CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
This study focused on the Effects of Budgeting Allowance of 3 rd year BEED
Students to their Academic Performance of Daraga Community College.
This study will also benefit the students as well as helping them to improve their
budget planning, and manage their academic performance make a recommendation
based on the respondents what are the best thing to do in budgeting their allowances
and also the things that they need to change in their budget planning. The main purpose
of this study is to find answers from the respondents as to how and where they spend
their money every day. Budget as the main subject of this study will focus on the proper
allocation of allowances of every student in order for them to properly utilize their daily,
weekly or even monthly allowances. Of course, budgeting will be different depending
upon the student. Budgeting will be more crucial most especially if the student is living in
a dormitory wherein, he himself is the master budget of his daily needs.
Students on the other hand, learn to save their allowance as they grow and meet
different requirements in school as well as things they want to buy for their own.
Budgeting is one of the practical skills that come in useful for them (Norvilitis, et al.,
2006). It helps them to attain a better understanding of financial matters that would
become handful in their future. The manner in which the students manage their money
depends on their daily needs; somehow it changes due to some factors. Students have
their personal needs, and through this study we will know how and where they generally
spend their money. The more knowledge students have about their financial
responsibility and status the less likely they are to be in debt (Norvilitis, et al., 2006).

According to study women are more likely to report having a budget than men (Norvilitis,
et al., 2006). Allowance is a necessity for every student (Micomonaco, 2003). It is a
means of survival. It can also help students be financially responsible.
Money plays a vital role in every students life, being a 3 rd year college students it
must be practice on how to be a financially responsible, to be a responsible students is
not something that can be achieve within a day only, It must be taken as an attitude and
needs to put into their minds, one of these responsibilities of a student is to manage
their allowance given by their parents or guardians. Money is the most basic
requirements of life, without it, it cannot fulfill his/her basic needs and requirements of
the daily routine, the importance of money is increasing day by day as the living has
become so costly, allowance is referred to the money given by their parents or
guardians, allowance is money carried or given to a child at regular interval to teach the
child how to manage money. Every student encounter one of the challenging parts of
their life is to manage their allowance wisely. Many of the students are getting tough
times to manage or budget their money given by their money by their respective parents
or guardians as money serves now a necessity to every to every student. it is need to
put in their minds that they need to be financially responsible, a kind of responsibility
where an individual will be able to save and budget his/her money and spent it for
important purposes. But the big dilemma is that how they do it, it is believe that one of
the hardest part of budgeting the allowance of 3rd BEED 20 students is the isolation of
their wants and needs, a number of students mistakenly categorize their wants as a part
of their needs because they cannot perceive what their life is without it.

As students do not have same economic status others have limited amount of
money which there exist a distinction in their budget or financial planning, through this
factors that affect the budgeting of one’s student such as gender, personalities and their
age, this study mainly focuses in knowing if the students spend weekly. Additionally,
expenses of college also depend on their course, BEED students particularly one
expected to spend a lot of for the expensive materials they used in their subject.
Recognizing this, the study therefore aims to know how BEED students of Daraga
Community College. The researcher seek to describe how much allowance are given to
BEED student in general, where they spend their allowance and how at the same time
they budget it. It will illustrate the attributes of the student toward financial matters.
Statement of the problem
This research generally aims to the research generally aims to determine the
effect of the students about the students allowance the academic performance of
DCOMC 3rd year BEED Block 20 students.
Specifically, this study shall seek answers to the following questions.
1. What are the demographic profile of the III BEED students of DCOMC in terms of:
a. Age
b. Sex
c. Financial Status
d. Marital Status
2. How do the 3rd year BEED Block 20 students of Daraga Community College manage
their allowance?

