SPECIAL INSPECTIONS
The following special inspections supplement the basic inspections
to ensure that components and systems, vulnerable to
malfunctions under adverse environmental conditions or
continuous operation from rough, unpaved fields, are thoroughly
inspected. In addition, special inspections related to conditions
which are not environmental in nature are included. Accomplish the
inspections as necessary, according to the conditions under which
the aircraft is being operated.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Unpaved landing Fields, Arctic Conditions, Floats install from Salt
Water, Converting to Wheels or Skis, High Salt Marine Environment,
High Industrial Pollution, Desert or Areas of High Dust Content,
Areas of High Humidity and Livestock or Corrosive Material Cargo.
For information on the geographic locations related to High Salt
Marine Environments, refer to PSM 1-6-7 Part 3, Para 5.B.
OPERATING FROM UNPAVED LANDING FIELDS
Daily
A1 Antennas on underside of fuselage for cleanliness and damage.
A2 Anti-collision light on underside of fuselage and taxi light (if installed) for
cleanliness and damage.
A3 For damage caused by flying debris; nose landing gear, main leg fairings,
fuselage sides between nose and passenger doors, wing center and flap
under surfaces.
A4 Engine air intakes and ram air inlets for damage and obstruction by grass
cuttings, weed, etc.
Every 100 Flying Hours
A5 Remove main wheels and inspect in accordance with instructions on
Card No. 3.
A6 Remove nose wheel and inspect in accordance with instruction on Card
No. 1 (item 9).
OPERATING UNDER ARCTIC CONDITIONS
Daily
B1 Wire and whip antennas for ice accumulation.
B2 Landing gear for cleanliness; areas around movable parts free of ice,
snow or moisture.
B3 Escape doors and/or emergency hatch for ice formation around seals.
B4 Flight control cables. (PSM 1-6-7, SP1-B4).

Every 6 Months
C1 Remove access panels and fairings as necessary to gain access to items
listed below. Examine these items visually for cracks and corrosion,
paying particular attention to immediate areas around bolt holes and
bearings, where visible, and along attachment and pickup fittings mating
edges. Evidence of corrosion at areas indicated above requires removal
of bolts for internal examination of holes and condition of bolts. Evidence
of internal corrosion will necessitate disengaging fittings for further
inspection and treatment as required. Corrosion around bonding
jumpers, where fitted, will necessitate cleaning and repriming of affected
areas.
(a) Vertical stabilizer/rudder hinge arms.
(b) Horizontal stabilizer/elevator hinge arms.
(c) Elevator torque tube.
(d) Vertical and horizontal stabilizers, attachment fittings.
(e) Float/fuselage attachment fittings.
(f) Wing strut pickup fittings, wing and fuselage.
(g) Wing/fuselage attachment fittings front and rear.
(h) Extend flaps for examination of wing/flap hinge arms.
(i) Aileron/flap hinge arms.
(j) Engine mounts (nacelle).
(k) Engine vibration isolator housings (core recess radius).
(l) Fuel Gallery (under fuselage area).
Every 2 years
C2 Remove wing flaps and examine hinge arms, bolts, bolt holes and
bearings for corrosion and seized condition, as applicable. Pay particular
attention to areas around bearings.
Every 1 year
C3 Inspect nose attachment STA 44.0 (Mods 6/2020, 6/2502) for corrosion
and cracks.
NOTE: Pay particular attention to the exterior aluminum joint strap
and fasteners common to carbon nose.

NOTE 2: For Mod 6/2020 and Mod 6/2502, refer to added susceptible
area PSM 1-6-5 Part 2/3 (CPCM C53-11-05) for STA 44.0
exterior aluminum joint straps and fasteners common to
the carbon nose corrosion inspection.
E3 Remove fuel gallery access panels on underside of fuselage to inspect
all wiring for corrosion and deterioration, radio suppressors and gallery
structure for corrosion.

For Mod 6/2390, visually inspect environmental wrap for condition,


integrity (split, tear or removal etc.), corrosion, external wiring,
connections and terminations for deterioration.
NOTE: Any degradation in the environmental wrap, remove wrap
and do a detailed visual inspection of electrical wiring,
connections and terminations for condition and corrosion.
Replace damaged components. Install new environmental
wrap (refer to PSM1-64-2, Chapter 20-50-03).

