STUDENT’S EDUCATIONAL PACKET
Subject: Trends, Network and Critical Thinking in the 21 st Century
Quarter 3 – Module 1
TOPIC: Definition of a Trend
Lesson 1: The process of identifying a trend

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW?

Fads and trends emerge everywhere. They occur in any given time and
context. How do they differ? How do they impact life?

The interplay between fads and trends issues a number of challenges

in the 21st century. It is imperative to gain a keen analysis on this. This
module will present the differences between a fad and a trend and how
anyone can spot, accept, or reject them.

After going through this module, you should be able to:

1. Define a trend (HUMSS_MCT12- Ia-b-1)
2. Differentiate a trend from a fad (HUMSS_MCT12-Ia-b-3);
3. Point out the elements that make up a trend (HUMSS_MCT12- Ia-b-4)
4. Describe the different characteristics of a trend (HUMSS_MCT12- Ia-b-5)
5. Explain the process on how to spot a trend (HUMSS_MCT12-Ia-b-2).

Trend
Trend is something that covers almost all of human activities such as
but not limited to politics, beliefs, economics, lifestyle, social life and the
like whether the individuals or groups of people are aware of it or not. It is
defined in various ways depending on the orientation of these individuals or
groups. In the fields of arts, fashion and music for example, it is a prevailing
style or preference such as realism movement in art, emergence of the
miniskirt, and popularity of certain genre of music like jazz, classical and
rock. Many of you must have had an experience of listening or watching
Video-Karaoke singers during festivities or celebrations. You would notice
that song selections are dependent of the singers. Older singers tend to opt
for older songs while younger singers opt for newer songs. Why do you
think so? Well, it is because their song selection was dependent on the most
prevailing genre of songs during their respective era or generation. The
trend toward portable music players, is another example which started with
the invention of big, heavy, portable “boom boxes” and transformed into
personal CD players– continuing to grow and change into the MP3 portable
music player phenomenon that we see today. In the sphere of economics,
trends may come as a general movement registering statistical changes for
a long period such as the increasing cost of living and rate of
unemployment. A typical example of this is the long prevailing capitalistic
mentality of people all throughout the world which in one way or another
dictates their economic movement. Why do you still pursue your studies
despite the difficulties brought about by the current pandemic? Well, most
of you if not all would say, “because I have a dream to fulfill. I want a good
life, a good and stable job, a career, etc.”

In politics, trends refer to a tendency, drift, or bend toward a certain

stance, thought, or policy as when democratic Southeast Asian countries
favored authoritarian governments at a certain point in their histories. Well,
this will also remind us of our own history when there was a point in our
time when people felt that their freedom and liberty were disregarded which
brought them to a struggle to regain it – the 1986 Edsa People Power
Revolution, which eventually became a kindling reminder of how the true
spirit of democracy works. Other areas also exhibit prevailing preference
such as in sports (wearable devices that monitor training performance),
food (rise of oatmeal products, inclusion of moringa or malunggay in food
products), medicine (stem cell treatment), cosmetics (whitening
supplements), travel (paperless tickets and online check-in), manufacturing
(3-D printing), environmental management (home solar electric system). To
sum up, a trend is a pattern of behavior demonstrated by a big number of
people within a particular period.

Here are some examples of trend

• gadgets
• teleserye
• social networking sites
• social advocacies
• drone technology
• denim jeans
• business process outsourcing
• online ticketing
• cashless transaction

Lesson 2: Fads Vs. Trends
The 21st century is a deluge of overwhelming demands from a digital
society; hence, enormous trends have emerged. Global trends have been
increasingly given attention and anchored to socio-cultural, economic, and
political dimensions. Unconsciously, individuals like you do not realize that
they have been into certain trends.

Directions: Answer the following questions. Write your answers on a

separate sheet of paper.
1. Are you fond of watching Korean Pop Artists or Korean Dramas? Why?
Why not?
2. Have you done a hip-hop? Rap?
3. Have you tried creating TikTok videos? Why? Why not?
4. Do you have electronic gadgets? Name them.
5. Who influenced your fashion, style and interest?
6. Why do you think these have become part of your
lifestyle/culture/standards?

Fad
Trending ngayon sa YouTube ang… Trending sa Twitter ang… Trending
ngayon sa Facebook ang… You might get confused at these headlines from
the News and ask, “how can these be considered as trends based on the
above discussion?” This part now discusses fads and how it differs from
trends.
A Fad is something, such as an interest or fashion, that is very popular
for a short time (Merriam– Webster’s Learner’s Dictionary). A fad is a
product that has little, if any, utility but is characterized by a quick rise in
sales and popularity followed by a quick decline in sales and popularity. This
quick up and down in sales is because fad products usually do not satisfy a
strong consumer need. Nevertheless, fads seldom completely die out with
some diehard followers remaining loyal. Now, if we will look back at the first
paragraph above, you will now see that those things which are advertised as
“trending” in YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or any popular social
media platforms are not actually trends but are merely fads.

Here are some classic examples of fad.

