Elements of Art

-Basic components of
art-making.

-used in analyzing the art

1) Line
-mark made upon a surface
-the mark’s length must be longer than its
width
-examples of line are: horizontal, vertical,
wavy, diagonal, and more
-can be two or three dimensional,
descriptive, implied, or abstract

2) Shapes
-areas of enclosed space
that are two-dimensional
-flat
-can only have height and
width

Logo here 17
Categories of Shapes
a)Geometric
Shapes-
mathematical,
like circles and
squares
18
Categories of Shapes

B)Organic shapes-
originated from nature
like clouds and leaves

19
3) Space
-Deals with the illusion of depth
on a flat surface
-overlapping shapes to make
some look closer, or make
objects in the distance smaller to
look like they are farther away
-can be used in three-
dimensional art.

4) Value

Lightness and
darkness of areas in
an art work.
-white is the lightest
value
-black is the darkest
5. Color
• Made up of three properties:
1) Hue-name of color
2) Value-hue’s lightness and darkness (a
color’s value changes when white or black
is added)
3) Intensity-quality of brightness and
purity (high intensity= color is strong and
bright; low intensity=color is faint and dull)

5. Color
Infinite other hues are born
through mixing of colors
from which more and more
other kinds of colors may
be thus created

6) Texture
“ -the way things feel, or look as if
they might feel if touched
-engages the sense of touch as
well as vision
-objects can be rough or smooth,
wet or dry, sticky or slick, hard or

soft, brittle and flexible 24
7) Form
-three-dimensional and
“ encloses volume
-includes height, width,
and depth (e.g cube,
sphere, pyramid, or
cylinder)
-can also be free-flowing

Principles of Design
-design has to have a purpose; design is
interpreted by making sure an image has
a center of attention, a point of focus
-rules a designer must follow to create an

“ effective composition that clearly

delivers a message to its audience
Logo here 27
1) Balance
-distribution of the visual
weight of objects, colors,
texture, and space
Symmetrical
Balance
-elements used on one of
the design are similar to
those on the other side
Asymmetrical
Balance

-sides are different

but still looks
balanced
Radial Balance
-elements are
arranged around a
central point and
may be similar
2) Emphasis
-part of the design that
catches the viewer’s
attention; one area stand out
by contrasting it with other
areas; area could vary in size,
color, texture, shape, etc.
3) Pattern

-repeating of an object or
symbol all over the work of
art
4) Repetition
-works with pattern to make
the work of art seem active;
creates unity within work of
art
5) Proportion
-feeling of unity created
when all parts (sizes,
amounts, or number) relate
well with each other.
6) Rhythm
-one or more elements of design are
used repeatedly to create a feeling of
organized movement; creates mood
like music or dancing; variety is
essential to make it exciting
7) Variety
-use of several elements of
design to hold the viewer’s
attention and to guide the
viewer’s eye through and around
the work of art
8) Unity
-feeling of harmony between
all parts of the work of art,
which creates a sense of
completeness
