Problem 1. 2

let’s take the exercise ?? shown in section ?? page ??. Calculate the mutual inductance M. To
determine the mutual inductances, we carry out the two circuits shown in figures ?? and ??. From
the values of the voltages and currents, calculate the mutual inductances M12 , M21 of the two coils.

I1= 0.65 A

V21= 143.5V
V11= 240 V

Figure 2
I2= 1.05 A

V22= 240 V
V12= 213.8V

Figure 3

Solution

1. For circuit 1 (see Figure ??) we calculate the mutual inductance between coil 1 and coil 2:

1 V21 1 143.5
M12 = × = × = 0.586 H
ω I1 120π 0.65

2. circuit 2 (see Figure ??) we calculate the self inductance of the mutual inductance between coil
2 and coil 1:
1 V12 1 231.8
M12 = × = × = 0.586 H
ω I2 120π 1.05

Applying KVL by respecting the dot convention gives

We have : I = j ω I Thus :

 
 U s = Rs I s + j ω Ls I s + j ω M I r 120 = (4 + j5) I s + j3 I r

⇒
 0 = Rr I r + j ω Lr I r + j ω M I s 0 = (12 + j6) I r + j3 I s
(12 + j6) I r
Is = − = (−2 + j4) I r
j3
120 = [(4 + j5) × (−2 + j4) + j3] I r

120 = (−28 + j9) I r ⇒ I r = −3.8 − j1.24 A

I s = 12.76 − j13.04

Problem 1. 4

M13
For the three coupled coils in figure ??, calculate the
M12 M23
total inductance. we give : L1 = 6 H, L2 = 8 H, L3 = i1 L1 L2 L3
10 H, M12 = 4 H, M23 = 5 H, and M13 = 2 H.
Figure 5
Solution

For coil 1 : L1 − M12 + M13 . For coil 2 : L2 − M12 − M23 For coil 3 : L3 − M23 + M13

Thus : Lt = L1 + L2 + L3 − 2 (M12 + M23 − M13 ) = 24 − 2 × 7 = 10 H
