TASK ONE:
Statement of Problem

Research Question: What is the impact of Trinibad Music on youth violence at our
school East Mucurapo Secondary School?

3
4
TASK TWO:
Reason for Selecting Area Of Research

Music plays an important role in the socialisation of children and adolescence and is a true
reflection of our environment. It is influenced by one’s surroundings, experiences, culture
and interactions at all levels. Popular music is present almost everywhere and it is easily
available through radio, the internet and television. Trinibad music is a new wave of music
that is sweeping our nation and has been influenced by ‘Jamaican Dancehall Music’. Many
people think that the lyrical content of Trinibad music is having a negative impact on the
youths of our country, resulting in a rise in crime and youth violence. Others, as a reflection
of the reality of our society, such as the prevalence of gang violence, drugs, poverty and
youth delinquency.
We chose the impact of Trinibad music on youth violence as our topic because at our school
it is reflective of their daily lives and the communities to which they belong. Trinibad music
has a major influence on youths because it incorporates local slang, Soca, chutney, calypso
and dancehall beats while reflecting the anger, anxiety and violence of our everyday reality.
To many its lyrical content is considered negative and can be a motivator for the youths to
partake in the activities these artists sing about. Hopefully, on the completion of this research
project we would be able to bring out a more positive side to this music and put a stop to
youth violence in our school.

TASK THREE:
Method of Investigation

To investigate this problem, we have decided to use printed questionnaires, in order to obtain
the information for our survey. The questionnaire is a tool used for collecting data and have a
number of advantages such as:

● It takes littles to no time to be completed.

● It is cost effective
● It can be done at the accessibility of the persons required to have it completed.
● A large amount of information can be collected from a large group of persons
in a short period of time.
● It ensures the respondents anonymity.
● The data provided can be quantified easily.
In our questionnaire there are five biographical data questions, open-ended questions and
closed questions.

Task Five:
Procedures of Data Collection

East Mucurapo Secondary School has approximately eight hundred and sixty (860)
students. We have decided to choose the sample by random selection which gives each class
an equal opportunity to be chose. A total of 25 questionnaires were prepared for distribution
to the students of form 3-6. It was expected that all the questionnaires would be completed.
On Friday 23rd of February we visited the form five (5) block at 9:45am and handed out
thirteen (13) questionnaires, we chose the first 13 students who were available as we entered
the classroom. On that same day at 11:50 am we visited the form six classroom and chose the
first six (6) students who were available. At about 12:15pm we then visited form 3-6 and 4-1
where we evenly distributed the remaining six (6) questionnaires to the students of both
classes. At approximately 12:30pm we were able to get back all the questionnaires and the
task was completed.

11
Task Six:
Presentation of Data

A total of 25 questionnaires were distributed to 4 different forms, out of which all 25 were
returned. Of these responses (10) or 40% were females and (15) or 60% were male.

(QUESTION 5)

(Figure 1)
It can be shown in the above pie chart that (4) people or 16% said 1-2 times a week, (12) or
48% said 3-4 times a week (3) or 12% said 5-6 times a weekend (6) or 24% said every day.
Therefore, the mode response was 3-4 times a week.

12
(QUESTION 13)

(FIGURE 2)
It can be shown in the pie chart above that an equal number of (6) or 24% both chose the
promotion of gangs and the negative (illegal) actions of the artist. Nine
(9) or 36% chose the negative messages the lyrics promote and (4) or 16% chose they
encourage them to take part in criminal activities. Therefore the model answer is “The
negative messages the artist promotes.

13
(QUESTION 14)

(FIGURE 3)
It can be shown in the bar graph above that (4) or 16% equally chose to become better role
models, youth development programs and banned Trinibad music. Five (5) or 20% chose to
improve their choice of lyrics and (8) or 32% chose to stop associating themselves with
gangs.

14
Task Seven:
Analysis and Interpretation of Data

Out of the 25 completed questionnaires, the majority (15) or 60% of the students were males
and the other (10) or 40% of the students were females. Five (5) or 20% were Christian, (8)
or 32% were Islam, (7) or 28% were Roman Catholic, (4) or 16% were Hindu and (1) or 4%
chose others and are non-believers. Nine (9) or 36% were African Decent, (13) or 52% were
Mixed Descent and the remaining (3) or 12% were East Indian. This is significant because it
is a reflection of most of the student body which is mostly students of African descent.
In Figure (1) the question asked “How often do you listen to Trinibad music? “Four (4)
people or 16% said 1-2 times a week, (12) or 48% said 3-4 times a week (3) or 12% said 5-6
times a weekend (6) or 24% said every day. Therefore, the mode response was 3-4 times a
week. These students were Christian and of African Descent.
In figure (2) the question asked “What do you think influences youth violence through
Trinibad music?” Six (6) or 24% both chose the promotion of gangs and the negative (illegal)
actions of the artist. Nine (9) or 36% chose the negative messages the lyrics promote and (4)
or 16% chose they encourage them to take part in criminal activities. Majority of the students
that said the Negative messages the lyrics promote were mainly Roman Catholic and of
Mixed descent.
In figure (3) the question was asked “What do you think can be put in place to reduce the
influence of Trinibad music on youths? “Four (4) or 16% equally chose to become better role
models, youth development programs and banned Trinibad music. Five (5) or 20% chose to
improve their choice of lyrics and (8) or 32% chose to stop associating themselves with
gangs. The modal answer was stop associating themselves with gangs. This reflects a national
norm where it is believed that most Trinibad artists associate themselves with a gang
consigned to them, and is to be believed that this is one of the reasons our crime rate is so
high.

15
Task Eight:
Statement of findings

From the questionnaire these are the findings;

● Most students think that Trinibad music promotes negative messages.

● The main influence of Trinibad music on youth violence is the negative messages
being promoted in the lyrics.
● Many students are in an aggressive mood when they listen to this genre of music.

16
Task Nine
Recommendation and Implement Strategy

The following are two(2) recommendations from the findings for reducing the negative
impact of trinidad music on youth violence:
● Youth development programs in our school
● artist should stop association themselves with gangs
