CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Financial problem faced by student are known as they do not have enough money

for their daily expenses, where money worries is causing them to stress. Furthermore,

students has been facing financial problem lately and this problem had become a major

problem for student. And this is a major obstacle for students who want to complete their

studies. Most students today are theirs the reason why they are not able to study properly

is also because of the difficulty of financial.

According to Widener (2017) mentioned that there are two ways on how a financial

problem could affect the students academic performance which are health problems and

having to work part time. Widener (2017) further added that financial problems lead to

health problems such as anxiety which then lead to negative behavior such as addiction to

alcohol or uncontrolled shopping hence making the students lose their focus on their

academics. When the students is facing financial problem and to overcome difficulties

because of the high cost of living they are more exposed and vulnerable to health

problems. Moreover due to inflation and trade war it had most of the country facing

recession and increases the cases of students facing financial problem. In the society

today, it is normal for a high school students to live without saving any money. But, they

did not aware that accidents could happen at any time. When accident happens, they
2

could not pay for the emergency expenses since they do not have any money inside their

saving account, and they have to pay with their credit cards and adding debt to their

account. (Maureen, (2019) mentioned that the first reason people get into debt is because

they do not have a savings account.

In an effort to address the lack of financial literacy on a broader scale and increase

educational efforts on matters of personal finance, colleges and universities have

sponsored a host of various financial program and initiatives ( Webber & Rogers, 2014)

ranging from optional personal finance course or electives to required first year seminar

curriculums ( Danns, 2014). These are all in addition to federally mandated requirements

surrounding specially funded programs and educational literature one must read before

acquiring a students loan. While each of the efforts are designed to engage and educate

students in matters of personal finance.

.
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to investigate the effects of financial problems on the academic

achievement of Grade 12 students in Masbate National Comprehensive high school.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the extent of financial problems experienced by Grade 12 students in

Masbate National Comprehensive High School?

2. What is the relationship between the level of financial problems and the academic

achievement of the Grade 12 Students in Masbate National Comprehensive high

school?
3

3. What are the specific academic areas affected by financial problems among grade

12 students in Masbate National Comprehensive High school?

4. What coping mechanisms do Grade 12 students in Masbate National

Comprehensive high school employ to address their financial problems?

5. What recommendations can be made to mitigate the negative effects of financial

problems on the academic achievement of grade 12 students in Masbate National

Comprehensive high school?

6.

This research intends to provide valuable insights into the challenges faced by financially

struggling students and contribute to the development of effective interventions to

support their academic success.

Scope and Delimitation

This subject of the study is focused on the students who are experiencing the

effect of financial problems on academic achievement, school year 2024-2025. This

research will investigate a range of financial challenges faced by Grade 12 students of

Masbate national comprehensive high school, including: Educational resources, living

expenses, financial behavior. Also this study will analyze a range of factors of academic

achievement including: Good grades, attendance, motivation. The study was conducted

among grade 12 students facing challenges and their impact on academic performance.

The researcher will give questioners to the selected Grade 12 students from the

different strand to avoid bias. This study is limited to study the different strands

financially. This will be focuses on how financial problems affects to the academic
4

achievement of students. The study will not focuses on the different factors that not

related to the study.

Significance of the Study

This study aimed to provide valuable information on how financial problem affect on

the academic achievements of students. This study can help the students to gain

knowledge and provide a board understanding about financial problem. This also

examined the learning methods used by students and how these affected their academic

scores. This study about financial stress can directly impact student’s ability to focus,

access resources, and maintain motivation. Understanding these barriers help educators

and policymakers create better support systems for students. The study provide data for

policymakers to develop financial aid programs, subsidized education, or free meal plans.

Such policies reduce the financial burden on families, allowing students to focus on

learning rather than economic survival. Findings from these studies can motivate local

communities and organization to develop support systems like tutoring, counseling, and

financial literary programs, all of which contribute to better academic outcomes, these

studies can help reduce dropout rates. This benefits society by creating a more educated

workforce, leading to better employment rates and overall economic stability. Studying

the gaps of the study can help the students to have a broad understanding on how

financial problem affect on the academic achievement.

Fig.1 (Conceptual Paradigm)

This framework would indicate that financial stress has negative consequences on

the academic outcomes of Grade 12 students. This affect, however is not direct but is

mediated by study habits. The study habits of individuals experiencing financial struggles

would barely have time and other resources to study, hence lowering it and affecting their

overall academic outcomes. The moderation effect brought about by social support would

act as a buffer and curtail inevitable effects of financial stress. Prior academic

achievement constitutes a confounding variable, likely to influence both financial

problem and academic performance, thus the direct effect of financial problems becomes

masked. School type also forms a control variable, which has to be used to ensure that the

differences in the resources and support systems of the schools are not likely to influence

the results.

