No, I’m not going to punish you this time.
Go and sit down, and get out your exercise-book.
Now, look at the blackboard, everybody.

Soki : (putting her hand up) Please, sir, are you going to give us
any home work today?
Mr . Rissassi : No, I’m not – but tomorrow I’m going to give you some
Geometry exercises.
Mutombo : Are you going to have Geometry on Friday too, sir?
Mr Rissassi : No, we aren’t. On Friday we’re going to have Algebra. On
Saturday we’re going to have some Arithmetic. Now,
come on everybody, pick up your pencils, open your
exercise-books, and draw a big circle on the first page.
Lesson 6
Buying some groundnuts
Mutombo, Kalenga, a woman selling groundnuts.

(Kalenga and Mutombo are going home).


Kalenga : Hello, Mutombo.
Mutombo : Hello, Kalenga.
Kalenga : Are you going home?
Mutombo : Yes, I am. I’m going to buy some groundnuts first.
Kalenga : Well, come on. I’m going to have my supper in ten
minutes. Where are you going to buy them?
Mutombo : There’s a woman over there. She’s got a lot of
groundnuts.
Kalenga : That young woman? She hasn’t got many groundnuts.
Mutombo : Yes, she has. Come on.

Mutombo : How much are those groundnuts?


Woman : They’re 10 makutas or 15 makutas for a big tin.
Mutombo : That’s very expensive. There aren’t many groundnuts in
your tin.
Woman : Look, it’s late now. There aren’t many woman selling
groundnuts now.
Mutombo : I haven’t got much money – here’s 5 makutas.
Woman : They’re very good groundnuts. Give me 8 makutas.
Mutombo : All right, here you are.
Kalenga : Well, come on now, Mutombo. I haven’t got much time. I’ve
got a lot of work to do this evening. Have you got much?
Mutombo : I’ve got a lot of homework, but I’m not going to do it
now, because I’m tired. First I’m going to have my supper,
and then I’m going to bed. Here, have some groundnuts!
Lesson 7
Lunch at school
Okito, Dzubu (a fourth-form boy).
(Dzubu is sitting on the big table in the school dining-hall).

Okito : (comingin): What’s for lunch today?


Dzubu : Pounded yam and pepper soup.
Okito : Oh, no! We have pounded yam every day in this school.
Dzubu : Oh, come and sit down. Here’s your plate.
Okito : Hey, where’s my knife?
Dzubu : I don’t know. Here you are – you can have mine.
Okito : Thanks. Now, where’s my fork?
Dzubu : Your fork’s by the bowl of yam. Can’t you see it?
Okito : Oh, yes. Where’s the spoon for the soup?
Dzubu : Here it is.
Okito : No! That’s too small. I want to have a lot of soup to day.
Dzubu : Is this spoon big enough?
Okito : Yes, that’s all right.

Dzubu : Is the soup hot enough for you?


Okito : (eating some soup) Wow! It’s too hot for me. I can’t eat that!
Dzubu : It isn’t too hot. I can’t eat it. Here, drink some water. Give me
your glass.
Okito : Thank you. That’s enough.
Dzubu : Have you go enough pound yam? You haven’t got much on your
place.
Okito : No, but there’s a football match this afternoon. When I eat a
lot of yam: I can’t play football well.
Dzubu : Well, look at Tshibangu! He can’t play football well, and he eats
two bowls of yam every day!
Lesson 8
At the football ground
Kalenga, Mutombo, a boy from school.
(The boys are at the football match. It’s raining)

Kalenga : Come on, Tshibangu! Kick the ball, man! Run!


Mutombo : Tshibangu can’t run fast.
Kalenga : Yes, he is too fast to score goals.
Banda : Look! Can you see that player from the Grammar School?
He’s going to sore!
Kalenga : No, he isn’t. He’s too slow! Okito’s got it.

Mutombo : They haven’t got many good players in their team today.
Boy from the Grammar School : Yes, we have! We’ve got a lot of good
players. Your ground too wet for us. We can’t play well on
a wet ground.
Kalenga : Are there many boys from your school here this afternoon?
Boys from the Grammar School : No, not many. A lot of boys come when
it’s fine, but it’s too cold for them this afternoon

Banda : Come on, Okito! Run! There’s a player behind you.


Kalenga : Hey, we haven’t got much time!
Mutombo : Gosh yes, the teacher’s looking at his watch.
Banda : He’s going to blow his whistle in a minute.
Mutombo : Kick the ball, Okito! Come on, kick it!
Banda : Goal!
Kalenga : Goal!
Mutombo : And there’s the whistle!
Lesson 9
Can you do my homework, dad?
Soki, Soki’s mother, Soki’s father.
(Soki is at home. She’s doing her homework).

Mother : Soki … Soki, can you hear me? Come and help me to pound
some yams, and then go and get some water from the well.
Soki : Oh, Mum – must I help you? I’ve got a lot of work to do for
school.
Mother : Work? You aren’t working! You’re reading a book! You read too
many books!
Father : Now, listen to me, mother! The girl’s at school. She can’t help
you. She’s got too much home work to do.
Mother : Well, all right. But she must work hard at school. It’s very
expensive, and we haven’t got much money.

Father : What home work are you doing, Soki?


Soki : Geometry, dad. This exercise is too difficult for me. I don’t
understand it. Can you help me dad?
Father : You mustn’t ask me, Soki. Ask the teacher tomorrow morning.
Soki : Oh, please, dad! It’s a very long exercise, and I must do it this
evening. The teacher is going to mark it tomorrow.
Father : All right.

Father : Well, now, show your text book. Hmm…yes…hmm…


Soki : Can’t you do it, Dad?
Father : Well … hmm … it’s not very difficult … hmm … You must draw A

Soki : Oh thank you, Dad! Now I can go to bed!
