and educational films).

The total duration of the PhD program depends on the

completion of required course work, approval of synopsis,
comprehensive exams, undertaking and publication of
research, writing up and public defence of thesis. The total
credit hours allocated for the course work and research/
thesis are approval by the Academic Council of PAF-IAST
in accordance with the criteria set by the Higher Education
Commission of Pakistan for the award of a PhD degree.
PHD PROGRAM OUTREACH ACTIVITIES
The PhD program outreach activities will be open to working collaboratively within the local/national communities: e.g. in projects
at women’s organizations, legal aid cells, as well as participatory research projects that would facilitate students/student projects
in the long run. Being open to liaison with local rights agencies/ minority groups/ activist segments etc. for collective events such
as film screenings, departmental film festivals (e.g. women’s organizations/NGOs for gender, and social justice issues, among
others) would encourage collaborative research-oriented opportunities for students and faculty.

Engagement with media outlets for collaborative events, particularly those producing film media (for example ARY/Geo/ Newsline
Films/Hum TV, etc. for hosting screenings of issue-oriented telefilms and other productions) is another avenue for outreach
www.paf-iast.edu.pk

activities. Bridging the gap between academia and media industry, this approach would connect the SDAAT to local outlets on a
regular basis and provide a fairly cost-effective (if not free) visibility to PAF-IAST.

These public engagement activities would also lead to internship and research opportunities/entry-level jobs for Film Studies, TV
and Moving Images students as they graduate to higher levels at the department, and career opportunities upon graduation with
a specialized degree in the discipline.

EHSAAS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Education beyond intermediate is one of the ways to overcome poverty.
However, access to higher education is itself distributed very unevenly.
For example, only 0.4% of the children from the lowest income quintile
(from the relevant age cohort) are enrolled in higher education institutions,
which is far below the national average of 10%. Ehsas scholarships aim
to eliminate this source of unequal access.

According to the National Human Development Report 2017, Pakistan

is one of the youngest country in the world. Realizing its demographic
reality which has a population of around 220 million out of which more
than half are of university age cohort, the priority of Government of
Pakistan is to work on such programs which give drive
to provide access to financially deserving and also
encourages gender equity. The strategy is to create
opportunities for a sizeable segment of youth to bring
them under the net of higher education and create
equal education opportunities for all.

This is the largest ever needs-based undergraduate

scholarship program in the history of Pakistan. Under
this program, every year, 50,000 students from low-