• hula hoop
• yo-yo
• virtual pets
• Frisbee
• Pokémon Go
• Hello Kitty
• Loomband
• Candy Crush App
• iPod
• kalyeserye
• pet rock
• Friendster
• troll doll
• bucket challenge
• mannequin challenge
• “Gangnam Style” song
• Tamagochi pets
• hoverboards
• fidget spinner

A fad is an intense but short-lived fashion. It is a widely– shared enthusiasm

for something, especially one that is short-lived. It is a temporary fashion, a
craze, interest, or activity that people follow enthusiastically, but lasts for a
short period of time.
The table below summarizes the distinction between a fad and a trend
according to Arzadon et.al. (2018).

How does a trend differ from a fad? To simply put it, a fad has a definite
beginning and a definite end while a trend though has a certain beginning at
a certain point in time or history but, it evolves and changes as it continues
to grow. Every generation has its own set of fads. Do you now realize what
are those?
Can you now
recall
some
stories
of what
fads came
and went
during
your time? It
will surely
yield a very

interesting list.
Now that you have understood the difference between fads and trends, I think you
are ready for a more interesting journey towards a new lesson which is spotting a
trend! Ready? Let’s go!
Spotting a Trend
Someone or something starts or causes a trend. A person who
starts a trend is called trendsetter. The individual’s act or the event
has attracted attention, earned acceptance, and created strong
interest and influence on people whose number keeps increasing as days go
by. The act or event is something different from what is currently going on
and it becomes “the next big thing”. It demonstrates an accelerated spread
among various sectors and areas and creates a deep and wide scope of
influence on people, sectors, and the environment. It leads to change.
(Urgel, 2017)
Let us put it this way, in 1986, the Philippines became very popular to
the world because of the Edsa People Power Revolution which, as described
by historians, a perfect example of a successful peaceful revolution.
However, if we will still go a few more decades back, similar peaceful
revolution has also become very popular in India by the leadership of
Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi which eventually brought India’s
independence in 1947. What could have been that trend which developed
and evolved overtime? Well, obviously those are freedom and democracy in
which we may consider Gandhi as the trendsetter in India, while the 1986
Edsa People Power may be attributed to the assassination of the late
Benigno Aquino Jr.
According to futurists (a futurist is one who studies and predicts the
future, especially based on current trends.) Rehn and Lindkvist
(2013),trendspotter is a person who notices and reports on new fashions, ideas,
or activities that are becoming a popular, trendspotting refers to the study of
trends and the way they develop and affect society. According to them, this
should be differentiated from cool- hunting which is a hunt for those things that
will become popular before they are popular. Trend analysis is based on
trendspotting but it extends this into developing future scenarios and so
they say that to follow a trend, one must not only be conscious of what is
currently happening but be wise enough to predict the future. (Urgel, 2017)
Arzadon et.al. (2018) mentioned that trends and fads are sometimes
used interchangeably, and they are both important for organizations and
people to keep abreast with the changing environment. However, it is also
important to distinguish the difference between trends and fads to deepen
our understanding of survival and adaptability. As members of society, we
should know how fads and trends to create changes in our society. Certain
fads and trends are created by dominant cultures catering to their own
interests. As students, you should be able to analyze how to respond to the
issues and challenges brought about by these changes.

John was a 4th year student of Philosophy at the University of San Carlos in
Cebu City. One day, as he was about to go to the university, he came across
a young boy playing a yo-yo. As he further looked around, he saw few more
kids playing the toy and several street vendors nearby selling them. He was
wondering that maybe that toy was at its 1.___________ times since it won’t
last anyway, and, he was right. In fact, in just a few weeks’ time, it faded.
While John was in his class on Modern Philosophy, his professor was

the latter’s communist ideologies. This made Karl Marx a 2.____________ since
he started a trend which remained existing and evolving event to the

Not only that, he will also act as a 4.____________ since he will try to study the
development and possible evolution of Marxism in the world to come. Such a
great task isn’t it? Although it is going to be a very tedious task for John to
do, he believed that he would be able to learn so much about it. Anyway,
this is what 5.____________ are, they may have been developed at some point

Discussion
When you see cumulonimbus clouds suddenly formed within
the horizon, you would probably guess that a rain or thunderstorm is
imminent. When rain comes moments later, surely you would exclaim that
you were right about your guess. You were able to spot an incoming rain.
That was about spotting an incoming rain, but, how about a trend? Can you
spot a trend? In the previous module, you were introduced to the
descriptions, definitions and distinctions between a trend and a fad. In this
module, you will learn to spot the elements of a trend, and what
characterizes it from microtrends and macrotrends at one end to
megatrends and gigatrends at the other. What starts as barely perceptible
oscillations in our immediate environment may become the great
movements of history. The trick is to spot which ones will develop and how
far it will last. Some people like to categorize trends and a good place for

What is It

What makes a trend a trend? In the previous module, you have learned
the distinction between a fad and a trend. A trend is a pattern of behavior
demonstrated by a big number of people within a particular period and that
which continuously grow and evolve overtime while a fad is an intense but
short-lived fashion. With this distinction, we can therefore identify the
elements which comprise a trend. In this regard, Urgel (2017) enumerated
the following elements and characteristics of a trend:

Elements of a Trend
1. Number of participants pertains to people who follow a certain trend
which is started by an individual or a group of people. The group then
grows into a community, and eventually swells into national and
international societies. For example, the prevailing fashion of a period,
follows what celebrities are wearing or what fashion designers offer.
People often copy the trendsetters and so a new fashion trend develops.
In the recent century, styles of clothing are usually distinguished by
decades. One example of this is denim jeans that became a casual wear
by all genders on a regular basis. Jeans are especially perfect for crafting
swoon-worthy ensembles mostly due to the fact that they work well with
just about anything especially when it comes to different looks (Griswold
and Maguire 2020).

