1 Derive the unsteady, 3-dimensional heat conduction equation with heat generation for
heat transfer through the isotopic and an-isotropic plane walls. From the general
equation, get the Poisson, Fourier and Laplace equations.
2 A large plane wall of thickness 0.5 m, thermal conductivity 1.5 W/m-K, and surface
area 20 m2. The two sides of the wall are maintained at constant temperatures of T1 =
150°C and T2 = 30°C, respectively.
Determine the following,
(i) A variation of temperature (Tx)within the wall and the value of temperature at x =
0.1, 0.2. 0.3 and 0.4.
(ii)The rate of heat conduction through the wall under steady conditions.
3 A pipe carrying steam of length 30 m, Inner radius 8 cm, outer radius 12 cm, and
thermal conductivity 50 W/m-K. The inner and outer surfaces of the pipe are
maintained at average temperatures of T1 = 120°C and T2 = 40°C, respectively.
(i) Obtain a general relation for the temperature distribution (Tr) inside the pipe
under steady-state conditions
(ii) Calculate temperature at r = 9 cm, 10 cm and 11 cm
(iii) Determine the rate of heat loss from the steam through the pipe.
4 A spherical container with an inner radius of 10 cm, outer radius of 15 cm, and thermal
conductivity of 50 W/m-K. The inner and outer surfaces of the container are
maintained at average temperatures of T1 = 250°C and T2 = 50°C, respectively,
because of some chemical reactions occurring inside.
(i) Obtain a general relation for the temperature distribution (Tr) inside the
shell under steady-state conditions and
(ii) Calculate temperature at r = 9 cm, 10 cm and 11 cm
(iii) Determine the rate of heat loss from the container.
5. The 0.5 m × 0.5 m vaccine storage cabin has an exterior made of steel sheet (2 mm, k
= 30 W/m-K). The fluid temperature and convective heat transfer coefficient at the
outer surface are 30°C and 25 W/m2-K, respectively. The storage cabin is constructed
of glass wool sandwiched between steel and plywood. Plywood makes up the interior
(20 mm, k = 0.06 W/m-K) with an interior temperature of -18°C and a convective heat
transfer coefficient of 15 W/m2-K. What would happen in terms of temperature drop
and heat transfer rate if glass wool thickness was doubled?
6. A furnace wall is made of three layers. The first layer is of insulation (k = 0.6 W/m-K), 12 cm
thick. Its face is exposed to gases at 870°C with a convection coefficient of 110 W/m 2.K. It is
covered with a 10 cm thick layer of fire brick (k = 0.8 W/m-K) with a contact resistance of 2.6
× 10–4 m2.K/W between the first and second layer. The third layer is a plate of 10 cm
thickness (k = 4 W/m. K) with a contact resistance between the second and third layer of 1.5
× 10–4 m2-K/W. The plate is exposed to air at 30°C with a convection coefficient of 15 W/m2-
K. Determine the heat flow rate and overall heat transfer coefficient.
7. A tube with 2 cm O.D. maintained at a uniform temperature of Ti is covered with insulation (k
= 0.20 W/m.K) to reduce heat loss to the ambient air at T∞ with ha = 15 W/m2K. find: (i) The
critical radius (rc )of insulation. (ii) The ratio of heat loss from the tube with insulation to that
without insulation, if the radius of insulation is equal to rc.
8. A rectangular copper bar 80 mm × 6 mm in cross-section (k = 370 W/m-K) is insulated at the
top, bottom and left faces. It is observed that when a current of 8000 A is passed through the
conductor, the bare face has a constant temperature of 50°C. If the resistivity of the copper is
2 × 10–8 Ωm, calculate,
(i) The maximum temperature in the bar and its location,
(ii) (ii) Temperature at the centre of the bar
9. A composite wall having three layers of thickness 0.3 m, 0.2 m and 0.1 m and with thermal
conductivities 0.6, 0.4 and 0.1 W/(m-K), respectively, is having surface area 1m2. If the inner
and outer surface temperatures of the composite wall are 1840 K and 340 K, respectively,
what is the rate of heat transfer and interface temperatures?
10. The hot combustion gases of a furnace are separated from the ambient air and it’s
surroundings, which are at 20°C, by a brick wall 0.20 m thick. The brick has a thermal
conductivity of 1.5 W/m-K and a surface emissivity of 0.75. Under steady state conditions, an
outer surface temperature of 200°C is measured. Free convection heat transfer to the air
adjoining the surface is characterised by a convection coefficient of 20 W/m2-K. (i) Find the
inner wall temperature (ii) What is the effect of heat transfer coefficient (h = 2 W/m2-K, 20
W/m2-K, 200 W/m2-K) and the outer surface temperature (Ts = 100°C, 200°C, 300°C) on the
heat transfer by radiation?
