Importance of Philosophy of Education
1 Philosophy of education examines the meaning of education, the goals of
education, the forms of education and the methods used to propagate education
in a country or a region
2 Philosophy of education is the sum of the practical ideals of a society in general
which guide the content and practice of education
3 Philosophy of education seeks to clarify the goals and objectives of education
and the terms used, and to subject to reason, and critical judgement, any issues in
education
Why is Philosophy of education considered important?
Education the world over is one of the most significant aspects of human
behavior about which the World’s most distinguished philosophers have
written and as such, students of ‘’education’’ should be conscious of the
thoughts that have given direction to our current thinking and direction in
Education.
Studying philosophy of education creates awareness of the influence of
philosophers, past and present, to the development of Education in the
world today
Philosophy provides a student with an understanding of some of the most
important issues and considerations and concerns in education, past and
present
Philosophy of education empowers a student to be broader in outlook, to
reflect before rushing to quick answers, to introspect and give serious
thought to all matters that relate to knowledge, teaching and learning in
and out of school
Philosophy of education enables a student to examine his or her current
beliefs concerning education and to apply the procedures of inquiry and
critical thinking to educational issues with a view to adjusting to both
existing and emerging concerns in our individual lives, family community
and society at large
Philosophy of education is intellectually exciting in that the student keeps
on pondering over phenomena observed and experiences that one has
gone through, with a view to offering possible solutions or rational
explanations that may be theoretical and/or practical
Philosophy of education prompts a student teacher to be critical about
traditional beliefs and practices in education, to re-examine goals of
education, the curriculum, quality controls and evaluation measures put in
place as times and circumstances change, with a view to recommending the
best possible for a country.
