1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
As time passed by, products began to inflate, especially school supplies, which customers
had a hard time coping with, since salaries, income, and wages still remained constant, finding
product inflation a burden for daily living and hindrance for some people, leading to them not
attending school. So, we have decided to adopt the program of recycling materials and trade to
come up with a program called "Trade & Thrive: Trading Waste an Eco-Friendly Exchange for
Education", in which, instead of buying school supplies, how about we trade the things that
people can't already use, such as plastic bottles, metals, boxes, etc. in exchange for some school
supplies. Through it, we can help customers, students, and those who don't have financial
privilege to buy school supplies. In addition, we are planning to make decorations out of
recycled materials that we will gather and sell it to the market. The rest that can't be used for
making decorations will be sold to junkshops. Overall, this program is a concept of hitting two
birds with one stone, because we are not just helping students but also the environment to reduce
human waste while also earning profit.
2.0 INTRODUCTION
I’m sure nowadays, recycling materials and selling on the market is already familiar, the
same as trading objects, but have you ever heard about the program "Trade & Thrive: Trading
Waste an Eco-Friendly Exchange for Education"? Based on research, recycling has emerged as a
crucial practice for environmental sustainability, and its impact can go beyond ecological
benefits when aligned with social causes, where there are some campaigns which are focused on
helping students providing them with the necessities needed for school, such as school supplies.
One of them is called “OTW: A Journey for Hope”. Since, according to some websites, while
public schools have no tuition fees, some parents need help to keep up with miscellaneous costs
like school kits. In addition, poverty and education are inextricably linked, a reason behind why
some people don’t go to school.
We aim to provide insights into how individuals and communities can participate in
meaningful recycling efforts that contribute to a greater societal purpose, so we decided to
conceptualize the program “Trade & Thrive: Trading Waste an Eco-Friendly Exchange for
Education” as our new development program. This is not the same for other programs, because
instead of helping like doing charity, why not help them in the sense of teaching them to be more
resourceful. Therefore, we decided that we will be selling school supplies in exchange for things
like bottles, boxes, etc. that people cannot use or any recycled materials. Because, instead of
throwing these things in the garbage, why not trade them to us in order to reduce the cost of
buying school supplies and, at the same time, reduce the waste people produce, because we will
be recycling the things that we will collect and sell it to the market. In addition, in order to make
sure that nothing will go into waste, the things that we will not use will be sold to junkshops for
extra income. Basically, everyone is okay with joining our program, but our targets are the
students and parents/people who don't have the financial ability to buy school supplies. In
addition, the transaction will only happen at weekends.
2.1 PROBLEM STATEMENT
Ever since poverty has been the number one hindrance for some people to attain
education, although there are public schools offering non-tuition fees, parents still can't support
the needs for miscellaneous costs such as school supplies, where there is an additional burden for
them, which is inflation that has been greatly affecting the country’s entire economy and
especially it’s people. This scenario makes it harder for them to afford to buy school necessities,
and that leads to some children not attending school. On the other hand, waste, particularly
human waste, contributes significantly to environmental pollution, harming ecosystems and
posing risks to human health, which until now has been one of the challenges the country has
been facing. So, we’ve come up with the idea of making a program that will make the problem
with waste turn into a solution for people to afford school supplies. The program that we are
trying to establish is called “Trade & Thrive: Trading Waste an Eco-Friendly Exchange for
Education.”
Objective: To establish a recycling initiative program where each plastic, box, etc. generates a
monetary profit while also helping people who don’t have money to buy school supplies by
doing the practice of trading, and also raising awareness of both environmental sustainability and
social responsibility.
2.2 METHODOLOGY: DATA COLLECTION
To complete this, I am collecting all the information by several methods which are:
1) Observation
Observations were made based on our previous experience in facing the problems of
household waste and also hearing some news of how necessities needed for school have
become a hindrance for some people to have access to education. Buying school supplies
is an additional burden for people for their cost of living and with the inflation rate that
has been happening, where products have increased prices, there is a tendency that the
rate of people who don’t go to school due to lack of financial capability will increase. So,
we decided to make a program that maybe can help to solve the problem.
2) Survey or questionnaire
We will conduct an online survey related to the study, using Google form by passing the
link to the target respondents so that they will answer directly in the Google form
provided. The purpose of conducting this survey is to identify what their thought about
our project (name of the program).
Sample Questions:
1. How did you hear about using household waste (plastic bottles, boxes, metals, bottled
glass, etc.) as payment for school supplies?
2. What motivates you to participate in this program (e.g., environmental impact,
helping children, etc.)?
3. Are there any barriers or challenges preventing you from participating?
4. How likely are you to continue participating in the future?
3) Research
Research and study has been done by reviewing previous studies, reports, and case
studies on successful recycling programs and making it a business to earn profit. Their
purpose for doing this is to reduce waste while contributing to making functional stuff
that can be used by people. At the same time, it is to earn money from things that people
think are already useless.
