From Flower To Perfume - Harnessing The Fragrant Qualities of The Rose (Rosa Rubiginosa) Flower

The document presents an investigatory project on creating a homemade perfume using the rose flower (Rosa rubiginosa) to explore its fragrant qualities and promote eco-friendliness. The study aims to extract fragrance compounds and develop a sustainable method for perfume production, hypothesizing that the homemade version will have superior properties compared to commercial perfumes. The methodology involves soaking rose petals in vodka, with findings suggesting that ethanol would be a better solvent and that essential oils enhance the scent more effectively than carrier oils.

I. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Have you ever tried to make a perfume on your own? Some people have tried

creating their own DIY perfume at home using alcohol essential oils and glycerin. These

experiments are fun and allow people to make their perfume customizable and unique.

Making perfume at home can be more budget-friendly than buying regular commercial

perfume; it helps to create and eco-friendly so that we can avoid harsh chemicals and

allergens which are found in store bought perfumes. The main reason we have chosen this

research is so that we can prevent animal testing.

II. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This project seeks to answer the following questions:

1.To extract and identify the fragrance compounds present in the flower.

2.To develop a sustainable and eco-friendly method for producing perfume from the flower.

III. HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

It is predicted that a homemade perfume made from the extract of rose will have a

more intense and longer-lasting fragrance, as well as greater antimicrobial and antioxidant

properties, compared to a commercial perfume made from synthetic fragrances, due to the

unique combination and concentration of bioactive compounds present in the flower

extract."

IV. METHODOLOGY

Materials:
● Rose flower (rosa rubinginosa)

● Measuring spoons

● Vodka

● Carrier or essential oils

● Bowl

● Honey

● Cheesecloth

● Cinnamon

1. Pluck flowers from a rose and add them to a bowl. Then pour vodka into the

bowl(100ml).

2. For five days, monitor the roses daily. After 5 days drain the roses from the mixture

using a cheesecloth.

3. After the mixture is drained, mix and add honey as well as essentials oils.

5. After 2 days remove and place into a spray bottle.Observe if there are any allergic

reactions or signs that show it is not good for you.

V. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

At the end of the experiment, we have observed that after soaking the roses into the vodka the

once red roses have lost their color and became white or pinkish. Even though the vodka

absorbed the color of the roses it didnt really absorb the scent as the vodka scent overpowered it.

Instead of using an essential oil, we used a carrier oil (almond oil) which is also commonly used

to make perfume and it also has its benefits like making it safe to apply to the skin while

allowing the scent to shine through due to its neutral odor. The honey and cinnamon added a

good scent aswell.

VI. CONCLUSION

To conclude everything up, the better option for the solvent would be ethanol as vodka has a

strong scent which may overpower the roses or any type of flower you use. And adding an

essential or carrier oil could be up to you depending on which one you would rather have in

your perfume, but in the results of our experiment the most efficient option would be to use an

essential oil because an essential oil provides a more potent and complex scent for the perfume.

Also the longer you leave the rose petals to soak into the vodka the better it smells it could be up

to 4 weeks depending on your choice, wether or not you want the scent of the flower to be

strong.
