General Repair Requirements

Service Inspection & Repair Page: 1 of 1

All Schwing-manufactured products shall be welded by individuals who have satisfactorily completed all requirements
stated within Schwing document 30007100.

Unless explicitly written otherwise from Schwing, the following requirements are applicable for repairs:

1. Preparation - for tacking and final welding, repair region shall be clean and dry, free of paint, grease, oil, dirt, etc.
For cracks, grind 1/2" beyond both ends to full material thickness with ~60° included angle for a single-v weld.
material thickness shall not be reduced by grinding/sanding. Magnetic-particle test (MT) shall be used to assure
complete removal of the crack. Runoff tabs shall be used at beginning and end of weld. Use or location of a weld
backing strip is dependent on the individual repair procedure provided by Schwing. Do not air arc or torch. No open
root repairs allowed.

2. Heating - preheat and interpass temperature control for welding is mandatory. Preheat weld area a minimum of 4”
each side of weld joint, longer hold times dependent upon material thickness. Maximum of 400°F temperature shall
be determined 1” distance from the welding.

3. Welding - DCEP (reverse) polarity welding machine. Maximum width stringer pass is 3/16”; no weaving allowed.
Vertical down not allowed. Grind between each weld pass. There shall be no welding within 1” of any formed corner
unless it has a weld backing strip per SAIE 5126. Final MT shall be completed 36 hours after welding. Most
structural weldments possess an I.D. tag that identifies the highest material grade utilized in a weldment;
additional material grades may be present, this must be verified through a Schwing Repair Procedure
Request Form (ID 30007009).

Welding electrodes shall be from a hermetically-sealed container; maintenance temperatures are according to the
