12 Ws 8-10 PDF

The document consists of a daily worksheet for XII Physics, focusing on nuclear reactions, binding energy, and the processes of nuclear fission and fusion. It includes questions on energy conservation in nuclear reactions, calculations of energy released during nuclear fragmentation, and the binding energy per nucleon for specific nuclei. Additionally, it requires the drawing of graphs and analysis of the binding energy curve to understand nuclear forces and energy release mechanisms.

1) If the total number of neutrons & protons in a nuclear reaction is conserved, how is then the energy is
absorbed or evolved in the reaction?
2) A nucleus with mass number A = 240 and BE/A= 7.6 MeV breaks in to two fragments each of A= 120 with
BE/A= 8.5 MeV. Calculate the energy released.
3) Calculate the binding energy per nucleon of a 40Ca20 nucleus. (Given, Mass of 40Ca20= 39.962589 u, Mass of
proton= 1.007825 u, Mass of neutron =1.008665 u & 1u= 931 MeV/c2)
4) Draw a plot of binding energy per nucleon (B.E/A) as a function of mass number A.
(a) Write salient features of this curve.
(b) Write two important conclusions that can be drawn regarding the nature of nuclear force.
(c) Use this graph to explain the release of energy in both the processes of nuclear fission and fusion.
5) The figure shows the plot of binding energy(BE) per nucleon as a
function of mass number A. Point out, giving reasons, the two
processes (in terms of A, B, C, D and E), one of which can occur due to
nuclear fission and the other due to nuclear fusion.
