All the times Jesus is identified as God in the bible

Have the article broken up into sections

The witness of the gospel writers

The witness of the church

The witness of Christ himself.

If you ask enough people on university campuses, in Islamic communities, or around the internet about
Jesus’ self-declared identity, you will find many believe he never viewed himself as God. Some will even
go so far as to say his equality with God was gradually developed by the early church. These ideas have
been floating around academic circles sene the rise () of textual criticism in the late (). However, the
ideas proposed by the German New Testament scholars did receive wide experience until the infamous
Bart Ermin wrote () in (). To this day, if you visit a mosque or internet forums, you will still hear many
arguments he presents in the book.

Thought It would be fun to go through all the arguments and counterarguments in detail; I believe that
it’s essential to let the Bible speak for itself. If you genuinely want to know if Jesus and his followers
thought he was God, the best thing you can do is examine their thoughts yourself. Consequently, I have
organized all of the New Testament deity claims into statements made by Jesus, Statements made by the
Apostles, and Statements made by the early church. I will also explain why these verses are considered
to be evidence Jesus claimed to be God.

Claims made by the Apostles.

Of all the deity claims made in the New Testament, few have emotional weight carried by the
declarations of the Apostles. The Apostolic understanding of Christ can be seen in direct quotes and
inferences/ statements woven into the Gospel narratives.

John

Of all the Gospels, John’s declarations of Jesus’ deity are by far the easiest for non-Jewish audiences to
understand. This is mainly because the nature of Christ’s deity is a big focus of his Gospel. At the time of
its writing, Gnostic views of Jesus were infiltrating the church.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in
the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4
In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the
darkness has not overcome it….. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen
his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:1-5
& 14

John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make
straight the way for the Lord.’” John 1:23 (John the Baptist) (Isaiah 40:3) (A voice of one calling:

“In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord make straight in the desert a highway for our God.)
A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were
locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put
your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” John 20:26-28

So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. In
his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.”
For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even
calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. John 5:16-18

Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.” “You are not yet
fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered,
“before Abraham was born, I am!” At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself,
slipping away from the temple grounds. John 8:56-59

Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about
me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,
and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of
my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my
Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, but
Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you
stone me?” “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you,
a mere man, claim to be God.” John 10:25-33

Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” John 20:28

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever
believes in me will never be thirsty. john 6:35

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will
never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. John 10:7

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. John 10:11

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though
they die; John 11:25

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through
me. John 14:6

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. John 15:1
