Operating System
OS Lecture
Operating System (OS) in order
to function.
1. Hardware - physical elements of a
computer.
2. Application Programs - designed to
help with specific tasks, simplify
workflows, and improve
communication across teams.
3. User - a person who uses computers
for work or entertainment or
communication or business.
Operating System handles many of the
basic system functions
64-bit CPU
- can run either 64-bit operating systems and 64- bit and/or 32-bit applications or a 32-bit
operating system and 32-bit applications.
32-bit CPU
- cannot run 64-bit OS or applications software at all.

Modern CPU’s
PROCESSOR?
- A processor, also known as a central processing unit
(CPU), is the part of a computer that performs
calculations and logical operations. It is the "brain"
of a computer, and is responsible for executing
instructions from software programs.
SOCKET
is a physical interface on a computer's
motherboard that allows a processor to be
connected to the motherboard.
CORES
processor core is a central processing unit (CPU) that performs the operations and calculations
required for a computer or device to function.
CLOCK CPU
- also known as the system clock or clock speed, is
the tempo at which a computer's central processing
unit (CPU) operates. It is measured in hertz (Hz) and
determines the number of clock cycles per second
that the CPU can execute.
CACHE - is a small amount of
memory built into a CPU that stores
frequently accessed data for faster
access by the processor.
CHIPMAKERS
1. Intel
2. IBM – International Business Machine
3. Freescale
4. AMD – Advanced Micro Devices
INTEL PROCESSORS
Intel is historically the leading provider of chips for
PCs. In 1971, Intel invented the first microprocessor
– the so called computer chip – with 4004 model.
This invention led to the first microcomputers that
bean appearing in 1975.

Ryzen 3 3200G Workstation 3.6 GHz to 4.0 GHz 4MB cache Radeon
Vega Graphics
• In addition to working with Apple Freescale on the PowerPC line, IBM makes high-
performance mainframe and workstation CPUs. In 2005, IBM partnered with Apple
and released the G5, advertised as the “fastest desktop processor ever”.

Mobile phone Chipset
• A CPU chip is designed for portable computers, it is
typically housed in a smaller chip package, but more
importantly, in order to run cooler, it uses lower
voltages than its desktop counterpart and has more
"sleep mode" capability.
