TAUNTAUN RIDERS
PAINTING GUIDE BY SORASTRO
Hello! In this guide I’ll be painting the Tauntaun Riders from Star Wars: Legion.
I began by applying some basing paste I then primed the figures in black, fol- I decided to start by painting the eyes
and pieces of cork “rock” to the base lowed with some grey and white ze- of the Tauntauns using Nacar:
(notice I’ve left the firing arcs clear): nithal highlights applied from above:
I then mixed a dark brown using Brown Leather and Black for the iris/pupils:
I also did a little tidying up of the sur- Next I’m going to establish the main tones for the fur using Nacar for the areas of
rounding area with some grey: highlight, and Graphene Gray for the areas of shadow:
I’ve thinned the Graphene Gray down
I left the Nacar pretty thick however, as I’m then using a damp brush to wet
a bit, so it flows a little more into the
I want it to have pretty strong coverage: blend the tones on the model:
recesses:
I’m now working round the rest of the
Tauntaun in the same way:
For the face area I’m desaturating
(I’ll be applying some Contrast Colours over the top of the fur later on...)
some Gobi Brown with a little Graphite:
I’ve thinned this down a fair bit to
achieve some natural shading:
I’m now mixing some Gobi Brown in
And I’ve used this quite thinly for the
with the Black and Brown Leather mix And thicker for the claws:
horns:
we used for the eyes...
Next I’m going to use a 2:1 mix of Basil-
icanum Grey (2) and Wyldwood (1) for The Basilicanum Grey helps to thin out and desaturate the Wyldwood:
the leather straps:
This can also be used to push the depth
in the recesses of the horns:
I’m now creating a slightly lighter tone
And I’m using this for the bundles on
using an equal mix of Basilicanum Grey
the back:
and Skeleton Horde:
Here I’ve switched back to the darker And now back to the lighter tone for
I’ve also used it for these pouches:
tone for the belt and holster: the legs:
For the tan-coloured parts of the cloth-
ing I’m using Iroko mixed with a little
Graphite:
I’m now painting the skin tone using a mix of Golden Flesh and Pink Flesh (this may appear a little bright at the moment,
but I’ll be shading things down in a moment; you could use something like Cadian Fleshtone here too):
Here I’ve used Graphite for the fore- And I’m now just brightening the rim of
arms: the goggles with some Nacar:
And for the lenses of the goggles I’m I just applied a single layer of this be-
using Sap Green (pretty much any dark cause I quite liked the irregular cover-
green would be fine here): age:
I’m now once again using an equal
mix of Basilicanum Grey and Skeleton I’m then using this to shade the en-
Horde, but this time also thinned with tire upper body including the face (just
an equal measure of Contrast Medium avoiding the goggles):
(so a 1:1:1 ratio):
I’m now using an equal mix of Black
As usual we can soak up any unwant-
Templar and Gryph-Charger Grey for
ed excess pooling:
the blaster pistols:
And I’ve just noticed that one of the riders appears to have long hair trailing at the back, which I’ve chosen to paint black,
then highlighted with some blue-ish gray. So I’m just using a black and white grey scale, with a touch of Cantabric Blue
mixed in:
Next I’m going to shade the fur using a
mix of Basilicanum Grey, Gryph-Charg-
er Grey, and Contrast Medium:
I might thin the paint a little further for
the lightest areas like here on the top
of the tail:
I’m also using the shade we used for
the rider here on the Tauntaun’s face:
Once dry I’m applying some ultra-matte
Things are already looking pretty good,
varnish so I can get a better sense of
and you could absolutely stop here if
how things are looking (you could do
you like!
this just at the end if you like):
I’ve chosen to do a little further refin-
ing, starting with a few highlights for
the rider, initially using Nacar:
I’ve just noticed these straps on the
bundles, which I’m now painting with
the Basilicanum Grey and Wyldwood
mix we used earlier:
I’m now also adding some White Sands
to the Nacar for my brightest highlights:
We can also use the tan base colour to
add a few highlights to the top etc:
I’m now highlighting the skin with the addition of some Vanilla White, and a little
Primary Red for the nose area:
Elsewhere I’m just adding some White
I’ve also added some Vanilla White to
Sands to the base tones to push the
the Sap Green to place some reflective
values a little further. This includes the
highlights on the goggles:
tan clothing...
..as well as the face, horns, and claws
of the Tauntauns:
I’m now painting the ground with a dark
brown mix (most of this will soon be And I’m painting the rocks in gray:
covered in snow...):
For what it’s worth I’m also providing a light dry brush followed with some Shade (Agrax Earthshade):
For the snow effects I’m using the Pre-
And I’m now providing some grass cision Ice and Snow powder (some-
tufts: thing like Valhallan’s Blizzard would
also be fine for this):
I’m first thinning some Mod Podge with water and then using this to coat the base (Including the grass tufts):
I’m also adding a few touches of the
Mod Podge to the Tauntaun and rider
where I’d like bits of the snow to stick:
I’m then simply covering the model
with the powder - sifted from a decent
height:
After leaving to thouroughly dry, I’m now tapping/brushing the excess powder
away. (A damp brush can also be used here to wash away any unwanted pow-
der):
I’m now mixing some of the powder with some matte varnish, and I’m using this
to apply some additional touches of snow to the rider and Tauntaun:
I’m now painting the tongues which I
missed earlier using Pink Flesh dark-
ened with a little Black:
And finally, I’m mixing some Pink Flesh
I’ve also articualted some of the teeth into some grey, and using this to cre-
using Nacar: ate a pink-ish tint for the insides of the
ears:
And this completes the Tauntaun Rid-
ers!