2. Pattern of behavior refers to a trend that is formed from repetitive actions of

people. For example, the simple act of taking a selfie has now become a
cultural trend. It is almost impossible not to see someone taking a selfie
in any place - be it in a tourist spot, in a restaurant, in a hotel lobby,
beside a movie poster in a cinema, in a concert hall, and at an event,
among others. Before smartphones and portable digital cameras, pictures
or portraits were taken by another person. The selfie phenomenon
enabled people to construct themselves visually and present it to the
public by putting it on social media. Others view the taking of selfies with
disdain as a symbol of narcissism and superficiality, while others consider
it as an act of self-exploration and a gauge for acceptance.
Taking groufies has been prevalent that everyone is into it, too.

3. Long period of time is one of the crucial elements of a trend which means that
a trend has to have a long-time frame, sometime running for decades. A
trend may experience some ups and downs in popularity, may fade away,
and may recur. A good example of this element of trend is the telephone.
It is a communication instrument that revolutionized modern living and
created various social impacts. It was soon overtaken by the popularity of
mobile phones in the late 1990s that have text messaging feature. Then
newer technologies allowed smartphones to include many applications
and internet connectivity. Although telephones are still present in homes
and offices, smartphones clearly have gotten ahead in functionality and
usage.

The picture shows the evolution of cellphones over the years.

4. Cause refers to the starting point

of a trend which can be an idea, a technology, an event or a person. All
trends have beginnings and someone or somebody definitely started it.
The question here is, how did it start? Now, this becomes quite obvious
as all material elements of a culture started with one’s ideas, therefore, it
is also conclusive that one starting point of a trend was an idea. Someone
or somebody thought about it in the first place. Let us go back to the
evolution of telephone mentioned above. If you will try to think about it,
it was Alexander Graham Bell who first invented and engineered the very
first telephone back in 1876 (https://www.britannica.com). What do you
think prompted him to such an endeavor? Well, if you guessed that it
began with an idea of bridging the gap of a long – distance relations
though live voice communication then you must be right. So, besides the
snail mails which were already prevalent those times, people had another
option – the telephone. Fast forward a bit, back in the late 1990’s, these
messages through mails or letters evolved and entered the
digital world through beepers while telephones also evolved
into cellular mobile phones. At present, all those separate
features plus some more were combined into the devices we
presently called “smartphones.” Believe it or not, all of
these were one’s ideas which eventually turned into a
reality.

The Walkman revolutionized music playing. Portable audio players

today can trace back their roots to the Walkman.
5. Consequence refers to the considerable impact or influence of a
trend. Social networking has become an encompassing trend that
tends to influence behaviors of online users. With the popularity
of smartphones, users began subscribing to various social
networking portals which enable them to post activity statuses
and photos, and even connect with celebrities. Currently, these
social media platforms and their messaging and video
conferencing features are finding their relevance today especially
for the students and teachers. For example, due to the pandemic,
teachers, students and parents use these features for the virtual
teaching and learning process. However, this trend can also
create a rather negative consequence among its followers. One
example is depicted on the illustration below. Quality time among
family members to share one another’s presence is being diverted

to other less relevant concerns brought about by the social media.

They can literally be described as “near yet so far” which means
that they may be physically near each other, in fact, sharing food
on the same table, yet their attention is far from the family
moment.

Lesson 4: Characteristics of Trends

Trends are difficult to study and analyze. Studying them is like

predicting the future and determining what changes may possibly
last and thus have wide effects on society and the people. Just like
predicting an incoming rain or storm, it is quite difficult to measure
its impending aftermath. It may yield a good outcome for the farmers
especially when they are in great need of water for their crops, but
at the same time it can also yield damages to other areas.
Rehn and Lindkvist (2013) mentioned a so-called hierarchy of
trends, which explains why trends seem to have varying reach,
effects, and influences on people. This hierarchy is a
representation of the scale of the development of a trend. To
better explain this, here is the tabular representation of these
characteristics with some examples.

Besides the above example, trends can also refer to movements,
ideologies, concepts, beliefs, and more. The important thing in studying
trends is to observe them closely for subtle and sudden shifts that
ultimately affect people, cultures, and societies in general. In the next

Lesson Explain strategic analysis and intuitive

1 thinking

Let Us Study
Whenever people are faced with different kinds of problems, it
is very crucial to think of means of addressing them and preventing
those circumstances from happening again. But solutions are greatly
influenced by the manner in which one defines the problem and
adopts a solution based on his/her own understanding. There are
basically two different perspectives in addressing the problem.
Analytical thinking is a kind of logical thinking that addresses
the problems or issues by breaking it into its component parts. It
uses scientific methods of research and adopts frameworks or
models to solve the problems. Managers, especially those running
big companies or projects, tend to use this thinking strategy to
pursue changes in directing plans and goals.
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

Analytical thinking focuses and deals with concerns at a

particular time. It also contains time, is deconstructive, but is
subject to disorientation, brain-centered and tends to the abstract. It
is considered efficient in the following conditions: sufficient time,
relatively static conditions, a clear differentiation between the
observer and the observed. It is best suited for dealing with
complexities, and works best where there are established criteria for
analysis (for example, rules of law). It requires an explanation, seeks
the best option, and can be taught in classroom to beginning.
Intuitive thinking is the kind of thinking that helps one
understand reality by perception or intuition without logic or
analysis. It derived its confidence from experiences. There are no
analytical steps or methods but based its action from observed
indicators in the organizational environment. It allows individual to
develop his own mode of solution in addressing strategic issues.
Intuitive approaches are personal and custom-made. It some-times
derived a problem-based solution that is not quite easy to share and
at times too difficult to copy or adapt. Managers utilized the power
of persuasion to get people agree rather than the logical sense of
coming up with an action.