3. What are the benefits of budgeting the allowance of 3rd year BEED block 20 students
to their academic performance?
Scope and Limitations
The re-searchers study is conducted only at 3 rd year BEED 20 students of
Daraga Community College, the respondents of the study are 3 rd year BEED 20
students, each of the respondents will be given a questionnaire to answer, so as to
guarantee the reasonability of gathered information, the researchers will only provide
multiple question such. This is used to evaluate and gauge the measure the amount and
the money of 3rd BEED 20 students on where and how they spend their allowance and
the impact of budgeting allowance in the academic performance of 3 rd year BEED 20
students.
This study will not cover the other problems that are not necessarily connected
from the perspective of BEED students and do not have any connection to their
challenges, such as factors that are outside of the scope of this study. The main source
of data will be the questionnaire, which was prepared by the researchers.
Significance of the study
The study deals with effects of allowance of 3rd year BEED students their academic
performance this study is significant for it will benefits the 3rd year BEED students,
parents, teachers and the researchers.

Parents: As parents have different styles of giving allowance to their children,
they believed practices of the students allowance to their children can teach them to be
financially responsible. This research will provide them information regarding their child’s
expenses of which they can use the result of this study monitor on how the allowance of
the children are spent.
Administrator: Applying the proposal action plan, which could help them and
may benefit school administrators from the study’s findings.
Teachers: This study will benefit the teachers for them to the allowance
budgeting practices of the students regards to the requirements our projects they are
giving. Also, this study will inform the teachers if the budgeted allowance of the students
is enough for them to finish all the target requirements. Moreover, this study will help to
enlighten the tears to be more considerate towards students concerns needs regarding
financial budgeting.
Researchers: This research will be benefit to the researchers. This study is
significant to the researchers not only because it is requirement but this will help them.
Future researchers: this study can benefit future researchers by serving as a
source of inspiration for future studies.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
In this chapter, the researcher will discuss the effects of budgeting allowance of
3rd year BEED students to their academic students faces. Provide the necessary
background for this chapter presents that related literature and studies which covers the

The financial status or the social economic status is commonly determined by
combining both parents’ educational level, occupational status, and the income level. In
most of the studies done on academic performance of students, it is not surprising that
financial status is one of the major factor studied while predicting academic
performance. It is believed that low financial capacity negatively affects academic
achievement because lesser financial status prevents access to vital resources and
creates additional stress at home carried out. A study on economic status in education
research and policy found that social economic background remains one of the major
sources of educational inequality and adds that an individual’s educational success
depends very strongly on the financial support of the parents. [Guirit, 2015].
Budgeting is essential for someone’s financial security, helping to ensure people
can pay everyday expenses such as lease, education cost pell grants, debts and leisure.
According to My Great Lakes [2015], it is a process proactive to financial organization,
where allows planning for both short- and long-term expenses. It way for people will
various incomes and expenses to keep their finances in order. Budgeting is Vital for
students because it allows them to plan for unforeseen expenses and school cost.
According to Sollano, Duhaylongsod. Aviso, Moneva [2018]. Due to this, several
studies have examined the effects of budgeting student’s allowance to the academic

performances [Bestlink College of the Philippines Journal of Research] and daily
allowance and academic performance.
According to a study funded by IJESC in [2018], budgeting student’s allowance
has a significant effect on the student’s academic performance. And to a new study led
by Harvard, Princeton and Warwick University science, a person’s cognitive ability or a
student’s academic performance is the measurement of student achievement across
various academic subjects [Ballotpedia].
Saifi and Mehmood,2011)states that the effect of socioeconomic status on
students’ performance result revealed that parents education, Occupation and facilities
at home affects the student achievement .Many benefits for giving allowance to the
children are teaching them regarding to make a decision (limited money with unlimited
needs), giving freedom and responsibility while using money and they will learn the
value from the money. Students then wisely comes along on his to make a saving as
well as budgeting.
Local
This study, which aimed to determine the financial attitude towards budgeting,
saving, borrowing, and investing among students of a private higher education institution
in Iloilo City, utilized the descriptive research design. The stratified random sampling
method was used in choosing the 256 respondents who were drawn from a population

