FROM THE EDITOR

FOR THE FAMILY

O
ur February 2025 issue is dedicated to family homes and was a wonderful issue to put together. It
reminded me of what is really important in the home – it goes over and above the furniture, the
colours, the design and everything else that goes into a property. It is about ensuring you and
your family have a safe and welcoming space they can call “home”.
As humans, we always look for the things that feel like home to us, and knowing that within
these pages, we have put together features that will inspire you to create the perfect family
residence makes this issue all the more special. While browsing, look at the kitchens feature on page 126 – it
explains how you can get a safe designer kitchen the whole family can enjoy. Then on page 134, the bathroom
feature explores ways to design and finish bathrooms suitable for all ages. The lounge is the ideal area to catch
up with the family at the end of the day, so read the interiors feature on page 146 and see how you can create a
cosy and welcoming lounge. On page 154, there is some inspiration for furniture pieces for a child’s room.
Finally, on page 99 you will find a special section dedicated to luxury imported furniture. So, if you are
looking for the latest in high-end furniture, don’t forget to read this section.
From our homes to yours, happy reading and have a fab Feb!

SHARES HIS TOP TIPS FOR TAKING
CARE OF WOODEN FURNITURE TO
ENSURE LONGEVITY

W
ood has a timeless
appeal – it brings a
sense of warmth into
the home while enhancing
the tranquillity of a space. If you want your wooden
furniture pieces to remain in top condition and ensure they maintain
their impeccable aesthetics, follow the tips below.

DUST REGULARLY
Wood can be used in a variety of applications for an on-trend look.
Dusting your furniture regularly is the first step in maintaining
its appearance. Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a feather duster
to remove dust from the surface gently. Avoid using abrasive
materials or harsh chemicals that can damage the finish. AVOID EXTREME TEMPERATURES
Extreme temperatures and fluctuations in humidity can cause
wood to expand or contract, leading to cracks and warping.
CLEAN SPILLS IMMEDIATELY

heating vents, fireplaces or areas with excessive moisture.
Use a clean, damp cloth to blot the spill, avoiding rubbing or
scrubbing. Avoid alcohol or bleach-based cleaning agents as this
will soften and wear away the sealer on wooden furniture. USE COASTERS AND PLACEMATS
To prevent scratches, water rings and heat damage, always

maintain your wooden furniture once every two months after
cleaning with a damp cloth.
REGULARLY ROTATE CUSHIONS
If your furniture has removable cushions, rotate them
regularly to distribute wear and maintain their shape.

PROTECT FROM SUNLIGHT

Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause fading and
damage to your furniture. Position your furniture away
from direct sunlight or use curtains and blinds to block out
harmful UV rays.

PROFESSIONAL CLEANING OF UPHOLSTERY

For deep cleaning or stubborn stains, consider hiring a
professional furniture cleaner. They have the expertise and
specialised equipment to safely and effectively clean your
furniture without causing harm.

REGULAR INSPECTIONS
Periodically inspect your furniture for any signs of damage,
loose joints or wear. Addressing these issues promptly can
prevent further damage and extend your furniture’s lifespan.

STORE PROPERLY
If you need to store your furniture for an extended period,
take the necessary precautions. Clean and dry the pieces
thoroughly and store them in a clean, dry and well-
ventilated area.

Wooden furniture pieces offer a sense of instant warmth in the home.

The Porsche Panamera 4 delivers an unmatched driving experience, seamlessly blending
remarkable performance, cutting-edge technology and an eye-catching design. Its bold stance is
complemented by sleek, aerodynamic lines. Powered by a high-performance engine, an 8-speed
Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission and a meticulously crafted chassis, the Panamera
strikes the perfect balance between power and efficiency. It accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 5.0
seconds (4.8 with the Sport Chrono package) and reaches a top speed of 270km/h. The 2.9-litre
twin-turbo V6 engine generates an amazing 260kW (353PS) and 500Nm of torque.

60 FEBRUARY 2025
As part of the home’s redesign, the owners requested
the preservation of the lower level of the structure and a
transformation of the upper living area that features the
main living spaces and a terrace. This layout was selected to
capitalise on natural light and provide unobstructed views
of the surroundings. Guest rooms are located on the lower
level along with a gym and additional recreation spaces.
The terrace off the open-plan living area is a favourite
spot, providing a connection to the outdoors and making
for a tranquil, inviting space for guests to relax.
A primary challenge of the project was the property’s
exposure to intense sunlight. The designers addressed this
by incorporating perforated metal screens on the facade.
“These sliding screens offer adjustable sun protection,
filtering light in soft patterns that mirror the ocean’s
reflections, enhancing both comfort and the home’s
connection to its environment,” explains another of the
architectural designers.
The owners took charge of the décor with the
designers guiding their selections to align with the home’s
architectural style. The interior is restrained yet warm,
emphasising natural materials.
“Lighting choices are minimalist, including pendant lights
that softly illuminate the space without detracting from
the natural light,” says the designer. “Accessories like natural
stone vases and wooden accents tie the neutral palette
together, ensuring the views remain the main attraction.”

