TESTING AND COMMUNICATION PROCEDURE OF

PROTECTION RELAYS
1.CTMM/CTMFM TESTING PROCEDURE

Relay purpose:

The static motor protection relays type CTMM and CTMFM measure the load current
and the unbalance current independently, and provide accurate protection against
thermal damage under all operating conditions. The thermal characteristic of the
relay is designed to follow closely the thermal withstand characteristic of typical
motors; this ensures that the relay isolates the motors only when the insulation life is
threatened.

MODELS AVAILABLE:
APPROPRIATE KIT – MEGGER (Single phase relay testing kit), OMICRON (Three
phase relay testing kit), KINGSINE (Three phase relay testing kit), EPSEE (Three
phase relay testing kit).

REQUIRED TOOLS – CROCODILE PINS, CONNECTING CLIPS, BANANA

PINS(OR) BRASSES PIN AND CONNECTING CABLE.

AUX SUPPLY TERMINALS - +ve=5, -ve=6

AUX SUPPLY – 110V DC

TESTING PROCEDURE:

Provide the aux supply for the terminals at 5,6 and check the power indication if the
relay is ON. Aux supply will remain the same throughout the testing procedure, also
check if the multiplication factor K is set to 1 (k=1).

 EARTH FAULT [Io(t)]-

1. For testing earth fault check the relay is power ON once the
aux supply is given.
2. Check the relay tripping time by taking feedback from the
given feedback terminals.
Feedback terminals: (3,4)
3. Now for the given service settings calculate the relay trip time.
For example: service setting current knob= 10+40
Service setting time knob=0.04
Formula for earth fault current Io= K(10 + ∑)mA
Formula for earth fault time t= (0.06+(1 x ∑) sec
Note: formula used here is for example purpose formula may
change with types of relay.
4. Calculate the current to be injected and time to trip using the
formula (∑ value is taken from knob positions)
For example: current = 1(10+(10+40))
=60 mA
Trip time = (0.06+(1 x 0.04))
=0.100 sec
5. Now inject 60mA at the injection terminal the relay will trip at
0.100 sec.
Injection terminal: (11,12)
6. Change the service settings, calculate for some more values
and check the operation of relay.
 UNBALANCE I2(t)-

1. For testing unbalance check the relay is power ON once the

aux supply is given.

2. Check the relay tripping time by taking feedback from the

given feedback terminals.

Feedback terminals:(3,4)

3. Now for the given service settings calculate the relay trip time.

For example: service setting current knob= 0.4+0.8

Service setting time knob=0.1
Formula for earth fault current I2(t)= (0.3 + ∑)In A
Formula for earth fault time t= (0.10+ ∑) sec
Note: formula used here is for example purpose formula may
change with types of relay.

4. Calculate the current to be injected and time to trip using the

formula (∑ value is taken from knob positions)

For example: current = (0.3+(0.4+0.8))

=1.5 A
Trip time = (0.06+(1 x 0.04))
=0.100 sec

5. Now inject 60mA at injection terminal the relay will trip at

0.100 sec.

Injection terminals: (7,8) or (9,10)

6. Change the service settings, calculate for some more values

and check the operation of relay.
 THERMAL OVERLOAD (Ith)-
For testing thermal overload keep all the knobs related to stall and
unbalance to ON position (move all the knob to right side) this to avoid the
relay to trip in stall and unbalance before in trips in thermal.
1. For testing thermal check the relay is power ON once the aux
supply is given.
2. Check the relay tripping time by taking feedback from the
given feedback terminals.
Feedback terminals: (3,15)
3. Now change the top and bottom thermal rotating knob to 1
calculate the relay trip time based on the curve given below.
Thermal curve:

4. Inject 3.27 times of knob settings and check the tripping g time
for the respected curve.
For example: current to be injected = (1 x 3.27)In [if In=1]
=3.27 A
Current to be injected = (1 x 3.27)In [if In=5]
=16.35 A

Trip time = if curve is 4

=32 sec (from thermal curve)
5. Now inject 3.27A (if In=1) at injection terminal the relay will trip
at 32 sec.

