This is the Progression Test for Listening, Stage 6.

There are four parts to this progression test.

You will hear each part twice. For each part of the test, there will be time for you
to look through the questions and time for you to check your answers. Write your
answers on the question paper.

PAUSE 00'05"

Now open your question paper and look at Part 1.

PAUSE 00'05"

There are five questions in this part.

For each question, there are three pictures and a short recording.
Choose the correct picture and circle the letter A, B or C below it.

Before we start, here is an example.

Where is the girl’s hat?

F1: Where’s your new hat, Sally? I hope you haven’t left it on the school bus.

F2: Don’t worry, Mum. I put it in my school bag because I was too hot.

F1: Are you sure? I can’t see it there. You probably dropped it in the road somewhere.

F2: Oh, here it is – hanging in the hall. [sheepishly] I forgot to take it this morning.

PAUSE 00’05”

The answer is A.

Look at the three pictures for question 1 now.

PAUSE 00'05"

Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will hear each recording twice.

1 – What does the girl buy at the jewellery store?

M/30s F/12, US

M: Good afternoon. Can I help you?

F: Thank you. I want to buy some jewellery for my friend. I like these rings.

M: Remember people need to try on rings really. What about one of these bracelets?

F: Are those bracelets? They look a bit like necklaces. I like this one. I’ll take it. She’s got
lots of necklaces, already.

M: Excellent! I’ll put it in a bag for you.

2 – Which type of transport did the boy prefer?

M/11/UK F/11/UK

M: We had a long journey home from holiday! First by car to the airport, then the flight, and
finally the train.

F: Do you like plane journeys?

M: I love short flights, but it’s six hours from there! The drive to the airport was awesome –
Dad took a road through the mountains.

F: What about the train?

M: It was okay and very nice to know we were nearly home.

3 – Where did the boy find his book?

M/11/US F/40s/US

F: Did you find your history book? Was it under your bed?

M: Well, I looked in the bedroom, I was sure it was there but I was wrong. So I went to the
kitchen, that’s when I saw your books from work on the table. Mine was under them.

F: Sorry!

M: It’s fine. Can I do my homework in the living room now I’ve got the book?

F: Sure.

4 – What would the girl like to be in the future?

M/12/UK F/12/UK

M: So, do you want to be a scientist when you’re older and work in a lab?

F: It’d be really interesting to do that. I’m planning on going into space, though! But you
have to have a degree in science or computer engineering.

M: You mean you don’t need experience of flying planes?

F: They only have one pilot up there! The others have different jobs – like repairing things.

M: Right.

F: I’ve got the recipe for the dish we’re making, Dad. Have we got all the ingredients?

M: Nearly. It seems to be just the fish that we’re missing.

F: What about the cucumber?

M: I think there’s one in the fridge. The corn should be there too.

F: Mom had to throw the cucumber away. She said the corn would last another few days,
though.

A The bus hasn’t arrived yet.

B She can’t decide what to wear.

C Her football match hasn’t finished.

PAUSE 00'05"

F/12/UK

F: Hi. I’m going to be late coming to you from my football match. My mum knows the bus is
never on time, so she’s going to get me in the car. But we’ve still got the second half to
play! Anyway, I’ve got my clothes for Ava’s party with me – I spent ages choosing them.
So I’ll be as quick as I can!

M/14/US F/10/US

M: Is that your homework? Oh, I remember doing that in math class when I was your age.

F: I’m not sure I understood it when the teacher showed us in the lesson.

M: Why don’t you do what you can, and when you finish, I’ll look at it. If you get everything
right, then you’ll know that you did understand!

F: OK.

8 – You hear a boy talking to his mother about an art club.

Why is the boy excited about joining the art club?

A He knows some other members.

B He often gets bored after school.

C He thinks the activities sound good.

PAUSE 00'05"

M/11/US F/40s/US

M: I’m going to join that art club you told me about, Mom.

F: Great. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

M: Yeah. They do all sorts of creative stuff that we never do in art lessons at school so I
can’t wait to go. School art lessons aren’t interesting at all.

F: Maybe you’ll make some friends there.

M: Well, there’ll be kids there with the same interests as me.