stone create a textured modern look mixed with a farmhouse
feel, which I love.” This aesthetic is continued throughout the
interior. In the living room, an exposed roof with an elevated
wooden beam and fan, as well as the wooden-clad chimney flue,
add dramatic flair. On their own, the black steel beams could be
seen as masculine. However, when paired with poplar wooden
beams and an oak-clad rounded kitchen island with flutes and
brass finishes, the overall feel is one of warmth with a touch of
glamour. “I also believe in bringing greenery into a space to make
it feel warm and organic.”
Greenery features throughout the home with the ample vistas
from the enlarged windows making the garden an important

SCHEPPEN 083 267 4838
Bespoke residential construction company Scheppen was commissioned to build this arresting
home. The brief was to construct a three-level property on a hillside. As the home is situated
in a fynbos ecologically sensitive area, extra care was taken to limit the impact on the
environment. The building consists of a concrete structure with challenging round curves, steel
and timber to complement the design on three levels. In this project, Scheppen was responsible
for an entire turnkey solution, which included all facets of the project such as design,
construction, interior and landscaping.

UNPARALLELED QUALITY
Since 1934, the Molteni Group has made the continuous pursuit of quality
its mission. Attention to detail and continuous technological investments
offer products of unparalleled quality, and since 1979 Molteni&C has
found Dada the ideal partner for the production of kitchens.
With a strong focus on craftsmanship, Dada Engineered has built an
unrivalled reputation for its unyielding obsession with quality, thanks
to a thorough in-house production cycle. Its craftspeople’s expertise
blends artistry and engineering to create modern customised designs.
The materials are natural and precious and the finishes are understated
and textured. Every object therefore acquires the intrinsic charm of an
architectural furnishing element.

VVD BY VINCENT VAN DUYSEN

Among all the kitchens, VVD by Vincent Van Duysen is undoubtedly the
one with the most elaborate details and unique components. The upper
outline of the cabinet door in aluminium defines the facade, thanks to
its ergonomic profile available in three metallic finishes. The terminal
panels give a distinctive touch to the final part of the countertops,
while the finger recess provides a clean and elegant design. Open
bases, an external sink and trays beneath the countertops complete the
overall design. Vincent Van Duysen reinterprets the finger recess detail
in a modern and sophisticated manner. The combination of different
materials and the interplay of solids and voids create a dynamic,
sophisticated kitchen. VVD, known for its intricate details and unique
components, underwent enhancements in 2024 with the addition of
new elements and finishes. New finishes include Lepanto Red marble
for kitchen tops. For the panels, new finishes include Tuscan Brown steel,

every family member, from young children to adults.
Key elements include durable, easy-to-clean surfaces,
child-friendly features, ample storage and thoughtful
design details that enhance comfort and convenience for all ages.

KEY DESIGN ELEMENTS

Key design elements should be incorporated into a bathroom
to ensure it’s both stylish and safe for young children. Shazeen
Jooma, marketing director at Classic Luxury Tiles & Bathrooms,
recommends designing a bathroom that balances style and
safety for young children by opting for soft, neutral colours and
durable finishes. Key features, such as slip-resistant tiles, rounded
fixtures and lower vanities, ensure the space is child-friendly while
maintaining a chic aesthetic. “Using wall-mounted sanitaryware
can keep the floor space clear, offering a sleek look and an easy-to-
clean environment.”
Johan Van Wyk, managing director of On Tap, says a well-lit
room will help young children feel safe and confident within the
space. Natural light can also make the bathroom appear more
spacious and can be further enhanced with trendy lighting
fixtures to achieve a bright, inviting atmosphere.

adapted as children grow. Van Wyk believes built-in baths are ideal
for family bathrooms as they’re easier for small children to climb in
and out. He adds: “Water-efficient, temperature-controlled taps save
water and ensure safety while wall-hung toilets maximise floor space
and simplify cleaning – just a few factors to consider when choosing
sanitaryware for a family.”
Choose fixtures that can serve multiple purposes. Amadea
Oberholzer, executive consultant and designer at Lifestyle Ceramics,
recommends shower systems with multiple modes and accessories,
all geared towards making the shower experience as luxurious as
possible. “With the different modes, these showers can also be perfect
for children of different heights to adjust to suit their needs.”
Style and practicality can easily coexist, as demonstrated by the
Italtile Laufen Rimless Toilet. Nicole Russell, marketing manager of
Italtile Retail, states that this model combines sleek, international
design with a hygienic, easy-to-clean structure. Key features include
a dirt-resistant surface with no hidden niches, a powerful and
innovative flushing system, water-efficient dual-flush options (6/3L or
4.5/3L), and versatility. Its beautiful, ergonomic shape enhances both
functionality and style. >
