SPACE VS PLACE
• Space is location, physical, and absolute concept. It is
abstract without any substantial meaning. It is open and
subjective area.
• Place is what gives a space ”meaning”, personality,
connection to a cultural or personal identity. It is
culturally ascribed meaning given to a space.
Example 1,
if we have to describe Sivakasi as a space,
Sivakasi is a town located in Virudhunagar district of
Tamilnadu. It has total area of 46.27 sq.km and elevated 127m
above sea level. It is at distance 74 Km fro Madurai. It
experiences hot and humid climate.
If we could describe Sivakasi as place,
Sivakasi is called as Little Japan, famous for beautiful fire
crackers. It is Land of Sound and Light. It is named after a deity
Shiva. It has many printing industries making printing for may
products such as Books, Clothing, Posters, bags etc. People
are friendlier and they enjoy Good food.
Example 2
If we could describe New Orleans as Space
New Orleans is a city located in the state of Louisiana in the
Southeast United States. It is on the coast of the Gulf of
Mexico. It is about 349.8 square miles, or about 910 square
kilometers, in size. It experiences a warm, humid climate
during most of the year
If we could describe New Orleans as Place,
Shaped by the influence of Native American, French, African-
American and Spanish cultures, New Orleans is the home of
jazz music and spicy Cajun cuisine. The spirit of New Orleans is
vibrant, joyful and resilient. It is known as a place where the
people are friendly, and the party never stops.
PROXEMICS
It is the study of physical distance and its influence on human
interactions. The amount of space existing between people
when communicating can reveal the nature of the relationship.

The study of space and how we use it, How it makes us feel(
More or less comfortable) and how we arrange ourselves in
relation to the objects and space.
The term “ PROXEMICS” was coined by Edward Hall, who
was an anthropologist. He was interested in understanding
how humans place themselves in terms of space.
He defined proxemics as “the spatial dimension of non-
verbal behavior.”
TYPES OF PROXEMICS:
4 TYPES OF SPACE IN PROXEMICS
I) INTIMATE SPACE II) PERSONAL SPACE III) SOCIAL SPACE IV)PUBLIC SPACE
• Intimate space surrounds our body
and it's meant for interactions with
our loved ones that involve physical
contact. Contact distance at 0-50cm.

• Personal space is reserved to

interactions among family members
and close friends. Physical contact is
possible. Contact distance 0.5 – 1 m
• Social space is the preferred
distance for business
dealings and interactions
with people we are not very
close to. Contact distance at
1m to 4m.

• Public space requires no

physical- or direct eye-
contact. Shopping malls,
stations, airports, stages,
side-walks are designed to
keep this type of distance.
TYPES OF PROXEMIC BEHAVIOUR IN PUBLIC SPACES
PATTERNS OF PROXEMIC BEHAVIOUR WHILE WALKING
PERSONAL SPACE
• The personal space is the region
surrounding a person which
they regard as psychologically
theirs.
• Personal space is a body buffer
zone that people maintain
between themselves and others
• It refers to invisible bubble we all
carry around us which defines
how close we will approach
other people and how close we
will allow other people to
approach us.
• It is important when we interact
with others.
• We all have a certain amount of personal space and it
varies from situation to situation. We are very much aware
about the personal space. We always behave with others
considering our personal space.
• The amount of personal space required for any given
person is subjective.
• It also depends on how well you know the other person.
The more intimate the relationship, the less personal
space is involved.
• Invasion of personal space often leads to discomfort ,
anger or anxiety on the part of the victim.
TERRITORIALITY
• Territoriality is a primal instinct,
which is the concept of making
space with ownership either real
(Your home) or perceived (Your
desk area).
• We feel safe and in control of our
own territory.
• Humans define particular
boundaries of physical
environment and assume the right
to determine, who can and who
cannot move across these
boundaries.
• Each and every human needs an
minimal space in order to survive
• As over all human’s spatial boundaries transcends the
physical boundaries; A one moment we occupy our own
property and at other times we occupy someone else’s.
• Public spaces such as parks or portion of beach is shared by
many ; but may be territorialized on the basis of “First
come”
• Thus it can be said that control of space is not absolute,
people are occupying so many kind of places at different
times, adjusting territorial relationship with others.
• Positive side of Territoriality :
• Regulating people’s Interaction
• To establish sense of control in an increasing complex
environment.