Social Capital Theory contends that social relationships are resources that can

lead to the development and accumulation of human capital. Social Justice Framework

Theory is a way of seeing and acting aimed at resisting unfairness and inequity while

enhancing freedom and possibility for all.

Walberg's Theory of Educational Productivity proposes that there are nine factors

that influence academic achievement: grades, motivation, age, prior achievement, home

environment, support from peers, classroom environment, quality of instruction, and

quantity of instruction.
7

Achievement Goal Theory holds that, when performing achievement-related

tasks, individuals can fluctuate in their state of involvement directed toward task or ego

goals. That is, they can be more or less task- and ego-involved at any point during task

engagement.

Despite some studies failing to find a direct correlation between financial need

and poor academic performance, there is evidence that students facing financial stress

tend to earn lower grades, accumulate fewer credit hours, and may even consider

reducing their course loads or dropping out due to financial concerns.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Review of Related Literature

A study in the Philippines more et al… (2021), stated that financial stress impedes

their ability to succeed academically ad students experiencing financial stress finds it

challenging to navigate relationship with wealthier peer, often leading feeling of

isolation and embarrassment

Self-administered surveys were used to gather data from a total of 120

respondents among public university students. Data collected were analyzed using the

SPSS to obtain the descriptive statistics. From the results, there is a significant

relationship between financial problems and academic performance indicating that the

students with financial problems affect their academic performance (Norazlan, Yusut &

Majdhoub,2020).

The research conducted by Norazlan, Yusut, and Majdhoub (2020) utilized self-

administered surveys to collect data from 120 respondents who were public university

students. The collected data underwent analysis using the Statistical Package for the

Social Sciences (SPSS) to compute descriptive statistics.

Experiencing financial stress is not unlikely among Filipino students, and

government statistics suggest that asignificant proportion of the school-age population

experience financial difficulties. Starting at the basic education level, almost 20% of

Filipino children who dropped out of school mentioned insufficient financial resources as

the main reason for quitting school (Philippine Statistics Authority, 2015). Dropping out

of school was most probable among 17-year olds, particularly among those from the
10

lowest income families (Reyes,Tabuga, Asis, & Mondez, 2015). In the college-age

population, the top reason (mentioned by 37.58%) for not going to college or university

was the high cost of higher education; moreover, about 16.0% of those who opted not to

pursue higher education report that they did so in order to look for work to earn money

for their families (Reyes et al., 2015). In the current study, we hypothesized that financial

stress would be negatively related to subjective well-being, or specifically, life

satisfaction of Filipino students. There are currently no published studies that show this

relationship with a Filipino sample. One recent study did not actually measure financial

stress, but showed that sense of poverty was associated with the experience of

psychological distress among students (Reyes & Yujuico, 2014).

According to Perman (2019), CNBC journalist, stated that having a part-time job

during the study takes a greater impact on low-income students, whereby approximate ly

6 million students took a part-time job, and most of them are women, Blacks and Latinos.

By juggling between jobs and academics, some students have to struggle to overcome

and manage their financial problems. This affects their academic performance as they

have to divide their focus and attention between work and their academics. Perman

(2019) also mentioned that approximately 59% of students from underprivileged or low-

income families worked for 15 hours and more, and they received average or lower for

their academics. This does not only affect the students schedule as they not only have to

manage their time for classes and assignments, but they also have to manage and plan

their part-time job schedule accordingly. This will eventually affect their academic

performance and add to health problems such as fatigue. As the effect of this financial
11

problem, students tend to be less socialising, skip classes, and take a toll on theit health,

leading to poor academic performance.

However, some would spend on items that are not even necessary, Lack of

financial assistance and high financial problems whereby they might be financially

stressed can affect their academic performance. Some students came from privileged

families whereby parents could afford to provide money for their children. Sani (2019)

mentioned that some students can get ad-hoc weekly or monthly allowance from their

parents. This helps the students to manage their financials, thus them having low financial

problems. However, for those students who came from.

According to Olufemioladebinu, Adediran and Oyediran (2018), the parent's

income or social status has positively affected the students' academic performance in an

examination. This can be further supported by a previous study by Olufemioladebinu et

al. (2018) explained that students who come from low socio-economic family status tend

to show a poor academic performance compared to students who come from a better

family background status.