Intuition works best where the observer has the same

experience in the particular situation. It is difficult to teach in the
classroom, has the tendency to work on feelings in favor of a more
workable solution. Intuition is experience translated by expertise to
produce rapid action.

Charles Parselle, founding partner of Centers for Excellence in Dispute

Resolution - CEDRS.COM , presented his comparison of the
components of Analytical and Intuitive thinking.

Let Us Study
Everyday we make choices in our lives. Sometimes
our decisions are based on impulses that we need to face
along with the unfavorable consequences of our actions. We
cannot afford to commit the same mistakes at all times. This is
why there are institutions that create strategic analysis at
least intuitive thinking, if the latter makes sense.
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

According to Urgel, E. (2017), Strategic analysis is the

process of examining the organization’s surroundings and
resources to better formulate a strategy to meet the desired
objectives and improved the organization’s performance. It is
the understanding of an organization’s external and internal
environments. It also deals with the creation and better
utilization of resources in the pursuit of their objectives and
priorities. Such understanding is drawn from the facts data,
and instructions at hand.
Strategic analysis, for example, can be done by an
organization to analyze its losing performance. It is based on
data and information about the internal profile of its
employees and their capabilities and work attitudes. It can be
done by the organization to investigate the external profile of
its surrounding, opportunities, and possible rivals. Moreover,
intuitive thinking is sensing or knowing without using rational
processes such as reading facts and instructions. According to
the dictionary, intuition is something that is known or
understood without proof or evidence. In short,
intuitive is making choices and decisions according to
one’s hunch and gut feeling without knowing the reason why.
Good intuition results from long years of knowledge and
experience which enable you to comprehend how people think,
act, and react, perceive and interpret, and interact with one
another.
A critical mind or analytical mind usually exercises
strategic thinking. Samantha Howland (2015) identified six
elements of strategic thinking designed to encourage strategic
leadership among today’s executives. It is drawn from a study
of more than 20,000 executives in more than 175 countries.
The six key elements are abilities to anticipate, challenge,
decide, interpret, learn, and align.
1. The ability to anticipate enables the executives to not only
focus on the current situation but also to look at the future.
They should monitor the environment to foresee significant
changes in the industry to prepare them for possible
threats as well as opportunities. For instance, an executive
who keeps abreast with trends and engages in
trendspotting is more likely to be open to product changes
or to beef up the company’s product strength in
anticipation of trend. An example is when a garment
executive spots a consumer preference for plaid print, he or
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

she gradually reduces the production of apparels with floral

design and shifts to plaid print.
2. The ability to challenge involves raising questions instead
of merely accepting information as it comes. The purpose of
raising questions is to trace the root causes of problems, to
challenge existing beliefs, and to find out biases and
possible manipulation of the situation. Probing and
investigation may also be employed.
3. The ability to interpret is shown by testing a variety of
hypotheses as well as comparing and contrasting certain
data prior to making decisions on particular issues. The
executive avoids jumping into conclusions without sound
basis.
4. The ability to decide enables to executive to make a stand
with courage and conviction despite incomplete information
at hand. The executive combines speed and quality in doing
this for them to avoid indecision or “analysis paralysis
which prevent a leader from acting fast, thereby missing
chances of opportunities.
5. The ability to align enables the executive to have different
divergent viewpoints, opinions, and agenda to attain
common goals and to pursue mutual interests. Open
communication and dialogue will help address the problem
of misalignment and build trust leading to consensus and
agreements.
6. The ability to learn is demonstrated by an executive who
accepts feedback, constructive criticism, and even failure
which are altogether viewed as source of critical and
valuable insights. He or she shows willingness to
immediately return to the right course when going off tract.
Failures are considered lessons for success.

Strategic analysis is useful not only to an organization

but also to an individual such as student like you. Your current
situation in striving to finish senior high school can be
assessed by the following: (a) knowing your strengths such as
your competencies and values, weaknesses such as negative
attitude and needs to be filled, (b) threats such as events and
situations that prevent you from focusing on your studies, and
other factors that can help you improve your skills.
Are you failing or getting poor grades? What good habits
can you develop to address this problem? Whom can you
approach to help you improve your grades? Strategic analysis
can be a way to turn your weakness into strengths and to take
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

advantage of situations that will boost your confidence as a

student. It will guide you in staying on course toward finishing
senior high school.
The honing and nurturing of a critical mind or strategic
thinking must start at an early age. Students like you should
be provided with opportunities to develop this ability for self-
improvement. It can also guide you in giving service to others
(for example as an officer in the student council). In such case,
the students develop strategic thinking which is reflected in
his or her abilities to anticipate, decide, challenge, learn,
align, and interpret.