of 714 which consisted of 382 third-year and 332 fourth-year students who had taken a
course in Personal Finance.
In a study conducted by Mone a, J., Tuñacao, M. (2020) most of its most of the
students receive their allowance in a daily basis. The allowances are used for thier
everyday consumptions and to be used for daily needs in school. The students appear
to have a peaceful thought of their financial lifestyles due to meeting financial duties with
much less level of debt. For the remaining money they have they can buy something for
their love ones and save money for future use. The budgeting technique that the
students used is a proportional type of budgeting as they allocated their allowances
based on percentage.
Barreto (2019) stated that people have always included budgeting in their daily
lives, it is always present; some people have adequate resources, while others don not.
Depending on a person's station in life, their expenses likewise vary. Students who get a
weekly allowance sometimes struggle to manage their money well. The study's findings
showed that improper budgeting has an impact on academic performance in terms of (1)
Attendance Improper budgeting led to a lack of transportation and food allowance,
impacting the student’s ability to attend class regularly and knowing the number of
outputs submitted during class discussion (2) Performance inappropriate allowance
budgeting impacts students’ capacity to complete all assignments for the class, leading
to late submission and poor-quality work. (3) Educational costs inadequate budgeting
allowance impacts the student’s ability to pay for additional educational costs, which
limits their participation in educational programs and events.

students’ academic performance since it demonstrates how well the teaching learning
process working. Effective allowance budgeting, which is outside the scope of the typical
teaching learning process, is seen to be important for the students.
Budgeting is vital for students because it allows them to plan for unforeseen
expenses and school costs. Budgeting aids students in achieving their academic and
financial objectives( Federal Student Aid, 2014). The first step in making a budget plan
to make students' aspirations a reality is to write them down. It necessitates difficult
decision-making, but creating goals will make the difficult decisions a little simpler.
Students should define short-, medium-, and long-term goals and measure their
progress toward reaching them as they develop a budget.

a student is given every Mondays for every week; sometimes an allowance is
given per month or given every day. An allowance is an amount given for daily pedicures
of teenagers at school to buy their needs and wants. Good money management skills
are the process of spending, saving and investing the cash of each student.

to acquire and use the resources of n entity during a certain period of time.
A budget is a plan. And a plan may either be in a descriptive or quantitative form
(Roque 2011). Budgeting is the process of stating on quantitative terms their operations,
usually in units and pesos and planned their organizational activities for a given period
of time. Budgeting is the best approach to planning, controlling as well as cost reduction
program of the company.

Metropolis were less knowledgeable and inexperienced with personal financial planning
and budgeting issues. Senior high school students' incompetence limits their ability to
make sound financial decisions making them more likely to face financial problems in
the real world. Minor financial issues can become overwhelming due to a lack of

financial literacy, leading to financial stress, affecting other aspects of life such as
personal relationships or work performance.

that the students prefer to spend their own money on food because they are students
who require various foods to survive in the academic workloads. The researcher also
revealed that the gender preferences were greatly affected the budgeting of students'
allowance, where the proportion of young female respondents end up spending money
on shopping because it is a woman's thing, they enjoy exploring new things, and
shopping can help them feel better when they are sad. On the other hand, a proportion
of young male respondents love spending money on entertainment over other activities
because men prefer to play games, and half of those who play video, computer, or
online games believe that it keeps them from studying.
According to Singh et al. (2020), their study of Student Budgeting and Spending
Behavior depicts a clear picture: more than half of the students in 138 universities in
Delhi and Mumbai in India are living on a relatively limited budget to pay their bills and
support their lifestyle, which often goes unmaintained. The majority of these students'
spending is on their lifestyle and entertainment, which impacts their allowance
budgeting. The researchers discovered that students consider dining out to be their most
unavoidable expense, preceded by movies. However, an intriguing finding was also

revealed: when faced with a budget deficit, more students reduced their daily
expenditure than those who asked their parents for money.
Students also prefer to save a portion of their monthly allowance, usually in cash
or in the bank, demonstrating good budgeting habits. Another study conducted by
Jeevitha and Kanya (2019) supported student budgeting and spending behavior
analysis. Their research looked into why, where, what, and how students budget their
money in India as a result of the cultural shift to westernization and the introduction of
malls. Jeevitha and Kanya also investigated the various saving and spending options
available to students and how they manage their budgets with limited allowance and
high expenses in the city of Coimbatore.
According to Nick L. Aduana (2017 p.308), people who succeeded in their
personal lives usually have a common denominator: they manage their finances
well by effective planning. Personal Financial Planning processes involve: 1)
conducting personal financial assessment, 2) setting goals and objectives, 3)
preparing financial plan or budget, 4) executing financial activities and 5)
monitoring and evaluation. This process helps a person to monitor and balance his/her
finances. Parents should teach their child on how to save their own money for future
purposes so that in the near future they will not depend on.

