DIVIDING FRACTIONS
N-GEN MATH® 7

Division is the inverse operation of multiplication. When we divide two fractions we take
advantage of the fact that we can change this division into multiplication. We review this in the
first exercise.
4 2
Exercise #1: Consider the division problem  .
9 15
(a) Change this quotient into a product using (b) Check that your answer to (a) is correct by
what you learned from last year. Find the using another product.
final answer in simplest form.

DIVIDING TWO FRACTIONS

If and represent two fractions then .

Exercise #2: Find each of the following products in simplest form. Leave improper fractions.

(a)  (b)  (c) 
7 5 5 10 9 3

(d) 3 13  4 16 (e) 8 34  2 85

Given that all division can be written as fractions, we will sometimes encounter complex
fractions, which are fractions that contain fractions within their numerators and/or denominators.

Exercise #3: Simplify each of the following complex fractions by rewriting as a product and
evaluating. Write in simplest form and convert any improper fractions into mixed numbers.

(a) 3 (b) 6 (c) 35
5 5 7
6 12 8

Division of fractions has applications that are the same as division of whole numbers, although
they will likely be harder to think about.

of sugar.
(a) Write a division problem that shows how (b) Evaluate this quotient to determine the
many batches of hot cocoa Jayla can make number of batches.
with this much sugar.

(c) Check your answer from (b) using a product. Show the units of the product and the final units
of your answer.