Injection terminals: (7,8) or (9,10)

6. Now change the top and bottom thermal knob both to 0.65
and check the relay trip for same curve.

For example: current to be injected = (0.65 x 3.27)In [if In=1]

=2.12 A
Current to be injected = (0.65 x 3.27)In [if In=5]
=10.6 A

Trip time = if curve is 4

=32 sec (from thermal curve)

7. Now inject 2.12A (if In=1) at injection terminal the relay will trip
at 32 sec.

 INSTANTANEOUS PHASE OVERCURRENT (INST I1)-

For testing phase over current keep all the knobs related to stall and
unbalance to ON position (move all the knob to right side) this is to avoid the
relay to trip in stall and unbalance before it trips in over current.

1. For testing instantaneous over current check the relay is

power ON once the aux supply is given.

2. Check the relay tripping time by taking feedback from the

given feedback terminals.
Feedback terminals: (3,4)
3. Now for the given service settings calculate the relay trip time.
For example: service setting current knob= 6
Time setting= instantaneous (no time delay)
Formula for earth fault current Inst(I1)= In x 6
= 6 A (if In=1)

4. Now inject 6A at injection terminal the relay will trip

instantaneously.
Injection terminals: (7,8) or (9,10)
5. Change the service settings, calculate for some more values
and check the operation of relay.

 STALL PROTECTION [I1(t)]-

1. For testing stall protection check the relay is power ON once

the aux supply is given.
2. Check the relay tripping time by taking feedback from the
given feedback terminals.
Feedback terminals: (3,4) [in some relay it is (3,16)]

3. Now for the given service settings calculate the relay trip time.

For example: service setting current knob= 0.3+0.6+1.2

Service setting time knob=2+4
Formula for earth fault current I1(t)= (1.5 + ∑)In A
Formula for earth fault time t= (2 x ∑) sec
Note: formula used here is for example purpose formula may
change with types of relay.

4. Calculate the current to be injected and time to trip using the

formula (∑ value is taken from knob positions)

For example: current = (1.5+(0.3+0.6+1.2))

=3.6 A
Trip time = (2 x (2 + 4))
=12 sec

5. Now inject 3.6A at injection terminal the relay will trip at 12

sec.

Injection terminals: (7,8) or (9,10)

6. Change the service settings, calculate for some more

values and check the operation of relay.

Note: For further details verify relay manuals, testing kit manuals and related
relay kit operating procedure.

CT INPUT: R-6/Y-8/B-10 & N-5,7,9

VT SUPPLY: R-13/Y-16/B-18

FEEDBACK: 11, 12

AUX SUPPLY: 3, 4

TESTING PROCEDURE:

 RELAY WILL TRIP AT THIS CONDITION (low reverse power):

1. Connect the kit as per proper terminals, ensure proper earthing and Switch
on the kit. Give supply voltage to terminal 3 and 4.

2. Now fix the VT supply as R-63.5V @ 0’

Y-63.5V @ -120’
B-63.5V @ 120’.
3. Now fix the CT supply as R-500mA @ 0’
Y-500mA @ 120’
B-500mA @ -120’.

4. Start injecting the current and voltage the relay will trip since it seems to be a
reverse power (current angle is changed so it becomes reverse power).
 RELAY WILL NOT TRIP AT THIS CONDITION (low forward power):

16. Connect the kit as per proper terminals, ensure proper earthing and Switch on
the kit. Give supply voltage to terminal 3 and 4.
17. Now fix the VT supply as R-63.5V @ 0’
Y-63.5V @ -120’
B-63.5V @ 120’.
18. Now fix the CT supply as R-3mA @ 0’
Y-3mA @ -120’
B-3mA @ 120’.
19. Start injecting the current and voltage the relay will not trip since it seems to
be a low forward power.
i.e CT – 2500/1
Isec – 3mA
Iprim –7.5 A
Power – 1.732 x 6600 x 7.5 x 0.87 = 75KW approx (which is a low forward
power)

NOTE: we have to change current angles since we are testing reverse power, if we
change the angles(current) to normal angles then the relay should not trip.

TESTING PROCEDURE

 RELAY WILL TRIP AT THIS CONDITION (low forward power):

20. Connect the kit as per proper terminals, ensure proper earthing and Switch on
the kit. Give supply voltage to terminal 3 and 4.
21. Now fix the VT supply as R-63.5V @ 0’
Y-63.5V @ -120’
B-63.5V @ 120’.

22. Now fix the CT supply as R-3mA @ 0’

Y-3mA @ -120’
B-3mA @ 120’.
23. Start injecting the current and voltage the relay will trip since it seems to be a
low forward power.
i.e CT – 2500/1
Isec – 3mA
Iprim –7.5 A
Power – 1.732 x 6600 x 7.5 x 0.87 = 75KW approx (which is a low forward
power)

 RELAY WILL NOT TRIP AT THIS CONDITION (high forward power):

3. Now fix the CT supply as R-30mA @ 0’

Y-30mA @ -120’
B-30mA @ 120’.

