Reading Comprehension
Climate is the average weather in a place over many years. Climate change refers to
long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns in specific areas. These shifts
can be natural, but the rapid climate change we are now seeing is mainly caused by
humans using oil, gas and coal for their homes, factories and transport. The world is
30 now warmer than it was in the 19th Century and the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere
has been risen by 50%. Temperature rises must slow down if we want to avoid the
worst consequences of climate change.
However, unless further action is taken, the planet could still warm more by the end
of this century. If nothing is done, scientists think that global warming could exceed
35 more in the future, leading to devastating heat waves, millions losing their home to
rising sea level and irreversible loss of plant and animal species. With further
warming, some regions could become inhabitable, as farmland turns into desert. In
other regions, the opposite is happening with extreme rainfall causing historic
flooding as seen in China, Belgium, Germany and Netherland.
40 People in poorer countries will suffer the most as they do not have the money to
adapt to climate change. Many farms in developing counties already have to endure
climates that are too hot and this will only get worse.
Climate change has different effects in different areas of the world. Some places will
warm more than others, some will receive more rainfall and other will face droughts.
45 If temperature cannot be kept, the UK and Europe will be vulnerable to flooding
caused by extreme rainfall, many African nations are likely to suffer drought and food
shortage and drought conditions are likely in the western US while other areas will
see more intense storms.
Countries agree climate change can only be tackled by working together and while
50 major changes need to come from the governments and businesses, some small
changes like taking fewer flights, living car-free or using an electric car, switching
from gas heating system to an electric heating pump and isolating our homes can
limit our impact on the climate.

Lesson Plan
Regional Directorat: Centre-Est
Absentees:
Date:
Duration: 55 minutes
70 Aim: to help lower sixth students use their reading skills to understand the notion of
climate change and its effects.
Objectives: By the end of the reading comprehension lesson, lower sixth students
will be able to:
Predict four (04) expression or ideas that are likely to be found in the text;
75 Answer five (05) true or false statements relying on the text;
Answer four (04) content based questions basing on the text;
Write a paragraph of at least two ideas on how to limit the effects of climate
change.
Pre-requisites: lower sixth students have been taught how to write a paragraph.
80 Anticipated problems: some words may hinder the students understanding of the
text.
Warm-up ( 05 minutes)
85 Step 1: Greeting and date writing (2 minutes)
The teacher greets the students, chooses a student to tell and write the date on the
board.
Teacher: class, the temperature in your class seems to be really hot today,
90 isn’t it?
Students: yes it is/no it isn’t.
Teacher: Good! Now i want you to give words that have the same meaning
as temperature.
Students: weather, climate.
95 Teacher: fantastic!
The teacher writes the nature and the title of the lesson on the board.
Instruction: from the title of the text, guest four (04) expressions or ideas that are
likely to be in it.
Instruction: read the text silently and give the answer of this question.
Teacher: now that you have read the text, let us check you preditions.
Expected answer: as individuals we can stop using cars, stop using gas heating
115 systems and insulate our homes to limit our impact on the climate.
5
Activity1: Oral and individual activity ( 04 minutes)
Instruction: Answer the following statements by true or false according to the text.
Instruction: read silently the text and answer the questions bellow in full sentences.
Expected answers:
The teacher praises those who have found at least two answers correct and
encourage the others to do better the next time.
three to five groups will read their productions. The best one will be put on the board
for further improvement.
165 Instruction: in a well build paragraph, find two other causes of climate change.
The teacher instructs the students to copy down the correction of the production in
their lesson copybook and the follow-up activity in their exercise copybook. He
checks the attendance and fills in the record book.
The teacher thanks the students for their attendance, reminds them not to forget their
homework and says goodbye.