2.3 LIMITATIONS
The limitations are:
a) It may be challenging to measure the direct impact of this program to the target customer.
b) People’s engagement in recycling can vary based on convenience, awareness, and
motivation, making it difficult to predict consistent levels of participation.
c) The challenges to make sure that this program will patronize by people.
3.0 NEW PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
3.1 DEFINITIONS
Program development is a systematic process of designing, implementing, and evaluating
initiatives to address specific needs or achieve desired outcomes(Mughenyi, 2024). In addition,
program development encourages innovation and creativity in designing interventions, strategies,
and approaches to address complex problems or emerging issues. By experimenting with new
ideas and adapting best practices, programs can stay relevant and responsive to changing needs
and contexts. The conceptualized program is called Trade & Thrive: Trading Waste an Eco-
Friendly Exchange for Education. It can be described as the adoption of two concepts: recycling
materials and trading. This program will help to minimize waste through the use of creative ideas
and transform them into beautiful useful artwork. It also allows individuals to practice their
resourcefulness, and lastly to help the environment and society’s problems.
3.2 CLASSIFICATION OF NPD
This innovative program can be classified as a "School Supplies Exchange Program"
because this program is made for those families that are lacking money to buy their children
school supplies or any person who wants to have school supplies without the need to pay money,
but in exchange for either used boxes, bottles, plastics, or anything that can be recycled. This
innovative program will adopt the concept of recycling materials with the use of those collected
items into profitable items that can be sold, and the profit that can be earned will be used to buy
school supplies in order to sustain the program. This program is classified as a hybrid initiative—
combining elements of social welfare, which are helping families in need, environmental
responsibility for recycling and reducing waste, and economic sustainability where we reinvest
in resources for future exchanges.
3.3 NEW PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
3.3.1 Research & Development
A) IDEA GENERATION
We came up with the idea that constitutes our StreetAralan and Kalyenisan program, in
which we thought of helping kids in our community located at Purok 8, San Fermin, by giving
them school supplies and hygiene kits in exchange for garbage, because kids don't attend school
due to their family's financial situation and don't have proper hygiene. We leveled up into an
innovative program that will not only help families in need to lessen their burden, but also to use
our three principles of waste management that will help to reduce the amount of waste we've
made and the impact on the environment, which is to use, the Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse, and
lastly to earn money from upcycling products such as pop holder, decorations just like lanterns or
lamps made of bottles, and other things that are profitable, and the money earned will also be
used to buy school supplies.

Figure 1: Concept of the Program (flowchart)
For the New Program Development, the purpose of recycled material to our customers is
to gain school supplies. These innovative program will influence people to be more resourceful
in life, and change how people think about waste. Where all things have a purpose, it just
depends on how people will look for them. We will be including/inserting motivational quotes
into the school supplies, in order to inspire and motivate individuals to just continue attaining the
degree they want with the use of the school supplies they will get.
On the other hand, the purpose of recycled material to us developers is that the things that
we will collect from trading will be used to make recycled materials that will turn into new
products that will be sold in the market. When creating new products from recyclable materials,
we will incorporate colorful and attractive designs to capture the attention of our potential
consumers and encourage them to buy our products. This program will foster innovation and
challenge our creative thinking, leading to the success of our program. The plastic bottles and
other recyclable materials we collect will be transformed into beautiful new things that can be
used by anyone. These materials can be used to create home decor items like vases, flower
arrangements, Christmas decorations, and more.
To make our products even more appealing and eye-catching, we will use various design
materials like paint and other coloring agents to meet the expectations of our future customers
and ensure the quality of our service. If our program succeeds, we will be able to help children
and alleviate the financial burden of buying school supplies for some parents. To ensure that the
children's education is not affected, we will establish a schedule for our program. During
weekdays, the children will attend their respective schools, and on weekends, we are open for
transactions.
Lastly, those that cannot be recycled will be sold to junk shops in order to make sure that
nothing will go to waste. The income that we will earn from selling recycled materials and to
junk shops will be used to buy school supplies in order to maintain and sustain the operation of
the program.
3.5 CONCEPT TESTING
For our new program “Trade & Thrive: Trading Waste an Eco-Friendly for Education”,
Concept testing is important to test if our program or service is helpful and if can have a
beautiful impact to the life of children. And in terms of our recyclable product, concept testing
has been carried out in order to investigate the potential consumers' reactions and feedbacks to
our proposed product or service before introducing our product to the market. concept testing is a
valuable step to identify if what else to improve to make our product beautiful and maintain the
goodness of our service.
There are 5 reasons of the concept testing:
1. To determine what will be the benefits of our programs or service.
2. To develop our creative thinking and idea.
3. To identify the highest potential customer segments. In able to determine who likes the
concept of the program the most and their reason.
