Teaching Reading
Task 1: Concepts and terminology to describe reading

For questions 1- 5, look at the concepts and terminology to describe reading. Two of
the statements listed A, B or C describe a feature of each concept, and there is one
statement that does not belong in each group.

Circle the option A, B or C that does not belong in each group.

Task 2: Lesson Planning

For questions 6 – 10, put the stages below in the sequence in which you think they
were set by the teacher. Number them in the spaces provided after each activity.

6. Students look for material about Eskimos at home and use it to produce a
poster for the classroom noticeboard. __________

7. The teacher asks the students to tell him what they know about Eskimos,
things they are not sure of and things they would like to know, and writes up

possible to confirm or not the information on the whiteboard. __________

9. The teacher gives students some true or false questions about the text.

10. Students work in pairs. One member of the pair is a British television reporter,
and the other an Eskimo. The reporter is making a programme about the life of
the Eskimos and is therefore asking questions about how they live, etc. The
students playing the role of Eskimo will get their information from the text.

10. Have a look at the magazine covers on p 23 of your books. Look at them and
decide which magazine you’d like to buy.

11. Look at the Contents table in your book. Who can tell me which unit deals with
the issue of pollution?

12. Read the poem on p 56 and write down how you think the writer felt when
writing it.

13. For next class, you are each going to choose a book from the library and
prepare a 2’ presentation on what you’ve read.

14. Read paragraph 1 and find out how old Tom was when he first fell in love.

20. Listen to the following sounds. Decide who or what is making them and
where.
