Introduction
This experiment investigates the reaction of different metals. It is conducted in the
chemistry lab. The experiment is based on the reactivity of metals according to the
reactivity series. Metals always produce heat as it will be an exothermic reaction.
Different metals react with hydrochloric acid to produce hydrogen gas and metal
chloride. The reactivity of the metal affects the rate of hydrogen gas production. The
more reactive the metal, the faster the reaction.
Research question :
What is the effect when a metal reacts with hydrochloric acid? { magnesium, zinc,
aluminum, copper }
Aim:
The investigation aims to measure how long different metals take to react with
hydrochloric acid.
Hypothesis :
As the reactivity increases the time will decrease. Magnesium will react quickly however
zinc may take longer to react as it is lower on the reactivity series. When metals react
with HCl there will be heat produced.
Variables :
dependent variable is the time taken for each reaction to take place and how it reacts
controlled variable is the amount of HCl and the temperature that is being kept the same
Apparatus :
● Beaker
● Surgical gloves
● Hcl { DILUTED }
● Aluminum
● Magnesium
● Copper
● Zinc dust
● Dropper
● Timer
● Test tubes
Procedure :
HAZARDS :
HCl MAY BURN SKIN AS A PROTECTION WEAR HAND GLOVES.

CONCLUSION:
As the reactivity increases the time decreases. Magnesium will react quickly however
zinc takes longer to react as it is lower on the reactivity series. When metals react with
HCl heat is produced.

LIMITATIONS - SUGGESTIONS
Extension
● Take another kind of controlled Variable ( acid )
● Investigate different varieties of metals
● Try with varying amounts of acid
