What is a removable partial denture?
● A removable partial denture is a
removable denture that replaces
some teeth in a partially edentulous
arch. GPT
What is a temporary removable partial
denture?
● A removable dental prosthesis, or
maxillofacial prosthesis, designed to
enhance esthetics, stabilization, and/or
function for a limited period of time,
after which it is to be replaced by a
definitive dental or maxillofacial
prosthesis. GPT.
Types of temporary removable partial
denture
● Spoon denture: a tissue supported
denture to replace one or two anterior
teeth in young patients.
Types of temporary removable partial
denture
● Every’s denture: used for restoring
multiple bounded teeth in the maxilla.
Types of temporary removable partial
denture
● Interim denture: a temporary RPD used
for a short period until definitive
prosthesis is ready
Types of temporary removable partial
denture
● Transitional denture: used when full loss
of teeth is anticipated over time and are
adjusted many times due to loss of
teeth.
Types of temporary removable partial
denture
● Treatment denture: used when
therapeutic action is estimated such as
full healing of soft tissues.
Indications for temporary removable
partial denture
1. Appearance: an interim denture can
replace anterior teeth which are highly
important aesthetically and can affect
the patients overall health mentally and
socially.
Indications for temporary removable
partial denture
2. Space maintenance: when teeth are
extracted or fall out of the socket due
to any factor the adjacent teeth
migrate causing malposition of the
teeth.
Indications for temporary removable
partial denture
3. Following surgical extraction of teeth:
when a surgical extraction is needed for
a patient in order to make a removable
partial denture (chromium-cobalt) a
temporary RPD is needed until the
healing process of the extracted area is
fully done.
Indications for temporary removable
partial denture
4. Conditioning the patient for wearing a
prosthesis: a temporary restoration
may be made to aid the patient in
making a transition to complete
dentures when the total loss of
teeth is inevitable
Advantages of temporary removable
partial denture
1. Allows rapid results as the extracted areas heal so
that the patient doesn’t have to wait until the
areas heal to fabricate a metallic RPD.
2. Protection for Remaining Teeth from migration
and overeruption.
Advantages of temporary removable
partial denture
3. Functional and Aesthetic Restoration, avoiding
any social problems (due to aesthetics or speaking
disability) or nutritional problems (due to
problems in mastication)
4. Support for Soft Tissues.
Disadvantages of temporary removable
partial denture
1. Low thermal conductivity leading to protection of
the underlying soft tissue
2. Lower strength which can lead to the denture
being easily broken therefore must be
constructed bulky and in thick sections to gain
enough strength.
Disadvantages of temporary removable
partial denture
3. Lack of adequate indirect retention due to
absence of rests.
4. Unnecessary tissue coverage because of strength
considerations because the lower the strength the
more the material used or area covered.
Components of temporary removable
partial denture
A temporary removable partial denture consists of:
1. Acrylic denture base.
2. Acrylic teeth.
3. Wrought wire clasp.
Acrylic denture base
The main material used for fabrication of the
temporary. The base acts as connector, support and
retention. It also acts as a carrier to the artificial acrylic
teeth.
Acrylic teeth
Are attached to the acrylic base by chemical bonding.
They provide the function of mastication and aid in
speaking.
Wrought wire clasps
A. Simple circlet clasp: Use teeth adjacent to
edentulous ridge.
B. Adam's crib: Use on molar and premolar
when on edentulous.
