Hi ,

As you know, Beth and I have our birthdays on the same day – the 18th – and we’ve 4 to

mum’s 5 us a special cake. She’s an expert cake maker! Her cakes are always delicious and
they look amazing. I’m making Spanish tortilla. They’re easy to make. You slice some potatoes and chop an
onion. Then you 6 them in oil until they get soft. Then you 7 the potato and
onion with some eggs, salt and some herbs and spices, and fry that. The only difficult part is turning it over.
Anyway, I was 8 if you’d like to come to the party. We’re asking people to bring crisps.
We’re going to mix all the different flavours together in bowls so that nobody knows what kind of crisps they
are going to eat until they taste them!

Project worksheet: a digital poster
Step 1
1 Look at the international dishes below. Which do you think is normally a starter, a main course or
a dessert? Where do you think each dish is from? Write Egypt or France.
2 In groups, choose the dishes for your digital poster. You can use the food from either Egypt or
France or another country you find interesting. Use the phrases below.
Page 1/2
Step 2
3 Read the questions and match them with the answers below.
Is the dish served hot or cold? What ingredients does your dish contain?
1
There are different recipes for um ali, but it usually contains bread, milk and cream. It also has two
types of nut: pistachio and almond. Some people use a spice called cinnamon. This gives um ali a
bitter taste.
2
Tarte tatin is a dessert, so it is sweet. In fact, it is very sweet. This is because it contains a lot of sugar
and lots of apples. People also eat it with ice cream… which is also sweet!
3
People normally eat baba ganoush at room-temperature. This means that the food isn’t hot and it isn’t
cold. However, people can eat it shortly after they have cooked it when the food is still warm.

Hi,
All the actors perform brilliantly… especially Scarlett Johansson, who plays
Natasha. The British actor Ray Winstone is very good as the villain and David
A
Harbour, who plays Natasha and Yelena’s dad, is very funny. The action scenes are
absolutely spectacular. Lots of people in the audience were cheering during them.
The special effects are really convincing. At one point in the film, I thought the
actors were really on a spaceship!
B What’s the best film you’ve seen recently? Write back and tell me.
How are you? I’ve just seen a fantastic action film at the cinema. It’s called Black
C
Widow and it’s the latest in the Marvel series of films.
It tells the story of two young sisters called Natasha and Yelena who join a group
D
of female secret agents in Russia. They discover that an evil villain called Draykov
controls these secret agents, including the two sisters. They escape from Draykov’s
control and decide to help the other secret agents and destroy the villain.
I love all the Marvel films, but this is one of the best in the series. I highly
E
recommend it. Go and see it!
Yours,
Aleesha

3 Alex and his friends are organising a charity cake sale. Read Alex's statements and decide if he
is a good leader. What should he do or say differently? Discuss in pairs.
I’m the leader, so my opinion is the only one that matters. I don’t care what
you all think. We are only going to sell chocolate cake at the charity cake sale.
James, I think you should bake the cakes for the cake sale… No, wait, can
you do this Anna? In fact, you do it, Rosa. James, can you help Anna bake
the cakes… I mean Rosa. And let’s all advertise it in different places, too.
OK, you’ve finished making the cakes, Rosa. Let me try one. Yuck, this is
disgusting! Next time, I'll be bake it myself!

How do younger generations learn about How do people find food? Where is the place
traditional methods of collecting food? Is it a traditional method? and what is it like?
1
The Sahara is a desert in north Africa. It is very hot there. The average daily temperature is 38C,
but it is very cold at night. It can be below 0C. It doesn’t often rain in this desert – only about
0.7 centimetres every year. There are not many towns or cities in the desert, but about two
million people live there.
2
The people who live in the Sahara are mainly nomadic. This means they travel from place to
place. They eat plants and pick fruit from trees that grow near oases (a place with water, plants
and trees in the desert), and they hunt animals, such as rabbits, for their meat. Nomads have
collected food like this for thousands of years.
3
Young people watch the older generation collect food and they learn from them. This is so that
they know what fruit is edible and how to hunt an animal correctly. They then watch the older
generation prepare the meat or use the skin or fur for things like clothes or blankets.

We are creating a new school for your community. Please let us know what you think by
answering the questions below! Give reasons for your answers.
1 What school subjects do you think people 3 What will students do after the lessons?
should study?
2 In groups, choose what you want to include in your school website. Use the phrases below
and Exercise 1 to help you.
Step 2
3 Read some responses to the questionnaire. Match responses A–D with questions 1–4
from Exercise 1.
A
Students should spend their day doing lessons and other activities, for example meditation and
yoga. Meditation will help to improve the students’ concentration and yoga will help them to
relax so they learn better.
B
In the new school, there should be a combination of traditional subjects and subjects that prepare
students for life in the 21st century. For example, students should learn how to take care of the
environment and prevent climate change.
C
The timetable should be flexible. This could allow students to start school when they want in the
morning. For example, if they start at 7 AM, they can finish at 3 PM. However, if they start at 9
AM, they will finish at 5 PM. This will help because everyone learns best at different times.
D
Students should do after-school clubs after their lessons. There will be traditional after-school
clubs, such as art and sports, and more modern clubs, such as software development or learning
about artificial intelligence, so there is something for everyone.