4. Start injecting the current and voltage the relay will not trip since it seems to
be a high forward power.

i.e CT – 2500/1
Isec – 30 mA
Iprim – 75 A

Power – 1.732 x 6600 x 75 x 0.87 = 753KW approx (which is a high forward power)

 RELAY WILL NOT TRIP AT THIS CONDITION (low reverse power):

3. Now fix the CT supply as R-6mA @ 0’

Y-6mA @ 120’
B-6mA @ -120’.

4. Start injecting the current and voltage the relay will not trip since it seems to be a
low reverse power (current angle is changed so it becomes reverse power).

NOTE: we have not changed any current angles since we are testing forward
power. If we change the angles, then also it will not trip because it is low forward
power relay.

27.PRIMARY INJECTION TESTING DETAILS

Kit used – MEGGER (Single phase relay testing kit)

Materials needed – Crocodile clamp connected 16sqmm cable (red and black), milli
amps AC clamp meter

Purpose of primary injection – Primary injection test is mainly carried out to ensure
the healthiness of the CT by injecting the primary current using the kit and measuring
the secondary current using milli amp clamp meter.

SECONDARY CURRENT MEASURING METHODS

There are three methods you can measure the secondary current of the CT.
 METHOD 1 – Short the secondary terminals of the CT(s1&s2) using a loop
wire and measure the current using milli amps clamp meter on the looped
wire.
 METHOD 2 – In case the CT is connected to the relay, find the CT terminal
wires connected in the relay and measure the current using milli amps clamp
meter.
 METHOD 3 – If the CT is connected to a numerical relay then the secondary
current can also be checked in the metering menu of the relay.
NOTE: In case the CT is used for transducer instead of relay and the same
method1 & method2 can be used and also secondary current can be seen by
communicating the transducer with the laptop and select DISPLAY
MEASURED option in MXX software.

PRIMARY INJECTION PROCEDURE

 Connect the crocodile clamp of the 16sqmm cables one before the CT and
one after the CT.
 Now connect the other end of the cable one with the neutral current injection
terminal of single phase kit and other cable to (0-100)range kit’s current
injection terminal.
 Now power on the kit and change the inject range to (0-100) in the kit using
SEL button (red indication across the ranges will change).
 Select ON using the buttons in kit and vary the current using the variable
knob.
 Now the current start to inject on the CT primary (current injected can be
observed through display).
 Measure the CT ratio with primary current injected and secondary current
measured.
For example – If we inject 50 amps in primary and 0.25 amps
measured in the secondary then the CT ratio is 50/0.25 amp which is nothing
but 200/1 amps
Note: CT secondary will be 1 amp or 5 amp.

28.SECONDARY INJECTION TESTING DETAILS

Kit used – MEGGER (Single phase relay testing kit), OMICRON (Three phase relay
testing kit), KINGSINE (Three phase relay testing kit), EPSEE (Three phase relay
testing kit).
Materials needed –Secondary Injection cable for kit’s, multimeter, connecting clips
and pins.

Purpose of secondary injection – Secondary injection is usually done to check the

healthiness of the equipment by injecting secondary current through kit instead of
CT. Mainly secondary injection is done for testing of RELAY (both numerical and
electromechanical relay), TRANSDUCER, etc.

SECONDARY INJECTIONPROCEDURE

 Secondary injection for testing of relay and transducer can be done by

knowing the AUX supply, CT and VT terminals of the relay or transducer.
(Refer relay testing procedures).
 Inject the current and voltage, vary them according to the testing producers by
using the correct current and voltage injection terminals of the respective kits
used for testing (Refer kit manuals).

29 SYNCHROSCOPE TESTING

KIT Required – Single phase Kit

Supply required for synchro scope: 50V – 230V AC, 50 Hz.

PROCEDURE:

1. Check the coil resistances (two coils) – Coil resistance should be low. (1
Ohm)
2. Apply both sides 110V AC, 50 HZ, 0 PHASE SEQ.
3. If there is no difference between two coils in voltage, phase sequence,
frequency, the pointer will remain motion less at the 12 o’ clock position
on the dial.
4. If frequency same, but difference in phase angle, the pointer deflects in
one direction.
5. When the frequency of both coils same, the pointer becomes stationary.
When their frequency differs then the pointer deflects in one direction.
6. If frequency differs, but phase sequence is same, the pointer will rotate
continuously.
7. If voltage, frequency, phase sequence on both coils equal, Then the
pointer shows 12’0 clock positon, then synchro scope is in working
condition.