4 key qualities of strategic thinkers

Bring to your mind a professional leader you admire. Have you

chosen them because of their innovation, intelligence or ability to
engage audiences? Or maybe you like their capacity to critique
process and procedure while still being receptive to feedback and
change? If your model leader possesses any of the above qualities,
they’re a strategic thinker. Here are four qualities that all strategic
thinkers possess, and continue to work on throughout their lives:

1. They’re always learning

Strategic thinking skills are developed by committing to constant
learning and self-improvement. Whether it’s learning from their
own experiences, the experiences of others, books, presentations,
networks, conferences or junior colleagues, strategic thinkers
don’t dismiss any potential sources of education.
2. They always seek advice from others
In the spirit of being able to prepare for the future and make
constant improvements, strategic thinkers’ welcome feedback and
advice from others. They test ideas and concepts and ensure that
criticisms are examined and incorporated where relevant. This
process makes their plans and strategies as robust and steadfast
as possible.
3. They’re not afraid to take risks
Great strategic thinkers understand that professional excellence
doesn’t always emerge from a cookie-cutter approach. After
careful consideration, they take risks on new ideas, innovative
solutions and unique pitches, prepared for both success and
failure, and always willing to learn from their mistakes.
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

4. They never forget organizational purpose

Whether a business builds intuitive websites for clients or sells
diverse share portfolios, strategic thinkers will never neglect
their purpose or people. If the strategic thinking and planning
doesn’t revolve around these two key elements, it has failed to
be strategic at all.

Intuitive thinking involves a more spontaneous, instinctive,

and unplanned process of solving a problem. Evaluation
of the situation and the perceived alternative course of action
are quick and board. Actions and decisions spring from
hunches and gut feeling based on unpremeditated ideas or
experiences rather from facts and hard data. This type of
thinking tends to be imaginative and more applicable in
situations where facts are insufficient and previous related
decisions are not readily available.
Intuitive thinkers do certain things which other do not. Carolyn
Gregorie (2014), senior writer of The Huffington Post provided
the Ten Things Highly Intuitive People Do Differently. The
following activities are as follows:
(1)Listening to an inner voice. They pay attention to intuition and
allow it to guide them.
(2)Taking time to be alone and to reflect. Spending time in solitude is
their way of engaging in deeper thoughts and creative
thinking. It is also called “mindfulness” which means
looking into one’s current experience without making
judgement.
(3)Listening to their bodies. They tune in to their bodies for gut
feeling and physical sensation or emotion associated with
intuition.
(4)Observing everything. They take note of the occurrence of odd
things and keep an eye on the frequency of coincidences,
unexpected connections, and instantaneous decisions or
actions done.
(5)Paying attention to their dreams. It refers to the way of getting in
touch with their “unconscious thinking process” and of
capturing information on how to live their lives.
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

(6)Connecting deeply with others and staying in a positive mood. They can read
a person’s mind through his or her words, feelings, and
actions. Avoiding negative emotions helps boost their
intuitive judgement.

Analytical thinking applied in strategic analysis is brain-

centered and focused. It deals with one thing and is concerned
with time. It is linear and inclined toward the abstract. It
efficiently works in a condition with sufficient time, relative
stability, and established criteria for analysis such as rules. It
comes in handy when an explanation is needed. The process
can be taught and learned in the classroom.
Intuitive thinking, on the other hand, possesses
characteristics which mostly run in contrast to analytical
thinking. It is heart-centered, unfocused, and is not time-
bound. It views many things simultaneously, is nonlinear, and
is inclined toward the concrete and the real. It efficiently
works in dynamic conditions, under time pressure, and is
instantaneous. It works well when the observer has gained
experience in a particular situation and he is ready to act on
hunches and feeling, especially when an explanation is not
needed.
According to science, intuitive thinking happens in a
region of our brain close to the pineal gland. In other words, it
lines up with the middle of your forehead, between your
eyebrows. You can’t use intuitive thinking whenever you want,
though. It only shows up in “moments of inspiration”. Plus, it
really works. It’s what some people call doctors’ “clinical eye”
or being a “visionary”.

The following are some well-known people of intuition

✓ Albert Einstein (Theoretical physicist who is widely considered one of the
greatest physicists of all time; best known for the theory of relativity, Nobel
prize in Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect and” for his
services to Theoretical Physics”):
• The only real valuable thing is intuition.
• There is no logical way to the discovery of these
elemental laws. There is only one way of intuition,
which is helped by a feeling for the order lying behind
the appearance.
✓ Alexis Carrel (French surgeon, biologist, and eugenicist; Nobel prize in
Physiology or Medicine):
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

• All great men are gifted with intuition. They know

without reasoning or analysis what they need to know.
• Intuition comes very close to clairvoyance; it appears
to be the extrasensory perception of reality.
✓ Lao Tzu (ancient Chinese philosopher):
• The power of intuitive understanding will protect you
from harm until the end of your days.
✓ Anne Wilsom Schaef (writer and lecturer):
• Trusting our intuition often saves us from disaster

