ARTIST’S NOTE
The Wedding at Cana
This week’s service invites us to encounter God’s transformative
love. Martin Luther King Jr.’s evocative poem imagines a future
where suffering and injustice are replaced by peace and hope: “One
day… youngsters will learn words they will not understand… What is
war? You will answer them: Those words are not used any more.”
His vision reflects Jesus’ mission proclaimed in today’s Gospel,
where He declares that the Spirit has anointed Him to bring good
news to the poor, release to the captives, and freedom to the
oppressed. Our music draws us deeper into this calling. The opening
hymn, The Spacious Firmament on High, celebrates the beauty of
creation, echoing the psalmist’s words, “The heavens declare the
glory of God.” During communion, I Come with Joy to Meet My Lord
reminds us of the unity and joy found at Christ’s table, where we are
nourished to live as His body in the world. We close with We All Are
One in Mission, a call to go forth in faith, united in sharing God’s love.
Rembrandt’s painting Jesus Preaching offers a visual reflection on
Christ’s ministry, drawing us into the sacred moment where His
words of liberation and grace resonate with power. Together, these
artistic and musical expressions remind us of our shared mission to
embody God’s love and renewal in the world.
“To sing is to pray twice” – St. Augustine
In the Episcopal church, quite often we cycle through countless
hymns and in this short time, we only catch a small glimpse into the
abundant beauty of the poetic texts paired with soul-filled music. In
efforts to deepen our understanding of and strengthen our
connection to these hymns, over the course of our year, we will be
singing a “Hymn of the Month” during Communion. Take time to
read the text thoroughly as if it were poetry and find your unique
perspective on the poem. If the hymns are familiar to you, sing them
boldly and with great spirit. If they are new to you, we embolden you
to lift your voice and try. There is no shame in this place — your
voice is God-made and worthy.

The Hymn of the Season is hymn 304 “I come with joy to meet my
Lord” set to the tune Land of Rest. Land of Rest is an American folk
tune with roots in the ballads of northern England and Scotland. It
was known throughout the Appalachians; a shape-note version of the
tune was published in The Sacred Harp (1844). The text comes from
Brian A. Wren, a major British figure in the revival of contemporary
hymn writing. Wren’s texts can be found throughout the Hymnal
1982.
Together met, together bound
by all that God has done,
we'll go with joy, to give the world
the love that makes us one.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
THE FIRST LESSON Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10
All the people of Israel gathered together into the square before the
Water Gate. They told the scribe Ezra to bring the book of the law of
Moses, which the Lord had given to Israel. Accordingly, the priest
6
Ezra brought the law before the assembly, both men and women and
all who could hear with understanding. This was on the first day of
the seventh month. He read from it facing the square before the
Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the
men and the women and those who could understand; and the ears
of all the people were attentive to the book of the law. And Ezra
opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing
above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up.
Then Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people
answered, "Amen, Amen," lifting up their hands. Then they bowed
their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. So
they read from the book, from the law of God, with interpretation.
They gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.
And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and
scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people,
"This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep." For
all the people wept when they heard the words of the law. Then he
said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat and drink sweet wine and
send portions of them to those for whom nothing is prepared, for
this day is holy to our Lord; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the
Lord is your strength."
Reader The Word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God.
THE RESPONSE Psalm 36:5-10
Prayed responsively by whole verse.
1 The heavens declare the glory of God, *
and the firmament shows his handiwork.
2 One day tells its tale to another, *
and one night imparts knowledge to another.
3 Although they have no words or language, *
and their voices are not heard,
4 Their sound has gone out into all lands, *
and their message to the ends of the world.
7
5 In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun; *
it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber;
it rejoices like a champion to run its course.
6 It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens
and runs about to the end of it again; *
nothing is hidden from its burning heat.
7 The law of the Lord is perfect
and revives the soul; *
the testimony of the Lord is sure
and gives wisdom to the innocent.
8 The statutes of the Lord are just
and rejoice the heart; *
the commandment of the Lord is clear
and gives light to the eyes.
9 The fear of the Lord is clean
and endures for ever; *
the judgments of the Lord are true
and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
more than much fine gold, *
sweeter far than honey,
than honey in the comb.
11 By them also is your servant enlightened, *
and in keeping them there is great reward.
12 Who can tell how often he offends? *
cleanse me from my secret faults.
