TASK 1: The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and
rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and
make comparisons where relevant.
MY ANSWER:
The chart illustrates the proportion of residents livliving e in their owned and
rented houses in England and Wales during the long periods of time from 1918 to
2011. Overall, the number of households in the owned
accommodation experienced an upward trend in the surveyed period and reached a
peak in 2001; meanwhile, the figure for people renting accommodation witnessed a

downward trend regardless of the highest starting point in 1918.

As can be seen in the chart, with just over 20% in 1918, the proportion of
families living in the owned accommodation increased slightly to over 30% in
1939 and then in 1953. After that, this figure began rising significantly from over
30% up to over 65% between 1953 and 1991 before reaching a peak at nearly 70%
in 2001. However, it first decreased to approximately 65% in 2011. In contrast,
with just over 75% in 1918, the rate of families living in the rented accommodation
went down by 8%, to almost 70% in 1939. In addition, this figure remained
stable in 1953 prior to falling considerably to roughly 32% and 31% in 1991 and
2001, respectively. Nevertheless, there was a sudden increase up to 36% of the
surveyed people in 2011.

TASK 2: Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices. To
what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion.
In today’s society, with the latest application of new technology, the people’s lives
are gradually enhancing; hence, it leads to the changes of people’s mind about
choices. There is a widely held view among people that human beings have too
many a variety of choices these days. From my perspective, people have many
distinctive choices to fulfill their passion or career path recently.
On the one hand, the advent of technological achievements has paved the way for
everyone to fulfill their needs in terms of entertainment and life. Indeed, the
advance of technology helps us choose various forms of leisure activities. For
instance, apart from traditional methods, we can make use of the Internet,
which has fingers on the pulse to read the news, shopping online or build up
friendship with other people. Moreover, the changes in construction and furniture
also facilitate in choosing appropriate accommodations. To illustrate, types of
accommodation range from houses, flats or apartments to rented accommodations
and all of them can be well equipped with services of basic and excellent
amenities. On the other hand, family and society, in general, have open-
mindedness in a majority of matters in terms of career path. Firstly, in comparison
to the past, there were a myriad of things considered as norms. For instance, in the
eyes of our parents or ancestors, only men must bear responsibility for earning a
living as breadwinners, so there were numerous male-dominated occupations.
However, nowadays, not only do men work, but women also have a good job and
have autonomy in achieving their goals by themselves. Specifically, we must
not break the virtues of this viewpoint, but in the modern life, many people
can make decisions on their own about their career or even family structure in
place of adopting traditional opinions.
To sum up, with these ideas discussed above, from my viewpoint, individuals have
various choices to achieve their goals as well as fulfill their passion in their lives.