The 4 Types of Intuitive Thinking

1. Emotional intuitive thinking. This has to do with your ability to
immediately pick up on other people’s personality traits or
emotional states. You can see who they are, or how they are,
without them having to say anything.
2. Mental intuitive thinking. This is about finding an immediate answer
to a problem, without analyzing it. It’s very common in people
with jobs that require quick decisions, like firefighters or
bomb technicians.
3. Psychic intuitive thinking. This means having the ability to choose
the best path to overcome a personal difficulty, without
putting much mental effort into it. It also means being able to
pick up on social and work-related dynamics.
4. Spiritual intuitive thinking. This has to do with states of
enlightenment” or “revelations”. They’re more of an
experience than a fact. Buddhists talk about this kind of
intuition more than anyone else, which has given it a mystical
quality.

on Labor Migration

The Philippines has been publicized as a global model for labor

export. In some international gatherings, Philippine officials have
been lauded for their ways of handling of the country’s labor-export
program. Officials of labor-exporting countries have even asked the
Philippine government officials to give them pointers in managing and
developing their labor-export programs.
With some 8.7 million migrants, overseas Filipino workers
(OFWs), and undocumented worker overseas who remit more than 12
billion dollars each year, the Philippines has a number of laws in place
and agencies mandated to the serve the needs of its overseas workers
and their families. Several international instruments to promote
migrants’ rights have also been put in effect the past decade.
In many cases, however, Filipino migrants still find themselves in
vulnerable situations and unable to realize their rights guaranteed by
national and international instruments.
Do the Philippines live up to its image as a model for overseas
labor export? Do its laws and agencies really serve the needs of
Filipino overseas workers and their families? Has the country been
able to draw on international instruments in promoting the rights of
Filipinos abroad?
This document seeks to lay bare the concept of a “global model”
by presenting current Philippine and global realities. It deals on how
these affect and influence labor outmigration in the country. It will
further examine the Philippine labor migration policies, not merely in
theory but also in terms of realities on the ground.
Based on the facts, readers can either remains convinced that
the Philippines really is a “model” that should be emulated, or they
can turn into critics of the current labor export program.

Climate Change

Let Us Study

Weather tells the environmental condition in a specific place. It

can be rainy, sunny, windy or snowy while Climate describes the weather
conditions expected in a particular place in a specific time of the year.
Climate change refers to the significant change in the average
conditions of temperature and rainfall in a particular region over a long
period of time. An amazing scientific accord highlighted that global climate
change is due primarily to the human use of fossil fuels that releases
dioxide and alternative greenhouse gases into the air. The gases trap heat
inside the atmosphere, which may have a variety of effects on ecosystems.
the results square measure the following; (a) rising ocean levels, (b) severe
weather events, and (d) droughts that render landscapes additional
vulnerable to wildfires.
It is already happening in our planet even before it is inhabited by
humans but scientists have observed that changes nowadays are too
unusual, making them more alarmed. For over 20,000 years, much of the
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

European regions were covered with glaciers. Today, climate all over Europe
is quite warmer compared to its condition 20,000 years ago. Globally,
warming temperatures and changes in precipitation are observed. The
results of all these climatic changes include:
A. sea levels rising,
B. fewer mountain glaciers,
C. faster melting of the ice in Greenland, Antarctica and the Arctic, and
D. changes in flower and plant blooming times.
A lot of factors are contributory to the global climate change but
scientists have agreed that human activities have been the biggest
contributor to such change. Burning fuel in factories, cars and buses affects
the earth’s natural greenhouse. The heat of the planet is trapped in the
atmosphere making the Earth warmer. This phenomenon is called the
greenhouse effect.
Both production and consumption of goods contribute to global
warming. Production as in manufacturing utilizes technology that emits
large amount of carbon in the atmosphere. Distribution of goods such as
shipping and storage in warehouses and distribution centers also produces
hydrofluorocarbons that contribute to the greenhouse effect. Consumption
produces wastes especially non–biodegradable one that pollutes the
atmosphere when disposed through burning which also releases carbons.
The food consumption and production have a major impact on the
surroundings. The means we have a tendency to consume has each direct
and indirect impact on the surroundings. An example of this consumption is
that the uses of energy in our homes like television radio, computer, cars
and public utility jeepney that emit harmful gasses and caused pollution
and increased emissions of greenhouse gases that results in global climate
change.
Consumption conjointly vie an indirect impact towards our
surroundings from the assembly, process and transportation of the
products that we have a tendency to consume daily. Examples of this
production of goods we consume are the can goods, soft drinks, processed
foods, shampoo and many more..
In association, with consumption and production pattern within the
Philippines, the state of surroundings in our country along with the
emissions of greenhouse gasses, indicators on pollution and also the
generation of material discovered that each one indicators show
environmental degradation all told the domains being assessed (Sta.
Romana, 2017).

Disadvantages
A. Failing economy will have a domino effect on its trading partner in
another counter. This is evident among the European Union in which
bail-out was made to save an economically failing nation.
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

B. Wealth and power are concentrated in the hands of small group of

corporate elite putting smaller competitors in disadvantageous
situation resulting to weakening of their business capability that
usually ends up selling their business to bigger companies.
C. Introduction of international products and brand makes way for
business domination of bigger and developed countries making the
cultural exchange one-sided in favor of those who dominate the
market.

