INTRODUCTION
● WHAT EXACTLY IS ZEN ?
● The word Zen is the Japanese pronunciation of
the Chinese term ‘Ch’an’ which in its turn is
actually the Chinese way of pronouncing
‘Dhyana’, the Sanskrit word for the concept of
meditation
Asian Zen interior design is a style that focuses on emphasizing a
sense of harmony, balance, tranquility, and simplicity in your
home.

It draws inspiration from both the concept of Zen and the


importance of incorporating nature into your décor, often found in
Asian homes.

The result is a unique interior style that’s simple and minimal but
also features rich layers
HISTORY OF ASIAN ZEN INTERIOR DESIGN
● The Asian Zen design style originates from a mixture of ‘Zhenshuiyo’, a
type of Japanese Buddhist architectural style, and Chinese Sang Dynasty
architecture. A part of Buddhism is actually called ‘Zen’, and it is through
them that this design style is believed to have first come to Japan. It
originated in the twelfth or thirteenth century.

Oriental design referred to both artistic and functional


features of items from the nations of east asia.

The catchment usually referred to product from china,


Japan and other surrounding countries such as
Vietnam or Thailand.

Over time as the influence of Asian culture has become


more noticeable in western design.
COMMON CHARACTERISTICS OF ORIENTAL DESIGN
● WOOD & PORCELAIN
● Historic Asian design often relived heavily on two materials wood is a common
feature of much antique furniture from around the world.
● Porcelain is perhaps Asian culture biggest influence in the world of design
having been a secret of the Chinese civilisation for hundreds of years before
reaching Europe.
● Silks
● Silks is another material that was first developed in China before slowly moving
west through India , before reaching Europe . Both India and China are the
biggest producers of silk in the world .

Calligraphy is art of writing it has been apart of many
cultures across the world. But Particulary in east
Asia.
In China, Korea, Japan and many move east Asian
nations calligraphy plays a large role in the modern
art scene . It is commonly done in paper with a
black ink.
FLOWERS
Throughout the history of many civilisations ,
flowers are used as powerful method of
symbolism.
Lotus flower which is connected to blossoms, which
are prominent in the arts of Chain an Japan .
The flowers are used to represent the beauty and
shortness of human life.
Animals
Every culture across the world has
certain animals to which it
connects.

These Chinese dragon is perhaps


the most common example.

In Indian culture the elephant plays


a significant role both religiously
and as general symbol of strength
