A. About Us
Universitas Riau (UNRI) is a distinguished institution with a visionary goal of
becoming a leading research university in the field of science and technology within the
Southeast Asian region. Established in 1962, UNRI has consistently focused on the pursuit of
scientific research as a core mission. The university's founding missions encompass the
delivery of excellent higher education, the establishment of a dignified university governance
system, the cultivation of students' exceptional potential, and the creation of a reliable
information system while applying innovation for the betterment of society. UNRI's

B. The Competition
The UNRI International Academic Writing Competition (UNRI-IAWC), hosted by the
University of Riau, is a dynamic platform designed to inspire and celebrate groundbreaking
ideas through the art of scientific writing. Open to diverse academic disciplines, IAWC 2024
aims to empower students to transform their research and innovative thinking into compelling
scientific essays. This competition not only encourages students to showcase their expertise
but also enhances their ability to articulate complex ideas and solutions, fostering a global
community of forward-thinking changemakers.
This year’s theme, “Innovation for a Sustainable Future: Interdisciplinary
Solutions for Global Challenges” encourages participants to tackle pressing global issues
through fresh perspectives and groundbreaking ideas. Dive into thought-provoking sub-
themes, including:
- Agrocomplex
- Climate Change and Environment
- Economics, Business, and Finance
- Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence
- Law, Politics, and Governance
- Maritime and Ocean Issues
- Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences
- Quality Education
C. Competition Format
Participants in the competition are invited to submit a short scientific essay on one of
the exciting sub-theme topics. Each submission will be carefully reviewed and evaluated by a
distinguished team of academics from various countries. Winners will be selected based on
the highest cumulative score, recognizing the most insightful and innovative contributions.
D. Submission Guidelines
All submissions must adhere to the following requirements, as outlined in the
submission guideline below.
- Topics: Agrocomplex, Climate Change and Environment, Economics, Business, and
Finance, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence, Law, Politics, and
Governance, Maritime and Ocean Issues, Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences, and
Quality Education.
- Writing Format: A4 paper size, spacing 1,5, margins 4-3-3-3, Times New Roman Font,
12 pt.
- Title: The title should not exceed 20 words and be in bold.
- Length: Essays should not exceed 1,500 – 2,000 words (excluding diagrams, tables of
data, or authorship declaration).
- Essay Outline: Suggested outline for the essays consists of introduction, body
pharahraps, and conclusion. However, other formats are also welcome.
- Writing Style: Submissions should present an analytically backed perspective on an
under-appreciated global topic. Evidence and nuance are critical. Submissions should be
well-researched, well-informed, and formal in style and prose. The UNRI-IAWC does not
accept op-eds, otherwise known as editorials or opinion pieces for its competition. Articles
are expected to have a thesis but should not have an agenda. Submissions should also not
be merely a collection of facts. We also ask that submissions are culturally sensitive, fact-
checked, and respectful.
- Citation and Sources: All factual claims must be backed by a citation from a reliable
source. All ideas that are not your own must be properly attributed. Citations should be
made via a reference manager (Mendeley, EndNote, etc). Additionally, the Harvard
referencing system must be used for all citations.
E. Competition Schedule
Please note that contestants are requested to register and pay before becoming
eligible to submit their articles prior to the submission deadline.
- Registration and Submission Deadline : November 17 – November 25, 2024
- Evaluation by Judges: November 26, 2024
- Winner Announcement & International Seminar: November 27, 2024

H. Competition Eligibility:
Participants can be undergraduate students from all public and private universities in
Indonesia and internationally, either as individuals or in groups of up to 2 students. All
participants must be active students from the same university, and each participant can only be
the leader or a member of one group. Submissions are expected to be written in English. For