Conceptual Framework
The conceptual framework includes the input, process and output that were
based on the research topic entitled effects of budgeting allowances of 3rd year BEED
Block 20 students of Daraga Community College. Its Challenges. The input includes
three questions that the researchers seek answer. This question can be answered
through the data gathering procedure and by conducting survey questionnaire to the
respondents, which are enclosed in the process.

Research Methodology
This chapter reveals the method of research to be employed by the researchers
in conducting the study which includes the research design, research site, respondent of
the study, sources of data, research instrument, sampling techniques data gathering and
statistical tool.

Research Design
The method used in the study was of the descriptive-Qualitative variety.
particularly Husserlian phenomenology. A descriptive study design that out of all
possibilities highlighted the relevance of each informant’s experience and connected to
the respondent’s awareness of the circumstances. This is the first step in the
phenomenological reduction process given that the study also applied epoch and
bracketing. To the broadest extent possible, any preconceptions about the phenomenon
were set aside or kept at hand. In this process ,we can completely understand what the
respondents experienced from their perspectives, purposive sampling was used to
identify samples in the study.
Sampling Procedure
Purpose sampling also known as judgements selective or subjective sampling
techniques in which researcher choose participants or purpose based on specific criteria
that are relevant to the research question or objective. The researcher used purposive
sampling techniques because the respondents are the reliable source of data. The
researcher conducted a survey to 49 students from 3 rd year BEED BLOCK 20 OF
DCOMC. it is done through survey questionnaire of their Budgeting allowance of 3rd yr
BEED 20 students of DCOMC.
Research Instrument
The questionnaire was used as the main data gathering instrument. this
instrument to be prepared focused on answering the statement of the problem. the
questionnaire will be distributed to the respondent. The date gathering instrument was

structured as a scale range from 1- 4 where in the (1) is strongly disagree,(2) is
disagree,(3) is agree and the last one is( 4) strongly agree .This legend will help the
researcher to analysis the results of conducting data gathering.
Data Collection Procedure
First, the researchers wrote a letter to the office of the dean requesting
permission to conduct the study. Upon approval, the researchers prepared the survey
questionnaire and distributed it to the respondents through hard copies which are the 3 rd
year BEED Block 20 students of Daraga Community College S.Y. 2023-2024. After
submitting the survey questionnaires and other needed data in the study, the
researchers tabulated, analyzed and interpret the findings and results obtained in the
study.
Data Gathering Procedure
The researcher will use questionnaire and checklist regarding budgeting
allowance of 3rd year BEED 20 students. The total numbers of respondents are 49.
Research Site
This study will be conducted in Daraga Community College at Salvacion Daraga
Albay and the target respondent is the 3rd Year BEED 20 students.
Respondents of the Study

The respond of the study are the BEED III BLOCK 20 students of DARAGA
COMMUNITY COLLEGE of Academic year 2023-2024. The researchers choose the
BEED III BLOCK 20 students as the respondents to know the effects of budgeting
allowances of 3rd year BEED students to their Academic Performance. This study
covers 49 students.
Sources of Data
This study used primary and secondary of data. Primary sources are 3rd year
BEED BLOCK 20 STUDENTS of Daraga Community College with total number of 49
respondents, The secondary sources of data are internet and any other related
resources of this data.
Sampling Techniques

Based on the presented data, there is a high percentage of pupils who got the
score of 5 which consists of 33% out of 100%. There was only 13% of the pupils who got
the lowest score of 2. Upon consolidation, there are still pupils who got low scores and
they need to undergo specific interventions.
