This game is a fun and interactive way to practice using modal verbs while also encouraging

teamwork and problem-solving. Here’s how it works step-by-step:

1. Group Formation: Students are divided into small groups. Each group receives a card that
describes a place or situation (e.g., "getting married," "on a train," "at a football game," etc.).

2. Creating Clues: Each student in the group writes five sentences using different modal
verbs. Modal verbs include words like can, could, might, should, must, may, will, and would.
The sentences are designed to give clues about the place or situation on the card, without
directly naming it.

For example, if the card says "on a train," the group might write sentences like:

o "You must have a ticket to board."

o "You might hear an announcement over the loudspeaker."

o "People can sit in their seats or walk down the aisle."

o "You should be quiet and respectful to others."

o "You could meet new people during your journey."

3. Presenting the Clues: Each group presents their five sentences to the class, one at a time.

4. Guessing the Place or Situation: After each group presents their sentences, the rest of the
class tries to guess the place or situation based on the clues provided.

5. Discussion: After the correct guess is made, the group can discuss the modal verbs used
and clarify any confusion about their meaning or usage.

This game not only helps students practice modals but also encourages them to think creatively
and critically about how to describe different scenarios. It’s a great way to engage with both
language and the collaborative process of group work.
