Summary

Her name was Xena. She had purple hair and lovely eyeliner, but I was just The Handler. The
Handler. I handled the quests, expeditions, and research ever since I met her on the ship. This
was supposed to be a New World, not new me, I guess.

Apart of the series. Don't need to read the other parts to understand, but will be appreciated.

The Handler. I handled the quests, expeditions, and research ever since I met her on the ship.
This was supposed to be a New World, not new me, I guess.

We bunked together - her in a lovely bed for weary Hunters, and I in a scratchy loft. If she
wasn't hunting, she was eating or laying in her bed. A time or two I caught her staring. I
always wondered what she was wanting to ask, but I blushed too hard to even think.

Shouldn't get my hopes up. I am what the Old World called a nerd. I was passionate about
exploring, but she- that wonderful Hunter was a fighter. She wouldn't want me. Especially
not after having to rescue me a time or two… hundred.

One bright and sunny afternoon, Xena approached as usual, and as usual, my face flushed.

“Ready for your next quest, Hunter?” I asked. She shook her head once, and I opened my
book for her to see.

Search for a Rathalos.

I wasn't sure if she could do it, as I had a secret. It wasn't just a Rathalos. This one was
sliver.

She had been running back and forth to the Smith, but her weapon - a great sword- was in
the same tree as when she started. Xena took a deep breath and took the quill. She signed it
with her scrawl and it was done. She was going to take it on.

I headed out as she went to eat and waited for her in the Guilding Lands. It was quiet.

I just didn't understand. Liking her wasn't in my job description. Guess I didn't have a
choice.

Back in the Old World, before it was destroyed, I probably would have been married off to
some dude and gotten it over with. Some rich dude, maybe. A smith or chef.

Are you more mad Xena is a girl or mad because you are, by all means, her co-worker?

“Shut it,” I whispered. It wasn't fair.

Yes, but when is life fair? Does she even know your actual name, Handler?

My eyes started to water at my own thoughts, as I tried to keep them open.

Just keep your head up, keep going.

I stopped. My legs were weak. Could I even look at Xena anymore? I felt my sadness turn
to anger, as I couldn't let Xena see me like this. My teeth clenched, and my first tightened. I
punched the closest thing to me, which happened to be a tree.
I just missed slightly. Something in my hand popped and I screamed in agony. I wasn’t one
for cursing, but I let out the most foul words I could think of.

Then I realized what I was doing. I was pacing. Away from camp. Auto-pilot. I had climbed
down the vines and into the woods. I wasn't lost, per se. Just… Yes, I was lost. I didn't care.
The pain was a lot.

Potions weren't for broken bones, nor was meat, or Energy Drinks, or bottles or anything I
had.

I slid down the tree, no longer angry, but definitely crying. It didn't even matter if I died
out here. I wanted to die out here.

And there it was. I heard it in the distance. A distant sound of wings in the air. I froze and
stood, slowly. Trees crunched in front of me.

It had spotted her? No, the wings slowed as if it had landed.

My eyes darted to the footsteps behind me. Xena and her Palico, Mouse.

“Go, get him!” I whispered, and she smirked. She got this. We crept forward, me tailing
her as close as possible. Not enough to touch her. If I ever touched her, I'd probably die of a
heart attack.

From behind a bush, we hid, with our eyes widened. Two men. One taller man with blonde
hair and brown armor, a chain whip in hand, and a younger man with pink hair, a green tunic,
and a sword in hand.

They were quick. Quicker than Xena would be with her Great Sword, but not as quick as
the dual blades welders.

They definitely had it though. It was amazing to watch. The younger man's dexterity, but
the older one's strength. Both tearing down the Rathalos- a sliver one, nonetheless- with
ease.

When the Rathalos fell, Xena grabbed my arm, but I pulled her down. Would it be strange
that we had been watching them?

Something red caught my eye.

Right above the young one's belt was a hole in his tunic, a wound. He grazed it with his
finger and winced, grunting.

He took the sides of the hole of his green tunic and tore it open to reveal a gash the size of
a Zenni. He was bleeding so much, staining his tunic, his pants.

The older one knelt. “Do you have bandages?” His voice was strangled. Hurt.

The pink haired man smiled lightly. His face was so pale. He reached into his pocket and
pulled out a bottle.
Inside was a little fairy with purple hair, like Xena's, and wings. He opened the bottle, and
the fairy looked up, smiling. The fairy flew out of the bottle and zoomed around the wounded
one's body, looking for something.

The fairy stopped at Link's belt and rubbed her tiny forefinger and thumb together. He was
starting to heal. I wondered if we could get those for aid in camp.

When the wound was closed, the fairy flew up to his face and pressed her forehead to his.
“Good-bye, Link.”

The little fairy flew away.

“How many more of those do you have?”

The young one- Link- pulled off his belt and put the bottle back into his apparently
abnormally large pockets. He tore his tunic completely open and off. I wondered if he was
flirting. That was something I didn't need to see. Sweat glistened on his chest. I turned to
Xena.

“Are you done with your expedition?”

She looked irritated. I shut my mouth and stared at the dirt. “I'm sorry.”

“If you are there, we will attack. Get from there!’ It was the older man's voice. Xena
immediately stood and I followed suit. Already a broken finger. Didn't need to be hurt more, I
guess.

“Why were you watching us?” He asked.

“We weren't! Just coming to fight the monster you just took down- well, she was!” I
smiled.

“I apologize then.”

They were still far away. I almost had to shout everything “I am the Handler, this is Xena.
Come from the town over. Where are y'all headed?” They didn't even look like they had
come from this era, especially Link, who now wore blue.

I looked at the Rathalos; it was stone dead and carved.

“Are you two Monster Hunters?”

I opened my mouth, but Xena stopped me with an arm across my chest. She nodded once.

“I am Simon Belmont, and this is Link. You mute, too?” He pointed to Xena.

Xena nodded again just once. She was so cool.

“Want to come with us? We need all the help we can get. We can set up a trade route
afterwards, especially if you two know the area better."
I turned to Xena. "He's the one sending new Rampages. We didn't even have them before
him. If you aren't in, I will go by myself. I have to save my people. Are you coming?" It hurt.
What is the said no?

Xena rummaged through her pockets and smiled.

"We're in."

"What is the small cat for?"

We looked at Mouse. He was in armor but layered where it only looked like a cloak. Aw.

"Leave my cat alone."