Six Ways Climate Change Will Affect PH Cities

El Niño, sea level rise, ocean acidification are just some scenarios PH cities
face due to climate change.
Manila, Philippines – Climate change is happening now and it is
happening, not in far-flung corners of the world, but in human
communities.
Scientists say human activities are largely responsible for the continued
increase in average global temperatures, which causes climate change.
Global greenhouse gases emitted by the fossil fuel industry (which gives
us electricity and fuels our cars) trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere
thus warming the entire planet.
Philippine cities will likely to experience at least one of these effects of
climate change:

1. More intense El Niño

The El Niño phenomenon occurs when the surface of ocean waters on
the southern Pacific becomes abnormally warm. The energy created by
this warming is so great that it can create an imbalance in the weather
in different parts of the world. In Southeast Asia, it can lead to
abnormally dry conditions.
El Niño can also make other weather events like storms highly
unpredictable. Weather will have extreme highs and lows, making it
“increasingly difficult to accurately predict weather patterns for
purposes of planning and normal business operations,” says a WWF-
Philippines study.

2. Sea surface temperatures to rise

By the end of the century, sea surface temperatures are expected to
rise by 1 to 4 degrees Celsius. This can lead to more powerful storms
because storms get their strength from heat rising from the sea.
In the Philippines, 4 and 5 degrees Celsius spike above the normal sea
surface temperature have been recorded. Warmer seas kill coral reefs
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

and can thus lead to a decline in fish catch, putting food security in
danger.
3. Ocean acidification
The shift in the pH levels of our oceans can lead to widespread coral
reef death. Because of the imbalance, shrimps are not able to develop
skins, oyster cannot develop shells. Fish larvae may not be able to
develop bones. This further endangers food security and the livelihood
of fishermen.
4. Sea levels to rise by 4 to 6 meters
Current data show an increase in sea surface heights. Scientists say this
is due to the melting of ice sheets in northern portions of the globe like
Antarctica and Greenland. Sea level rise by 4 to 6 meters can submerge
low-lying communities like Tacloban City which stands 3 meters above
sea level.
5. Tropical cyclones to intensify
The creation of tropical cyclones is already being recorded in areas
where the phenomenon had never been observed. On Nov. 8, 2013,
Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), said to be the strongest storm in
recorded history, devastated cities in the Visayas.
6. Rainfall, river flow, and flooding to intensify
Monsoon rainfall in the Philippines will reach new highs and lows. Some
parts of the country will experience an upward trend in rainfall while
other parts will experience an intensification of drought. These two
extreme poles of weather will make it more difficult for agriculture and
aquaculture sectors which are highly dependent on weather.
Philippine cities are already experiencing unprecedented amounts of
rainfall. In Tacloban City, rainfall increased by 257% from 1998 to 2011.
More rainfall will lead to more flooding and can trigger landslides in
upland communities.

Paskill (2018) suggested eight (8) simple ways to help care our
environment. In every little thing you make a difference.

1. Use Reusable luggage

If you're attending to mall for searching like grocery, food, and

garments you would like to apply the plastic luggage. Mistreatment
reusable luggage helps the atmosphere. Plastic grocery-type luggage that
get thrown out find yourself in landfills and it takes years to decompose.

2. Print as very little as Necessary

Using such a lot paper is damaging to the atmosphere. If possible

recycle the utilization writing paper for printing. If not, print on either side
of the page to scale back the number of paper used.

3. Recycle

Instead of throwing recyclables within the trash along with your

nonrecyclables, recycle the materials of fine use. create a degree to require
an additional step to separate reclaimable materials like cans, bottles,
plastic and papers.

4. Use a Reusable nutrient Containers

In most school, fruit juices is served mistreatment plastic cups, rather

than shopping for this cup of drinks on an individual basis, deliberate to
use a reusable bottle. Not solely can this facilitate the atmosphere it saves
your money for several of the campuses that provide water fountains
designed for drinking still as for replacement reusable water bottles.

5. Don’t Throw Your Notes Away

Keeping your notes can facilitate the scholars by having the ability to
scan what they're learning within the words of another student. If you can’t
notice anyone to convey the notes to, at the terribly least, recycle the
paper you used.

6. Save Electricity!

Use energy-efficient light-weight bulbs rather than regular bulbs. They

last longer, which can save your money. Make you turn off lights, the TV,
and other appliances when you are not using them.

7. Save Water

Water is wasted a lot frequently than we can see. Shut down the
faucet as you're brushing your teeth. Don’t turn your shower on till you’re
able to get in and wash your hair. Limit your water usage as you wash
dishes.
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

8. Avoid Taking Cars or Carpool as possible

Cars square measure harmful to the atmosphere. Taking public

transportation, walking, or riding a motorcycle are better options that help
the environment and your budget, as well as getting some exercise.

Madaan (2018) also suggested that there is a solution to each

problem, and suggested possible solutions to climate change namely:

