"Read this extract from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl and then answer the questions."
“Here we go!” cried Willy Wonka, his voice ringing with excitement. He skipped ahead of the group, his
purple coat fluttering behind him as he dashed through the towering, ornate doors of the factory. Behind
him, the children and their parents stumbled forward, eager to catch up, all wide-eyed with anticipation. As
5 they stepped into the grand room, they were greeted by the most mind-boggling* sight that anyone could
possibly imagine.
The room was immense—vast beyond anything they had ever seen. Everywhere they looked, they saw
gigantic, whirring machines, their gears and pulleys working with extraordinary precision. Everywhere, there
was movement—constant movement—the soft hum of machinery blending with the faint sound of
10 churning* candy. The air was thick with the sweet, mouth-watering scent of melting chocolate and fresh
sugar, a smell so intoxicating that it made their stomachs rumble with hunger. Rivers of thick, velvety
chocolate wound through the factory floor like shimmering brown serpents, twisting and turning as they
flowed gently from one end of the room to the other, their steady slurp filling the air. At the center of it all
stood an enormous glass lift, gleaming in the soft golden light, ready to take them to any floor, any place,
15 high above or deep below.
“Everything here is made of chocolate!” Augustus Gloop shouted, his eyes lighting up with delight as he
fixated* on the nearest chocolate river.
“I could drink that whole river, I swear it! Every drop, every drop!”
The room seemed to hold its breath.
20 “Stop! You mustn’t touch anything!” Willy Wonka commanded, his voice suddenly sharp, his fingers raised in
warning. “This is a place of magic, a place of creation, and I won’t have anyone spoiling it, not a single soul!
The candy here must remain untouched—untouched—until it’s ready!”
Charlie, his hand still firmly held by his grandfather, gazed around in awe, hardly able to process the
magnificent sight. The room was alive with color: strange, ethereal* candies floated in mid-air, their shapes

25 constantly shifting, sparkling in the light as if they had minds of their own. He could hardly believe his eyes.
He had never imagined such a place, never, not in his wildest dreams.
“Come, come! Follow me!” Willy Wonka called, his voice filled with excitement once more. He twirled
around, his colorful jacket a blur as he moved ahead, beckoning them to follow. The children and their
parents scurried after him, all of them almost tripping over their own feet in their eagerness.
30 As they walked deeper into the factory, they passed enormous vats bubbling with candy mixtures, the air
filled with the rich, sugary aroma. Everywhere they looked, Oompa-Loompas—small, bright-eyed people
with cheerful faces and nimble hands—bustled about, tirelessly stirring, mixing, and pouring ingredients into
perfect creations. Their little feet barely touched the ground almost (tripping over their own feet) as they
darted about, working with such care that each piece of candy seemed to glow with magic, pure magic.
35 “Everything here is made to perfection!” Willy Wonka beamed, his eyes sparkling with pride. “There is no
place like this, no place like this anywhere in the world—this is where dreams become reality, where candy
becomes a dream, and dreams become candy!”
But despite his warnings, the children couldn’t help themselves. Their eyes were wide with desire, and their
hands reached out greedily toward all the sweets within arm’s reach. The room was a treasure chest of
40 delights, and they couldn’t resist, couldn’t resist trying to take a piece of the magic for themselves.
Just as Augustus stretched his hand toward a chocolate river, a loud crash echoed through the room.
Everyone froze.
Willy Wonka turned, his face suddenly pale.
“No one has ever done this before...” he whispered, his eyes wide with horror. “This... this could change
45 everything...”
And then, the ground began to shake...
