Reading Comprehension

Text: what is climate change?

Climate is the average weather in a place over many years. Climate change refers to
long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns in specific areas. These shifts
can be natural, but the rapid climate change we are now seeing is mainly caused by
humans using oil, gas and coal for their homes, factories and transport. The world is
30 now warmer than it was in the 19th Century and the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere
has been risen by 50%. Temperature rises must slow down if we want to avoid the
worst consequences of climate change.

However, unless further action is taken, the planet could still warm more by the end
of this century. If nothing is done, scientists think that global warming could exceed
35 more in the future, leading to devastating heat waves, millions losing their home to
rising sea level and irreversible loss of plant and animal species. With further
warming, some regions could become inhabitable, as farmland turns into desert. In
other regions, the opposite is happening with extreme rainfall causing historic
flooding as seen in China, Belgium, Germany and Netherland.

40 People in poorer countries will suffer the most as they do not have the money to
adapt to climate change. Many farms in developing counties already have to endure
climates that are too hot and this will only get worse.

Climate change has different effects in different areas of the world. Some places will
warm more than others, some will receive more rainfall and other will face droughts.
45 If temperature cannot be kept, the UK and Europe will be vulnerable to flooding
caused by extreme rainfall, many African nations are likely to suffer drought and food
shortage and drought conditions are likely in the western US while other areas will
see more intense storms.

Countries agree climate change can only be tackled by working together and while
50 major changes need to come from the governments and businesses, some small
changes like taking fewer flights, living car-free or using an electric car, switching
from gas heating system to an electric heating pump and isolating our homes can
limit our impact on the climate.
