Sri Surya Kavacham & Stotram – Brahma Vaivarta Puranam

This document consists of three parts containing hymns on Sri Surya – Sri Surya
Mantra, Sri Surya Kavacham and Surya Stotra Rajam. They are found in Brahma Vaivarta
Puranam, Ganapati Khanda, Chatper 19 (which describes the Surya Pujavidhi especially in
Pushkar Kshetra – a holy pilgrimage center in Rajasthan near Ajmer).

Surya Mantra
The second line of this hymn introduces a very rare and potent mantra on Lord Surya –
OM hrIM namo bhagavate sUryAya paramAtmane svAhA. One who worships Lord Surya
with a Shodasopachara Puja and this mantra for a year becomes completely relieved of all
diseases and illnesses.

Surya Kavacham
The rare Surya Kavacham (titled Jagad Vilakshana Surya Kavacham) that follows the
above mantra is said to be very potent and given by Brihaspati to Indra when he was cursed
by Sage Gautama for having illicit relationship with Sage’s wife Ahalya. This Kavacha was
originally given to Manu by Sage Pulastya at Pushkar.
One who chants this Kavacham gets complete cure from all diseases and begets all
wealth. The mere chanting of this Kavacham gives the benefit of eating Havishyannam
(cooked rice offered to Gods in Homas) for ten lakh years. One who worships Lord Bhaskara
without knowing this Kavacham will not attain Siddhi even if chants mantras for a million
times.

Surya Stotra Rajam

The short prayer hymn that follows the Kavacham is titled Stotra Rajam (or a royal
praise or King of Prayers) and is considered to be the most sacred. This Kavacham is
according to Sama Veda.
One who chants this stotram thrice a day gets complete cure from deadliest of
diseases like leprosy, blindness, Small/Chicken pox, etc. if he eats Havishyanna for a month
along with this prayer. This also gives the benefit of bathing in all holy waters.