PAUSE 00'05"

F/13/UK

F: I have to go to my grandmother’s because my parents are away. I wanted to stay at

home – it’s only one night! And they let me travel there by myself – they didn’t think
that’d worry me. I usually visit my cousin while I’m there – she’s away at university
though, which is a shame. At least your party isn’t that night. I’d be disappointed to miss
it.

F/40s/UK M/10/UK

M: Did you enjoy the film, Mum? I thought the main actors were so talented.

F: They really made me laugh. And did you like the music?

M: I didn’t really notice it. I was more interested in the story, which was extraordinary. You
never knew what was going to happen next.

F: I just had to know how it would end! And the music suited it so well.

10

F/20s/UK

F: Can everyone listen now, please. I’m going to give you an update on how the school
recycling project is going.

We’ve been collecting clothes for recycling for a few weeks now. I’d like to remind you
that these need to be taken to the hall. Some people have been putting bags of clothes
in the library. Space is very limited there, so make sure you take them to the right place
in future.

The clothes we collect will be sold to a company that recycles them, which means that
the school will have money to spend on things that we’re short of. We’ll consider getting
more computers in the future – I know some of you think we need them. However,
dictionaries are what we need most urgently for now.

The next part of our project is to recycle things that we use at school. We’ll put special
bins in the classrooms for you to drop cardboard in when you’ve finished with it. Be
careful not to put other things in them. We know that glass can be recycled too, any
bottles you have, for example. But for now, please take those home for recycling.

We’re keen for students to learn more about recycling in lessons. Students in the year
above you will spend some time in chemistry classes looking at why things can or
cannot be recycled. Your year group will focus on how recycling stops rubbish harming
the environment, and that’s part of the biology curriculum.

Finally, I’ll give you my email address, in case your parents want to ask me any
questions about the recycling project. It’s [email protected]. I’ve noticed that
some of you still don’t know how to spell my name – it’s J-A-R-D-E-L.

OK. Any questions?

That is the end of Part 3

PAUSE 00'10"

Now turn to Part 4, questions 16 to 20.

You will hear an interview with a girl called Grace, who is talking about the time
when Sofia, a student from Italy, visited her family in London.
For each question, circle the correct answer A, B or C.

You now have 45 seconds to look at the questions for Part 4.

PAUSE 00'45"

Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will hear the recording twice.

F/11/UK M/UK

M: I’m talking to eleven-year-old Grace about a student exchange visit. Recently, an Italian
girl called Sofia stayed with Grace and her family for two weeks.

Grace, did you go to the airport to meet Sofia?

F: Yes, with my parents. There were so many people there. And I just sat and watched
them all. When Sofia came through the doors, I felt glad she’d sent me a photo of
herself. I’m not sure I’d have recognised her otherwise. She looked so stylish – it made
me feel bad for not making an effort with what I was wearing.

M: Did you have lots to talk to Sofia about on the way home?

F: Actually, Sofia spent most of the journey talking to my dad. I had loads of things I
wanted to ask her – but Dad never gave me the chance. The thing is, he’s visited the
region that she comes from, so they had that in common. They talked and I just listened
to them. And they spoke in English because her English was better than Dad’s Italian.

M: What did you do on your first evening together?

F: I showed Sofia around our house and helped her unpack – which didn't take as long as
I expected. Then we went out for dinner. In the restaurant, she was willing to try new
dishes and flavours and ate things I’d never have gone for. When we got home, I asked
if she needed to go to bed early after all the travelling, but she was fine.

M: And during Sofia’s visit, I’m sure you found out a lot about each other…..

F: Of course! That’s what’s great about exchange visits. As well as practising another
language, you learn about the other person’s school. Sofia also talked about what she
does when she’s not at school – I was particularly keen to know about that, and luckily I
discovered that we’re both into similar things. She told me all about her family too. I
learnt that family’s really important in Italy.

12

M: And now Sofia’s gone home, do you miss her?

F: Yes! The house is so quiet! And doing homework isn’t nearly as much fun without her to
chat to while we’re doing it – although I do finish it more quickly! We’re still in touch,
though, and I can’t wait until it’s my turn to visit her. I’m excited about seeing Sofia
again, getting to know all her friends and finding out more about Italy.

M: I hope you have a great time. Thanks, Grace.

PAUSE 00'05"

Now listen again.

REPEAT

PAUSE 00'05"

That is the end of the test. Please stop writing now. Your teacher will now collect
all the question papers.