1. Stop Cutting down Trees: Believe it or not, cutting down trees is the prime
reason of the climate change. Planting new trees can quickly scale back
the speed of the emission of gases.
2. Control Population: Yes, if the population is controlled, then climate change
can also be controlled. How? Putting in simpler words, more number of
individuals suggests that additional demand of resources like food and
shelter resulted in additional usage or utilization of the earth.
3. Less use of Fossil Fuels: The high discharges of the greenhouses gases are
diminishing the ozone layer which gives global warming. It is then one of
the major causes of climate change.
4. Unplug your Devices: In almost every house, there are at least a dozen of
appliances which includes air conditioner, television, microwave,
washing machine and others. These devices lead to global warming,
hence the climate change.
5. Focus on Renewable Energy: Fossil fuels are going to be finished in an
exceedingly few decades and it's time to maneuver towards the
renewable energy. In several elements of the globe, several cities are
using the energy from the renewable sources of energy which
incorporates wind, solar, tidal, ocean and many more.
6. Control of Methane Leaks: Surprisingly, methane is a more potent greenhouse
gas than carbon dioxide. Every month, there is a huge quantity of
methane leak from pipeline, storage tanks, other infrastructure,
garbage dumps and coal mines.
7. Tougher Emissions and Efficiency Standards: Most of the harmful gases are released
either by automobiles or power plants. Many countries have already put
strict rules in controlling the emissions.
8. Experimenting the Earth: There are many experiments being done on Earth
which might control climate change. Some ideas like, Geoengineering,
radical interventions to either block sunlight or reduce greenhouse gas
are probably the last options to control the climate change.
9. Upgrade in infrastructure: Buildings require cement and it is produced by
heating limestone giving rise to the carbon dioxide level. Upgrade in
infrastructure like, making the roads perfect, improving cement-making
processes and investing in new infrastructure or radically upgrading
existing highways and transmission lines would cut emission of
greenhouse gas and control climate change.
10.Personal Solutions to Global Warming: There are many steps which everyone can
take in order to control the climate change. A small step by anyone can
make a big difference.
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

Things to Remember!

Carbon emission from your home is directly correlated to everyday energy

consumption. One way to reduce your carbon footprint is to improve energy
efficiency:
Inside your home:

• When appliances are not in use, turn them off and unplug them. Even
small appliances like cell phone chargers waste energy when plugged
in all day. It is called ghost-electricity.
• Take shorter, cooler showers and turn off the tap when brushing your
teeth.
• Recycle everything you can.
• Replace incandescent light bulbs with CFL low energy bulbs, which use
just 20% of the energy of a normal light bulb and last 15 times longer.
• When replacing older appliances, always opt for appliances that use
less power and receive a good energy rating.
At your office:

• Only print as many copies as absolutely needed. Instead of having

each employee have their own files, create a central filing system to
avoid having to make many copies of the same documents.
• Use smaller fonts when printing internal documents to save paper and
ink.
• Recycle everything, including ink cartridges and toner. Ask local
suppliers if they can deliver supplies in reusable bins rather than
cardboard boxes.
• Turn off and unplug equipment when not in use.
• Telecommunicate whenever possible, but make a commitment to do it
at least one day per week.
For your meetings:
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

• Ask your caterer for biodegradable tableware (plates, cups, utensils,

etc.) or use china and metal silverware.
• Monitor meeting room temperatures. Turn the heat down a few
degrees in winter and up a few degrees in summer, and encourage
attendees to dress in layers.
• Make sure lights and AV equipment in session rooms are turned off
when not in use. Ask your AV provider to unplug equipment at night.
• Offer a carbon-offset donation on your registration form; Many
companies will plant trees for as little as 50 cents each.
• Provide materials that are ecofriendly: recyclable, printed on recycled
paper, or go paperless altogether.

Lesson Make a stand on how the consequences of one’s action

3 affect the lives of others and the environment

Let Us Study

There is broad-based agreement within the scientific community that

climate change is real. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration correspond that climate change is indeed
happening and is almost certainly due to human activity. The primary
reason behind climate change is the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and
coal, which emits greenhouse gases into the atmosphere— primarily carbon
dioxide. Other human activities, such as agriculture and deforestation, also
contribute to the production of greenhouse gases that cause climate
change.
Even small increases in Earth’s temperature caused by climate change
can have severe effects. The rising sea level due to the melting of the polar
ice caps is caused by climate change. The warming ocean temperatures are
associated with stronger and more frequent storms; additional rainfall,
particularly during severe weather events, leads to flooding and other
damage; an increase in the incidence and severity of wildfires threatens
habitats, homes, and lives; and heat waves contribute to human deaths and
other consequences.
Global warming causes change in climate patterns. The consumption
of paper leads to production of paper industries, the use of woods for
constructions of houses and turning forest to
residential/industrial/agricultural lands leads towards the destruction of
forests and killing of trees which resolves to reach highest heat index.
Overharvesting, deforestation, land degradation, and exploiting
nature for natural resources for human needs can leading toward having
limited resources in the future, it destroys animals’ natural habitats and
cause to global warming due to the devastating effects due human
demands.
The continuous development and manufacturing of plastics and rubber
products can destroy marine ecosystem and its natural habitat, which leads
to existence of invasive species that threatened other species and habitat
change. The more disruptions human can do, the more damaging effects it
creates, and the atmospheric balance that maintains the Earth’s climate
becomes unstable that leads to climate change.
lOMoARcPSD|43944869

The increasing release of carbon dioxide(CO2) by burning fossil fuels,

coal, oil, and gas as well as the greenhouse gases which includes water
vapor(H20), and smaller but constant emission of methane(CH4),
Chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs) and nitrous oxide(N20), which are trap in the
atmosphere create a Greenhouse Effect heat-trapping blanket that makes
the Earth warmer which changes the climate condition.

Combating Climate Change:

1. Adaptation

• Integrating the findings of researches into national decision-making,

planning and adaptation practices
• Knowledge sharing and technology transfer
• Helping to strengthen national capacity for adaptation planning using
knowledge, technology and policy support
2. Mitigation
