There are 6 existing plants which have a material
movement relationship with a new plant. The existing
plants have locations of (300,400), (500,800),
(1000,700), (900,200), (300,750) and (1200,500).
The number of tons of materials transported per year
from the new plant to various existing plants are 500,
900, 400, 900, 800 and 1600, respectively.
Determine the optimum location for the new plant
such that the distance moved in transporting the
materials to the existing facilities is minimized.

North-West corner method
A company has three plants A, B and C which supply a product to six
major distribution centres 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. The table below gives the
transportation costs per unit, the annual plant capacities and the
forecast of the demands at various centres.
Formulate a transportation model and thus determine how the products
should be supplied from the plants to the distribution centres as per
North-West corner method.

CRAFT Procedure
1. Inputs
1. Number of departments
2. Number of interchangeable departments
3. Initial layout
4. Cost matrix
5. Flow matrix
6. Area of departments
2. Compute centroids of departments in present layout
3. Form distance matrix using the centroids
4. Compute total handling cost of the present layout
5. Find all the pair wise interchanges of departments based
on ‘common border’ or ‘equal area’
9/20/2024 8:50:27 AM
CRAFT Procedure
6. Find the pair with minimum handling cost
7. Is the cost less than the total cost of present layout? If
yes, goto step 8. If not, goto step 11.
8. Interchange the selected pair of departments. Call this as
NEW LAYOUT. Compute centroids, distance matrix and
total cost.
9. Is the cost of new layout less than the cost of present
layout? If yes go to step 10. If not, go to step 11.
10. New layout is considered as PRESENT LAYOUT. Goto
step 5.
11. Print the present layout as FINAL LAYOUT
