1. Let

𝑓(𝑥) = {
(1 − 𝑥)(𝑝𝑥 + 𝑞) 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≥ 0
If 𝑓(𝑥) satisfies the assumptions of Rolle's theorem in the interval [−1,1] then find the
values of 𝑝 and 𝑞.
2. If 𝑓: ℝ2 ⟶ ℝ is a function homogeneous in variables 𝑥 and 𝑦 of degree 𝑛, then prove

𝜕𝑥 𝜕𝑦
𝑦 𝑦
Hint: Take most general 𝑓 of the form: 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑥 𝑛 . ℎ (𝑥 ) 𝑜𝑟 𝑦 𝑛 . ℎ (𝑥 )
3. Suppose 𝑢(𝑥, 𝑦) is a function (not necessarily homogeneous) such that

4. Consider the function 𝑓: 𝐷 ⟶ ℝ defined as
𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = (𝑥 − 2)4 + (𝑦 − 1)4 where 𝐷 = {(𝑥, 𝑦) ∈ ℝ2 ∶ 𝑥 ≤ 𝑦, −𝑥 ≤ 𝑦}.
Are there any critical points for 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦)in 𝐷? Does there exist a boundary 𝑆 of 𝐷 on which
𝑓 attains its absolute minima? If yes, then investigate for the point 𝑃(𝑥0 , 𝑦0 ) of absolute
minima on 𝑆.
5. Let 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝛼𝑥 2 + 𝑥𝑦 + 𝛽𝑦 2 , 𝛼 ≠ 0, 𝛽 ≠ 0, 4𝛼𝛽 ≠ 1. Find the sufficient condition on
𝛼, 𝛽 such that
(a) (0,0) is a point of local maxima for 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦).
(b) (0,0) is a point of local minima for 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦).
(c) (0,0) is a saddle point for 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦).

6. Consider the function 𝑓: ℝ2 ⟶ ℝ defined as 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑥 + 𝑦. Divide the square shaped
region ℛ = {−1 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 1, −1 ≤ 𝑦 ≤ 1} into sub-regions ℛ1 and ℛ2 so that 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) has
opposite signs in these regions. Hence, find the value of the double integral
∫ ∫| 𝑥 + 𝑦| 𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑦
ℛ
7. Give the reason that motivates you to apply the technique of change of order of integration
in order to compute the double integral
1 1

𝐼 = ∫ ∫ 𝑦 4 𝑒 𝑥𝑦 𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑥
0 𝑥
Hence, find the value of 𝐼.
8. Let 𝑓 be a continuous real function. Use change of variables to prove that
1
∫ ∫ 𝑓(𝑥 − 𝑦)𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑦 = ∫ 𝑓(𝑢) 𝑑𝑢
𝐷 −1
2
where 𝐷 = {(𝑥, 𝑦) ∈ ℝ ∶ |𝑥| + |𝑦| ≤ 1}.
9. Find the value of the integral

𝑧=1 𝑦=0 𝑥=2𝑦 √𝑧
10. Dr. Dhar is a pure vegetarian and an environmentalist who stores some specific eatables
in the cuboidal paper box; but his pet dog Tok Tik destroyed it to the shape as shown below:
Deformed box
The six surfaces of the deformed box are defined by equations:
𝑥𝑦 = 4, 𝑥𝑦 = 16, 𝑦𝑧 = 1, 𝑦𝑧 = 4, 𝑧𝑥 = 25 and 𝑧𝑥 = 49
Can Dr. Dhar still find the volume of the box? If YES, then find the volume 𝒱 of the box.
