Community Connection Worksheet

Directions: Interview a businessperson, a technician or a scientist about his or her use of


technical writing on the job. Ask if he or she would share a sample of writing that you can take to
class. Here are some questions to guide you.

Interview with a Business Analyst

1.) What is your job title?

My job title is Business Analyst.

2.) Describe your job.

As a Business Analyst, I work to identify business needs and find technical solutions to business
problems. I collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements, analyze data, and create
documentation that helps guide project development.

3.) What are the most important skills needed for success in your work?

Critical thinking, strong communication skills, and attention to detail are essential. Additionally,
being able to work collaboratively with different teams and understanding technical concepts is
crucial.

4.) What types of documents do you write most often?

I frequently write requirements documents, project proposals, user stories, and process flow
diagrams. I also create reports and presentations for stakeholders.

5.) How do you communicate with coworkers and clients in a typical day?

I communicate through emails, meetings, and collaborative tools like Slack or Microsoft Teams. I
also conduct presentations and workshops to gather feedback and share updates.
6.) What software programs do you use to create documents?

I primarily use Microsoft Word for documentation, Excel for data analysis, and Visio for creating
flowcharts. I also use project management tools like JIRA and Confluence.

7.) Has a mistake ever been made on the job because of inaccurate or ineffective
communication or reporting? If so, explain.

Yes, there was an instance where a miscommunication regarding project requirements led to
the development of a feature that did not meet client expectations. This resulted in additional
work and delays. We learned the importance of thorough documentation and regular check-ins
with stakeholders.

8.) How did you prepare for the writing skills your job requires?

I took several writing courses during college, focusing on technical writing and business
communication. Additionally, I practiced writing by working on various projects and seeking
feedback from peers and mentors.

9.) What high school and college courses were most helpful in your career today?

In high school, I found English and computer science courses to be very helpful. In college,
courses in business communication, data analysis, and project management were particularly
beneficial.
