Dear Grade 10 candidate
Your mid-year examinations are upon you and these examinations are important for you
in several ways:
The results will serve as an indication of the progress you have made in the first
half of your Grade 10 year.
The examinations provide an opportunity to consolidate the work that has been
covered up until this point (more than half of the Grade 10 curriculum).
These exams will confirm whether you have made the correct subject choice.
You have received your examination timetable (it is in this booklet). I would like to
encourage you to draw up a daily revision plan for the duration of the weeks leading up
to the exams and for the exam period itself. You will need to take into account that you
may have multiple exams in a period of a few days and therefore need to prepare well in
advance.
Read through the articles, provided on the next three pages, that give some helpful hints
on coping mechanisms for mid-year exams. This booklet, along with Engage and
Schoology, contains the exam content for each of your exams. Also make use of the
support classes available to you in the next 2 weeks leading up to the exams. Your
teachers are always willing to assist you.
There is no magic secret to doing what needs to be done, but the following principles
might be helpful:
Time is limited. Do not leave all your learning for later – start today.
Planning is useful, but planning is not a substitute for action. Get out a pen and
paper and do the work.
Divide your work into manageable sections (small steps).
Do not wait until you feel like studying. Then it may never happen.
Wishing you a successful exam, the first one in the FET phase. Stay focused on the goals
you have set for yourself at the start of the year. Good luck, gentlemen!
Warmest regards
Mr Marius Langenhoven

Study Tips
Adapted from an article by Terri Lailvaux, Parent24
The two things that tend to fall away when the pressure hits are the fun and the basic
grounding for effective studying. Homework and studying are often done in the back of
the car while waiting for a sibling to finish sport or late at night when everyone is
exhausted.
The earlier your son gets into the habit of studying effectively, the better. Once the bad
habits are learned, it is so hard to turn back. Many children drag themselves to their
books and half-read a bunch of boring stuff and they consider that to be “studying”.
They convince themselves that they cannot study if they do not have music playing or if
they are not lying comfortably on the bed! These are really not great ways to study.
Have a plan
The first part of getting it right is in the planning ahead. You should have the full term
timetable of subjects, test, sport events, outings, assignments etc. Then add all the
personal diary dates to the schedule e.g. family birthdays, weekends away etc.
Once you have all the info, you can plan out a schedule of everything and you will see
that there is not a lot of time left for studying. Divide the subjects up and allocate free
slots to studying. (Ensure that there are free slots allocated to fun stuff too)
Colour code the schedule i.e. sport in yellow, tests in red, holidays in blue etc. When the
whole thing is complete, it makes it easy to look at the big picture and mentally prepare
for what’s ahead. If you see a block of red (i.e. tests) looming, you know that you have to
knuckle down and hit the books BUT the great part is that often just after the block of
tests will be a holiday, a party or a fun outing to look forward to.
When you can see the big picture and also the smaller chunks, it enables you to prepare
properly and half the studying battle is won.
Some Tips for Studying
Don’t study with the TV on or in a crowded and busy place. Research has shown that
you need to be in a quiet, well-ventilated, uncluttered space - preferably at a desk
with a blank wall in front of you
Divide subjects up into specific time frames so that you do not get bored or
overloaded with one subject. You should study for 30 – 55 minutes followed by a 5
minute break. During the break, leave the room, stretch, have a drink and get some
fresh air before going back to the study area.
Certain subjects like Maths, Physical Sciences, Accounting, IT, CAT, EGD etc require
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Doing calculations, examples, drawings etc over and
over until it becomes second nature is the only way to ensure that the information is
retained. Remember it is not only about these exams but about having sufficient
retention to be able to move up a year and carry on with more complex work.