For Mod 6/2395, do a detailed visual inspection of the backshell and


backshell sealant for deterioration in the seal cavities. If deterioration is
evident, clean and reseal the backshell. Replace if deterioration is
severe.
E3.1 Fuel Manifold (6/2389) - Bonding clamp sealant and terminal lug sealant
for condition and integrity, peeling, cracking or evidence of corrosion.
Inspect bonding jumpers for condition, security, integrity and corrosion. If
damaged, replace component; re-apply sealant.
E3.2 Inspect access panels and seals for damage (Mod 6/2408). Repair or
replace as required.

NOTE 1: Pay particular attention to locations aft of STA 262.00, at
pulley stations, fairleads at STA 436.00 and STA 486.34.
NOTE 2: In the event of early or abnormal cable wear at pulley(s),
replace the worn cable(s) and the corresponding pulley(s).
NOTE 3: Stainless Steel Control Cables are approved for use on
float aircraft in lieu of Carbon Steel Cables. Refer to
PSM 1-6-2 (DHC-6 Series 100/200 Maintenance Manual),
PSM 1-63-2 (DHC-6 Series 300 Maintenance Manual) and
PSM 1-64-2 (DHC-6 Series 400 Maintenance Manual) and
Technical Advisory Bulletin (TAB) 678/3 for cable
specification.
NOTE 4: Inspection interval may be reduced, if required.
Every 12 Months
E5 Replace Primary Flight Control Cables (Rudder and Elevator)
Every 3000 Flight Hours or 3 Years, Whichever Occurs First
E6 Fuel Manifold (6/2389) - Inspect Fuel Manifolds under bonding clamp
sealant for corrosion. Remove sealant, bonding clamps and jumpers.
Inspect tube for corrosion and pitting. Replace clamps, bonding jumpers
and hardware with new; reseal clamps grounding hardware and terminal
lugs.
OPERATING IN ATMOSPHERES OF
HIGH INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION
F1 When there is loss of engine performance attributed to ingestion of air
pollution deposits; wash engine compressor in accordance with
instructions in Maintenance Manual.

security and free of obstruction. Clean as required.
G9 MAU (Mod 6/2049), visually inspect the mesh covering the air intake for
dust and debris. Clean as required.
OPERATING IN AREAS OF HIGH HUMIDITY
Every 50 Flight Hours
H1 All exterior surfaces and components for corrosion.

NOTE 3: Stainless Steel Control Cables are approved for use on
float aircraft in lieu of Carbon Steel Cables. Refer to

PSM 1-63-2 (DHC-6 Series 300 Maintenance Manual) and
PSM 1-64-2 (DHC-6 Series 400 Maintenance Manual) and
Technical Advisory Bulletin (TAB) 678/3 for cable
specification.
NOTE 4: Inspection interval may be reduced, if required.

E5 Replace Primary Flight Control Cables (Rudder and Elevator)
Every 3000 Flight Hours or 3 Years, Whichever Occurs First
E6 Fuel Manifold (6/2389) - Inspect Fuel Manifolds under bonding clamp
sealant for corrosion. Remove sealant, bonding clamps and jumpers.
Inspect tube for corrosion and pitting. Replace clamps, bonding jumpers
and hardware with new; reseal clamps grounding hardware and terminal
lugs.
OPERATING IN ATMOSPHERES OF
HIGH INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION
F1 When there is loss of engine performance attributed to ingestion of air
pollution deposits; wash engine compressor in accordance with
instructions in Maintenance Manual.

dust and debris. Clean as required.

Part 2/3 (CPCM C53-11-05) for STA 44.0 exterior aluminum
joint straps and fasteners common to the carbon nose
corrosion inspection.

H2 Floor understructure, check for corrosion by removing floor panels and
inspecting undersurface, especially channel sections.
H3 Fuel gallery; inspect access panels and seals for damage (Mod 6/2408).

J3 Remove fuel gallery access panels on underside of fuselage and inspect
all wiring for corrosion and deterioration, radio suppressors and gallery
structure for corrosion.

For Mod 6/2390, visually inspect environmental wrap for condition,


integrity (split, tear or removal etc.), corrosion, external wiring,
connections and terminations for deterioration.
NOTE: Any degradation in the environmental wrap, remove wrap
and do a detailed visual inspection of electrical wiring,
connections and terminations for condition and corrosion.
Replace damaged components. Install new environmental
wrap (refer to PSM1-64-2, Chapter 20-50-03).

For Mod 6/2395, do a detailed visual inspection of the backshell and


backshell sealant for deterioration in the seal cavities. If deterioration is
evident, clean and reseal the backshell. Replace if deterioration is
severe.
