Phonogram List

The following lesson sets use this resource:

• Introducing Phonograms
• Reviewing Phonograms
• Reading Words with Phonograms
• Practice Games

This list of words contains high frequency phonograms. Phonograms are body-rime units
referring to the (1) body, the vowel letters in a syllable and all the letters after it, and (2) rime,
the vowel sound and all the sounds after it. These units are sometimes called word families, but
that term refers to groups of similarly spelled words with related meanings. As a result, that
term is not used here.

These are the highest frequency phonograms in an analysis of words that are contained in texts
designed for students in Grades 1 to 5. The only phonograms listed have at least 10
monosyllabic words that contain that phonogram. The list does not include phonograms that
contain a schwa (/ə/) sound or that are more than 3 syllables in length. They are categorized by
the frequency of the phonograms in one-syllable words. Most common names have been
removed. The names of locations and groups of people remain. This list is not exhaustive. There
are other patterns that were not included because they were lower in frequency.

This list is designed to be used in combination with the Introducing, Reviewing, and Reading
Words with Phonogram Lesson Guides for the Foundational Reading Lesson Set. The list was
created by Devin Kearns and the lesson guides by Devin Kearns ([email protected]) and
Marcia Ferreira.