30.VOLTMETER TESTING DETAILS

Connect the kit as per proper terminals, Ensure proper earthing, Switch on the kit.
Give supply voltage to the respective coil terminal & measure the respective pickup
voltage of coil by raising the voltage & Tripping of the relay.

For example:

Steps:

MIT relay curve table with respective seconds.

CURV
S.NO 2*Is 5*Is 10*Is 20*Is
E
1 SI3 10.03 4.28 2.97 2.27
2 SI1 4.39 1.87 1.3 1
3 EI 26.67 3.33 0.81 0.2
4 VI 13.5 3.38 1.5 0.71
5 LTI 120 30 13.33 6.32
SI=simple inverse, VI=very inverse, EI=extreme inverse, LTI=long time inverse

Testing details:

NOTE down the service setting

For example:

CP(O/C)=VI, CE(E/F)=LTI, IP(O/C)=125%, IE(E/F)=40% tp(O/C)=0.500,

te(E/F)=0.500

1. O/C relay setting for very inverse (VI) is (PSM =10 & TMS=1.5 Ref curve table)
whatever PSM we choose and select the respective TMS based on the type of
curve.

Testing Procedure of over current protection:

 For testing of O/C protection note down the over current settings from the
relay.

For example: O/C Setting is 125% which means 1.25 amps of CT secondary i.e.
(100%=1 amps)

Time delay settings is te = 0.500 sec

 Once the settings are noted calculate the current to be injected and tripping
time of the relay.

Current injection calculation:

Current to be injected =PSM x 1.25 (125%)

Time taken for trip =TMS x 0.5 (te = 0.500)

THEORITICAL VALUE:

Current injection (10 x 1.25 = 12.5 A) Time taken (1.5 x 0.5 = 0.750 S)

 Now inject 12.5A in each phase the relay will operate at 0.750 s
R=12.5 A
Y=12.5 A
B=12.5 A
 Relay has operated at 0.736 s which is the practical value.

PRACTICAL VALUE:

Current injection (12.5 A) Time taken (0.736 S)

2. E/F relay setting for long term inverse (LTI) is (PSM =10 & TMS=13.33 we can
take value from curve table,) whatever PSM we choose select the respective TMS
also based on the type of curve.

Testing Procedure of earth fault protection:

 For testing of E/F protection note down the earth fault settings from the relay.

For example: E/F Setting is 40% which means 0.4 amps of CT secondary i.e.
(100%=1 amps)

Time delay settings is te = 0.500

 Once the settings are noted calculate the current to be injected and tripping
time of the relay.

Current injection calculation:

Current to be injected =PSM x 0.4 (40%)

Time taken for trip =TMS x 0.5 (te = 0.500)

THEORITICAL VALUE:

Current injection (10 x 0.4 = 4 A) Time taken (13.33 x 0.5 = 6.665 S)

 Now inject 4A in any one phase the relay will operate at 6.665 s
R=4 A
Y=0 A
B=0 A
 Relay has operated at 6.645 s which is the practical value.
PRACTICAL VALUE:

Current injection (4 A) Time taken (6.645 S)

ELECTRICAL CONNECTION DETAILS:

VARIOUS TYPES OF CONNECTION:

STEPS FOR TESTING A TRANSDUCER:
 Once the transducer is programmed and checked for proper CT, VT and AUX
terminals are connected to the kit.
 Now inject the current and voltage based on the parameters to be checked.
For example: if voltage is programmed as OUTPUT A with the range of
0V – 110V for 4Ma – 20mA.
Inject 55V from the kit and measure the current using milli amp clamp meter
by looping the terminal (14,15) which is OUTPUT A terminals.
 Similarly check other parameters by looping teir respective terminals and
injecting the respective voltages and currents.
 This milli amp output measurement can also be done by software.
 Communicate the transducer with the software as instructed above and read
the program from the transducer.
 Once the program is read, click on DISPLAY->MEASURAND -> PRIMARY
VALUES or SECONDARY VALUES.
 Now when the voltage and the current are injected the respective change in
milli amps and primary/secondary values is displayed.

NOTE: This live display of values through software can be used when
the transducer is connected in online also.
