FLAT GATE VALVE

Operation &Maintenance
Manual

Suzhou Douson Drilling & Production Equipment Co., Ltd.


This manual applies to all the slab gate valve manufactured by our company. This product is
used as a main accessory of wellhead and manifold as well as can be separately used upon
request.

Ⅱ. STRUCTURE INFORMATION
2.1 The design and manufacture of this product fully meet the requirements of API Spec 6A,
《 Specification for Wellhead and Christmas Tree Equipment 》 . It can be used with and
interchangeable with the domestic and imported equipment conforming to API Spec 6A.
2.2 This valve uses a “floating” slab gate (not a wedge gate). The free float of the metallic gate
between metallic seats, with the aid of sealing compound and a medium, effects sealing of
this valve. At any time the body cavity can hold pipe line pressure in bore.
2.3 The bonnet and body are jointed by using bolts. A ring gasket providing the
pressure-energized seal acts as the sealing member that makes the assembly clearance
(Design value is zero) between the bonnet and body very small, thus reducing corrosion of
the medium against the bolts and bolt holes.

2.4 This gate valve includes rising stem ,non-rising stem or hydraulic operated. This gate valve
has also equilibrium foot piece and nonequilibrium foot piece.An rising stem design not only
indicates the valve position at a glance and protects stem threads, which can be separately
lubricated, from the medium. This gate valve uses a non-rising stem design which protects
stem threads from the medium. The hydraulic structure can perform remote control.
2.5 The use of carbide alloy overlays on surfaces of the gate and seat enables them to have
good wear and corrosion resistance, the stem is made of an anti—sulphate steel, And the
other parts use the method of hardness restriction. Therefore, this product can be used in
H2S service. It can be made of stainless steel upon request.
2.6 The alemite fitting on the screw housing is specially provided for bearing lubrication,
facilitating pumping lubricating grease in the field. There are three vents (under the alemite
fitting) where surplus grease will escape. These vents, which allow the operator to know
the condition of the lubricating grease being pumped and provide a means of releasing the
medium to atmosphere in the event of stem lip packing leakage, are covered by O-rings at
ordinary times to prevent contamination.

2.7 The stem thread is of the left-handed and trapezoidal thread type. Turn the stem clockwise
and the valve will close; turn the stem counter-clockwise and the valve will open, which
conforms to the common practice.

Ⅲ. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
3.1 Rotate the hand wheel counter-clockwise until the stem reach the designed position, and
after that the hand wheel shall be backed off 1/4-1/2 turn.
3.2 Rotate the hand wheel clockwise until the gate is driven against the bottom of the valve
body, and after that the hand wheel shall be backed off 1/4-1/2turn.
3.3 The gate, a closure member that moves in the direction perpendicular to the centerline of
the passageway, is effective only in blocking the passageway. Therefore, this valve is not
intended to be used as a choke valve, which means that this valve must be in either the full
open or full closed position as it works.
3.4 The gate effects sealing by floating between two seats, so it shall be allowed to move freely,
which means the hand wheel shall be backed off 1/4-1/2 turn after the hand wheel rotation
can go no further.
3.5 The stem protector cannot be removed at will, as it will act as a stop mechanism when the
stem rises.
3.6 Do not tie the hand wheel with a hoisting rope during transportation,
3.7 During operation, rotate the hand wheel slowly so as not to damage the stem and stem
protector at the time when the hand wheel rotation will soon end.

IV. MAINTENANCE INFORMATION


4.1 Replacement of Gate and Seat
4.1.1 Bleed off the trapped pressure in the body cavity, remove the bonnet bolting and remove
the bonnet assembly along with the gate off the body. If it is very difficult to remove the gate,
it may be necessary to lightly bump the balance stem with a copper bar until the gate is
removed.
4.1.2 Remove the seat and gate guide with a screwdriver or a small lever.
4.1.3 Be more careful to clean and lubricate the seat pocket while cleaning the body cavity.
4.1.4 After good lubrication of the seat outer diameter and gate guide, lightly bump the replaced
seat assembly with a copper bar to help enter it into the valve body.
4.1.5 Paint sealing compound on both sides of the gate before installing it into the body. With
the gate in the open position, insert the stem already attached to the bonnet inside the “T”
slot on the gate, replace the ring gasket with a new one and then assemble the bonnet.
4.1.6 Pump sealing compound, and cycle the gate several times from the open position to the
closed position to demonstrate proper assembly and easy operation.
4.2 Replacement of Stem Lip Packing
Pump secondary sealing compound through a check valve inside the grease fitting on the
bonnet in the event of stem packing leakage. If severe, check lip packing for damage.
Replace, if necessary.
CAUTION: Bleed off the trapped pressure in the body cavity before replacing stem lip
packing.

Ⅴ. LUBRICATION AND SEALING


5.1 The thrust bearings are lubricated with lubricating grease. They can be well lubricated at a
time by using a grease gun to pump calcium-based grease during assembly or after
assembly. Every time after use, check the consumption of lubricating grease. If necessary,
replenish it without delay. Replace it if it goes bad or is contaminated.
5.2 Every time after use, the body cavity shall be cleaned and refilled with sealing compound to
lubricate the gate and seat, which ensures the reliability of sealing properties.
5.3 Stem threads can be lubricated by lubricant in light of operation conditions.