Review of Related Studies

Masselle (2015) stated that many poor students from low income household do

not have enough funds to afford enough sufficient food, in addition to that, other students

apply for scholarship to ese financial problem and other expenses. As a result, students

become preoccupied with finding ways of addressing and meeting their other financial

needs such as living accommodation, resources for assignment and registration fees and

this has a negative impact on their academic performance.

12

Based on the researchers own understanding, students tend to be preoccupied for

they are experiencing the lack of food and nutrition due to their financial problem. For

instance, when students are hungry, the can’t think straight and they tend to be

preoccupied. In this situation, it is impossible for them to focus and to finish the things

they intended to do.

Further, St . James Collages of Antipolo City Inc. (2018) Stated that the effect of

financial problem among students ins the lack of food, money and financial support,

poor health and decrease in the academic performance of students.

In addition to that, the researchers believe that the effects of financial problem

among students can be crucial if not addressed early, the lack of food due to financial

problem will cause hunger, and when a person or students is in the state of hunger, he/she

can’t focus on the things he/she intended to do that may lead to failure. The best way to

eases the financial problem is to make a good decision in our life and think smart to

spend money in other expenses.

According to Nnamani, Dikko and Kinta (2014), they mentioned that financial

problems of the students extremely contribute to the students’ low academic performance,

which therefore leads to the low quality of education in many ways. That is why financial

problems lead to the financial stress which will eventually influence the low academic

performance of the students, that statement was supported by widener (2017), he

mentioned that financial stress has been consistently related to the students’ low academic

performance.

For underprivileged students from low-income families, having a lack of

financial resources leads to financial problems. Some students depend solely on

13

education loans or scholarships, and some students depend on their families income. In

contrast, some have to work to self-finance their education and essential daily necessities.

Daud et al. (2018) stated that some students do not have other financial resources. They

do not have any savings. The students do not want to borrow money from others because

they do not want to burden themselves by owing to others and being in debt. Whereas

some students lack financial resources as they are reluctant to have a part time job as

these students do not want their academic performance to be affected (Daud et al., 2018).

According to Dang and Balus (2015), stated that many Americans are affected by

the economic downfall. Even college students often worry about their finances, which

then this financial worry may affect their academic performance as the students are

diving their attention between financial and academic. Hence this can be stated that the

family’s finances are motivation and encouragement for the students to have a good

academic performance. Asri et al. (2017) supporting Dang and Bulus statement, added

that when a highly motivated students encounters a financial problems, the students will

turn the problem into motivation for them to achieve success. Therefore, whatever

problems that come, which include financial problems, should not hinder the students if

they want to succeed academically.

Based on the researchers’ understanding, financial problem among the family can

be a discouragement or a motivation for students felt that is hard to continue their studies

due to financial problems that is when students felt that is hard to continue their studies

due to financial problems that is when it became a discouragement. But if students keeps

on thriving amidst the financial problem among their family, that is when it became a

motivation.
14

The result of Kartal's research (2017) showed that with a level of significance of

0.01, the obtained value was 0.610. The study indicated a close relationship between

reading habits and writing performance. The R square value demonstrated a 37.21%

association between the two variables.Additionally, related research was proceeded by

Wati (2021). The correlation coefficient between reading habit and writing ability was

higher than the r-table (0.51>0.329), which showed a positive correlation between the

two variables. Additionally, the t-value was 4.01. which was higher than the t-table of 1.7

at the significance level of 5%. Hence, Ha was accepted, and Ho was rejected. In other

words, there is a significant correlation between reading habits and writing performance.

On the contrary, the research by Risman, Jufrizal carried out, and Rozimela (2019)

reached a different conclusion. With the r obtained of 0.23 compared with the r-table of

0.329 at the 0.05 significance level, the study stated that there was no significant

correlation between reading habit and writing ability. There have been a great number of

well-organized studies on the correlation between reading habits and writing

performance, most of which emphasized the significant relationship between these two

variables. These studies, however, have not yet investigated the notion deeply and

thoroughly. There was a lack of investigation on which reading habit factor most

influenced writing achievement. Also, most authors did not apply both quantitative and

qualitative methods in their studies to gain wider views. This is because the students'

explanation for their reading patterns needs investigating by questionnaires and

interviews to gain a thorough understanding of students' perspectives. For this reason, the

present study was conducted to discover and clarify the reading habits of EFL students at

Van Lang University and to determine the correlation between their reading habits and
15

their writing performance through quantitative and qualitative methods. In light of the

research's findings, EFL teachers at Van Lang University can have obvious insights into

the impact of reading habits on students' writing performance, so they probably consider

developing plans for encouraging English majors' reading habits and reviewing effective

techniques for writing classes.