4. To identify what are the possible things to do to improve our program or service.
5. To estimate the concept’s market potential.
3.5.1 FEATURES ON PROGRAM CONCEPT
The feature of this program is that each recycled material will be used by the customer to
exchange it for a particular school supply. Since we based the trading of the school supplies on
the price of the recycled materials to the junkshops, we decided that there will be designated
recycled materials that are only allowed in order for you to trade the school supplies, which can
be seen in figure 2. Aside from that, the recycled material will also be transformed into a
designated DIY product, such as clothes will be used to make pot holders; plastic bottles into pen
holders, wall/house decoration, or flowers; boxes into wall decoration or storage box; glass
bottles into vases or wall/house decoration.
The table below show the equivalent of each school supplies to the recycled materials:

3.6 Test Marketing
Test marketing for innovative programs provides valuable insights into consumer
demand, product appeal, and effective marketing strategies. By following a structured test
marketing process, you can make informed decisions on how to scale the product, attract a wider
audience, and maximize the product’s impact in the eco-friendly decor market
It is an essential step in determining how the target market perceives the concept of the
program before it is being launched in the market. This phase helps gather feedback on product
appeal, pricing, distribution, and overall demand. Here is a structured approach to conducting
effective test marketing for this eco-friendly product;
The main goals of the test marketing phase in terms of the concept of the program:
1. To know the community engagement in this kind of program.
2. To gather feedback for improvement or changes
The main goals of the test marketing phase in terms of the recycled materials:
1. To measure market demand for upcycled plastic bottle decor.
2. To gather feedback on product design, quality, and pricing.
3. To assess the effectiveness of marketing strategies in reaching the eco-conscious and
home decor market segments.
4. To identify areas for improvement based on consumer feedback.
Identify Target Market
Since this product appeals to eco-conscious consumers, the primary target market may
includes students, people who lack financial capability, environmentally conscious individuals,
DIY and upcycling enthusiasts, home décor consumers interested in unique or handmade items,
and potential partners like eco-friendly stores, craft stores, and online marketplace.
Determine Test Marketing Area
It is very important to know where to launch our program, especially the concept of doing
transaction of trading things. We can put it into the area where lots of children don’t go to school
due to financial problem, or to places where establishment are far from their places making it
hard for them to get supplies they needed, or we can also enter to the online platform like doing
business Facebook page in order to reach a large scope of target market.
In addition, we also have to choose specific locations to introduce the recycled products
we made. It can be in the local craft fairs or eco-markets, which can provide a direct way to
gauge customer reactions and receive immediate feedback, or small home decor stores because
they support local and sustainable products, or it can be on online platforms, in order to utilize
eco-focused online marketplaces (like Etsy, Shoppee) or social media channels to reach a
broader audience, especially that nowadays people are fund of using social media.
Pricing Strategy
Since we use recycled materials instead of money as a payment for the school supplies,
we based the equivalent of the school supplies on the price of each recycled material when
selling it in the junk shops, but we don’t follow the exact price. Instead, we’ve made some
addition in order for the customer to still trade some school supplies even with just a small
amount of recycled materials they have. On the other hand, to determine the introductory price
for the recycled product that we will be selling reflects both the handmade quality and the eco-
friendly nature of the item. We may offer a small discount for early adopters or bundle offers for
buyers who purchase multiple items, encouraging bulk sales.
Promotional Activities
Promoting the program is one of the crucial parts to be done, since the engagement of the
target customer will depend on this. So, as a beginner to this kind of environment, we will start
with creating a small marketing campaign to generate interest and drive foot traffic or online
engagement. Some of the strategies we will include are social media promotion, by using
platforms like Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and Pinterest to showcase the decor’s aesthetic
appeal and creating a page to promote the program and create educational content like sharing
the story behind the program, explaining the different purpose of recycled materials.
Collect Feedback
1. Surveys and Interviews: distribute short surveys to buyers and potential customers. Ask
questions about:
Their overall perception of the product and program.
The product's aesthetic appeal and quality.
Pricing and value for money.
Potential improvements or additional features they’d like to see or change.
2. Online Reviews: Encourage early buyers to leave reviews on online platforms or social media,
because positive reviews build credibility and help attract more customers.
3. Observation: For in-person test markets, observe customer reactions, such as time spent
looking at the product and engaging to the program, expressions, or comments made.
Analyze Results
Examine the data collected during the test marketing phase to understand the program
and product’s performance. In order to make adjustments based on the insights gathered and
make any necessary improvements to the product or marketing approach. Analyzing the results
can help us to modify product design, adjust pricing based on perceived value, expand or limit
the range of distribution channels, and lastly to know if we will go through with the plan for
Full-Scale Launch.
4.0 CONCLUSION
As a conclusion, referring to the problem statement, it is known that a major problem is
that many children don’t go to school, especially for our target customer, which is people who
lack financial abilities to buy school supplies, since it is already a big burden to them on knowing
the fact that they have bigger more problems which their attention is focused to and that is to
survive their food for daily living. Hence, the program “Trade & Thrive: Trading Waste an Eco-
Friendly for Education” can help to lessen the burden of buying school supplies and this can be a
great start for them to be able to attain education with the help of themselves in being
resourceful. I hope this program will encourage our target user to be resourceful and always look
for ways of being able to attain education and be motivated to go to school.
