Title: Causes of Sudden Natural Death: An Autopsy Retrospective Study
Background: Sudden natural death (SND) refers to unexpected death from natural causes, often
occurring without prior symptoms or warning signs. Autopsy examination is crucial in determining the
underlying cause of SND.
Aims and Objectives:
1. To determine the most common causes of sudden natural death in a retrospective autopsy study.
2. To identify demographic and clinical factors associated with specific causes of SND.
3. To analyze the role of pre-existing medical conditions in contributing to SND.
Methodology:
1. Study Design: Retrospective autopsy study.
2. Study Population: All autopsies performed at govt medical college over a period of five years from
aug 2019 t0 aug 2024
3. Inclusion Criteria:
- Autopsy examination performed.
- Cause of death determined to be natural.
- Death occurred suddenly and unexpectedly.
4. Exclusion Criteria:
- Cause of death cannot be determined to be non-natural (e.g., homicide, suicide, accident).
- Death occurred after a prolonged illness or hospitalization.
- Unidentified or decomposed bodies
5. Data Collection:
- Demographic information (age, sex, occupation).
- Clinical history (pre-existing medical conditions, medications( if available).
- Autopsy findings (cause of death, underlying conditions).
- Toxicology and laboratory results (if available).
6. Data Analysis:
- Descriptive statistics for demographic and clinical variables
- Chi-square tests or Fisher’s exact test for categorical variables.
- Frequency analysis for causes of SND.
-Logistic regression analysis to identify factors associated with specific causes of SND.
T-tests or Mann-Whitney U tests for continuous variables.
Autopsy Protocol:
1. External Examination: Document any visible injuries, scars, or abnormalities.
2. Internal Examination: Perform a thorough examination of all organs and systems.
3. Histopathological Examination: Examine tissue samples from relevant organs.
4. Toxicology and Laboratory Tests: Perform relevant tests (e.g., blood chemistry, toxicology screens).
Causes of Sudden Natural Death:
1. Cardiovascular: Myocardial infarction, cardiac arrhythmia, aortic dissection.
2. Cerebrovascular: Stroke, cerebral hemorrhage.
3. Respiratory: Pulmonary embolism, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
4. Other: Sudden death from other natural causes (e.g., epilepsy, diabetic ketoacidosis).
Ethics and Confidentiality:
1. Institutional Review Board (IRB) Approval: Obtain approval from the IRB before commencing the
study.
2. Confidentiality: Ensure all data and records are kept confidential and anonymous.
Timeline:
1. Data Collection: 2months
2. Data Analysis:2 months
3. Manuscript Preparation:2 months
4. Submission and Publication: 1 months
Expected Outcomes:
1. Identification of Common Causes: Determine the most common causes of SND in the study
population.
2. Demographic and Clinical Factors: Identify demographic and clinical factors associated with specific
causes of SND.
3. Pre-Existing Medical Conditions: Analyze the role of pre-existing medical conditions in contributing to
SND.
1. Data Collection: 2months
2. Data Analysis: 2 months
