. B. Name the following.
1) The continent that remains frozen throughout the year.
Antarctica
2) The heat zone that receives the most intense sunlight.
Torrid
3)The heat zone located between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer.
Torrid Zone
4) Cool air rushing from the sea towards the land.
Sea Breeze
5) The amount of water vapour present in the atmosphere
Humidity
C. Write T for true or F for false.
1) The heat zones of the Earth are also known as climatic zones.
True
2)The climate of a place is affected by its location on the Earth.
True
3) The Frigid Zone gets intense sunlight throughout the year.
False
4) During summers, the days are short and the nights are long.
False
D. Answer these questions.
1) What effect does the distance from the sea have on climate?
A - The distance from the sea is another important factor that determines the climate of a place. During the day,
ocean water heats up much more slowly than the surrounding land. Therefore, places near the sea experience a
moderate climate, while places inland experience an extreme climate.
2) Describe the Torrid Zone.
A - The Torrid Zone is always experiencing high temperatures throughout the year with very little seasonal variation.
3) Explain how wind affects the climate of a place.
A -The direction of wind also affects the climate of a place. Different types of winds-hot, cold, humid and dry-have
different effects on the climate. Certain kinds of winds, like monsoon winds, carry moisture that helps decrease the
temperature of a place, leading to humidity and rain, while desert or dry winds make a place dustier and hotter.
4) Briefly describe the weather conditions experienced by the people of the Temperate Zone.
A - These areas have neither very hot nor very cold temperatures and are called the Temperate Zones. Regions in
this climatic zone experience different seasons, with distinct differences in the temperature. During summers, the
days are long and the nights are short, and it is just the opposite during winters.
5) How does the altitude of a place decide the climatic conditions of that location?
A - The altitude of a place also affects its climate. Locations at a higher altitude have colder temperatures. Hilly
areas have a cooler climate than the plains. As the height increases, the air becomes thinner, resulting in a moderate
climate.
6) Different places in the world experience different climatic conditions. Give reasons as to why you agree or disagree
with the given statement.
A - The climatic patterns of no two places on the Earth are the same. Scientists study several factors over a long
period of time, which can be more than thirty years, to understand the climatic trend of a place. I agree that the
climate of a place is influenced by different factors. Such as:
i. latitude or distance from the equator ii. elevation or altitude iii. distance from the sea iv. Winds v. Humidity