13 Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins;
let them not get dominion over me; *
then shall I be whole and sound,
and innocent of a great offense.
14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my
heart be acceptable in your sight, *
O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.
THE SECOND LESSON 1 Corinthians 12:12-31a
Just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members
of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in
8
the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--Jews or Greeks,
slaves or free--and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the
foot would say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the
body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the
ear would say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the
body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the
whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole
body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is,
God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he
chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is,
there are many members, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the
hand, "I have no need of you," nor again the head to the feet, "I have
no need of you." On the contrary, the members of the body that
seem to be weaker are indispensable, and those members of the body
that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our
less respectable members are treated with greater respect; whereas
our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so
arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member,
that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members
may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all
suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together
with it.
Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And
God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets,
third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of
assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all
apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?
Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all
interpret? But strive for the greater gifts.
Reader The Word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION MHSO 86 V. 2
In the bulb there is a flower
Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according
to Luke.
People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
THE GOSPEL Luke 4:14-21
Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and
a report about him spread through all the surrounding country.
He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by
everyone.
When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he
went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom.
He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was
given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where
it was written:
10
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat
down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he
began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your
hearing.".
Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord.
People Praise to you, Lord Christ.
THE SERMON The Rev. Christian Baron
THE NICENE CREED
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
11
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Celebrant: This day is holy to God, for the joy of the Divine is our
strength. The scripture is fulfilled in our hearing, and this is the year
of God's favor: Gracious and loving One, fill your church with the
power of your Spirit, that we may bring good news to the poor,
release to the captives, and liberation to the oppressed. For we are
members of one body, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Litanist: The Church is the body of Christ and we are individually
members of it. Creative and Holy One, you have appointed
ministries in your Church and given gifts to all: Let the words of our
mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in your sight,
O God, our strength and our redeemer.
For we are members of one body;
and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
The judgments of God are true and righteous altogether; the
testimony of God is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent: Eternal
One, guide the leaders of the world and all in authority with the
power of your Spirit, that your mission of healing and reconciliation
may bring freedom, unity and peace to all creation.
For we are members of one body;
12
and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
We know that if one suffers, all suffer together; if one is honored, all
rejoice together: Compassionate One, let your healing and uniting
power go forth into all the world to comfort all who are ill, to bring
peace and liberation to those who are oppressed, and to bring good
news to the poor.
For we are members of one body;
and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
The commandment of God is clear and gives light to the
eyes: Inspiring One, anoint our community with your generous
compassion, that there may be no dissension within the body and
that we may treat our less respectable members with greater respect.
For we are members of one body;
and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Hear our prayers of intercession and healing, especially for ___.
Accept our thanksgiving with those who rejoice, especially ___.
Enfold into your eternal life those who have died, especially ___.
For we are members of one body;
and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Celebrant: Your judgment, O God, is sweeter far than honey, and in
keeping your word there is great reward: Cleanse us from our secret
faults and keep your servants from presumptuous sins, that we may
be whole and sound, and innocent of a great offense, as we seek to
live out the good news of your anointed One Jesus Christ in the
power of the Spirit, this day and forever. Amen.
THE CONFESSION
Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence
13
God of all mercy,
we confess that we
have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.
We have denied your goodness in each other,
in ourselves, and in the world you have created.
We repent of the evil that enslaves us,
the evil we have done,
and the evil done on our behalf.
Forgive, restore, and strengthen us
through our Savior Jesus Christ,
that we may abide in your love
and serve only your will.
Amen.
ABSOLUTION
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through
our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the
power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
THE PEACE
Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People And also with you.

Give thanks for life
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Lift up your hearts.
People We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to give God thanks and praise.
15
We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of
life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your
Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun,
moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You
made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we
rebelled against you, and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother
cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you
called us to live in the fullness of your love.
And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of
praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as
we sing:
SANCTUS S 125
Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver
us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your
grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that
she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God.
Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and
sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He
16
yearned to draw all the world to himself, yet we were heedless of his
call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon
the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you.
On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends.
He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and
said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for
the remembrance of me.”
As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave
thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This
is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and
for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for
the remembrance of me.”
Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering
Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to
you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice. Pour
out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood
of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your
new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made.
In the fullness of time bring us, with all your saints, from every tribe
and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared
from the foundation of the world. Through Christ and with Christ
and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory,
and praise, for ever and ever. Amen.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
17
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
FRACTION HYMN S 169