Definition of Terms

In this study researchers included the definition or terms that will serve a guide

and to make the study understandable. The researcher provided a definition of terms to

enable the readers to have a clear understanding to the problem. It makes the readers

interested to read the study and provide a clear understanding about the terms that used in

study. It helps the readers understand the specific meaning and context of the term in the

study. It ensures that everyone understand the terms in the same way, reducing confusion

or misinformation.

Stress and Anxiety. In this study, stress and anxiety are common experiences that

can effect everyone especially students. Stress is often a response to an external trigger,

such as work pressure, financial worries, or major life changer. Anxiety on the other

hand, tends to be more internal, manifesting as excessive worry for fear.

Academic achievement. In this study, academic achievement refers to the level of

success a students attains in their educational endeavors, typically measured through

grades, test score, or complement of educational milestone like degrees and certification.

It refers to the individual efforts of students that can used for their future.
16

Students. students are individual actively engaged in learning, typically in a

formal educational setting such as a school, college, or university. They come from

diverse background, each with unique experiences, learning styles, and challenges.

Financial Problem. Financial problem are one of the common issue that

struggled everyone to manage money effectively. Financial problem can arise from poor

budgeting, unexpected expenses, economic downturn, or mismanagement of resources.

Low income background. Coming from a low income background can present

unique financial challenges, but it also fosters and resourcefulness.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY
19

This chapters covers the detailed explanation of methodology use to make the

research flow smoothly and complete accordingly. The chapter explains how the

necessary data and information to address the research objectives and questions shall be

collected, processed and analyzed.

Research Design

A correlational research design was adopted to establish the influences of

financial problem on students academic achievements. This was aimed at understanding

the relationship among variables in such a way that leads to a descriptive study approach

aiding in achieving the necessary detailed and factual information that would allow an

accurate depiction of the phenomena existing at the time. Researchers systematically

described the situation and collected data from the respondents in order to analyze how

financial challenges affect academic performance. This study employed several statistical

treatments in an attempt to establish the level of relationship between financial problem

and students success. A correlational study will therefore allow a deeper investigation

into the way in which financial difficulties may affect students academic outcomes.

Recommendations from this study will guide educators and policymakers in developing

interventions targeted to the needs of the students in alleviating financial constraints.

Financial concerns can have a holistic perspective that looks into the interplay of these

financial concerns with academic achievements. The study used a correlational design

within a descriptive framework to enlighten into the possible complexities arising from

financial challenges towards students success. It may help the researcher identify

valuable insights through analysis of the correlation of variables to be applied in policy

20

strategies for the enhancement of academic outcomes given financial adversity. This

study therefore focuses on addressing financial barriers to education as a springboard to

ensure diverse opportunities for Masbate National Comprehensive High School students.

Sampling Method

Purposive sampling, a kind of non-probability sampling, was the sampling

technique used in this study. The researchers chose Grade 12 students from Masbate

National Comprehensive High School who they believed whole be most able to provide

pertinent information on how financial difficulties affect academic performance. The

researchers specifically selected high school pupils from various strands who had been

known or believed to have faced financial difficulties. Purposive sampling was used to

make sure that the respondents would be more qualified to offer insight into the study

objectives since they would have firsthand experience with financial challenges.

To provide a wide representation of responses across multiple academic fields, the

researchers will choose ten students in total from each academic strand. This approach

made it possible to comprehend the financial difficulties that students while diverse

academic backgrounds encountered while attempting to succeed academically in greater

detail. The researchers concentrated on students who are directly impacted by financial

issues in an effort to strike a balance sample size and the requirement for a representative

mix of the students population.

The approach allows the study to take into account the various academic

demands, social pressure, and support system that are present within each strand by

ensuring that the effects of financial issues on academic performance are observed across

a range of academic environments: students from different strands.

21

Data Gathering Procedure

The study conducted during the S.Y 2024-2025 at Masbate National

Comprehensive High School. The researchers prepared a following techniques to gather

more data about their respondents. The researchers followed some procedures to achieve

the objective of this study. Firstly, the researchers went to the different strands to ask

permission for being respondents of this study and approval to allow the researchers to
