8. What is meant by cement?


Cement is a binder, a substance that sets and hardens independently, and can bind
other materials together. Calcinated product known as clinker is pulverized with gypsum to
form a fine powder is known as cement.
Cement is obtained by burning a mixture of calcareous and argillaceous materials.
9. Write down any four properties of cement.
* It gives strength to masonry
* It is an excellent binding material.
* It is easily workable.
* It offers good resistance to moisture.
* It possesses a good plasticity.

10. List out types of cement.


* Portland cement
* High alumina cement
* Super sulphate cement
* Natural cement

11. Write down any four examples of Portland cement ?


Examples of Portland cements are; (Evaluate any four)
-Ordinary Portland cement
-Rapid hardening cement
-Quick setting Portland cement
-Low heat Portland cement
-White and coloured Portland cement
-Hydrophobic Portland cement
-Portland pozzolana cement

12. Write any four uses of cement.


* Cement mortar is used for masonry work, plastering, pointing, etc.
* Cement concrete is used for laying floors, roofs and construction lintels, beams, weather
sheds, stairs, pillars, etc.
* Construction of engineering structures such as bridges, culverts, dams, tunnels, storage
reservoir, light houses, docks harbors, runways, etc.
* Construction of water tanks, wells, tennis courts, septic tanks, lamp posts, roads, telephone
cabins, etc.
* Making joints for drains, pipes, etc.
* Manufacturing of precast pipes, piles, garden seats, flower pots, dust bins, fencing posts,
etc.

13. Write any four qualities of good brick.


* Brick should be free from cracks, wraps and with sharp and square edges.
* Brick should be uniform in shape and should be of standard size.
* Brick should give clear ringing sound when struck with each other.
* Brick should be sufficiently hard.
* Brick should have low low thermal conductivity.

14. Write the operations for manufacturing of bricks.

15.What is the main difference between fine aggregate and coarse aggregate?
The grain size of fine aggregate limited to 0.15mm to 4.75mm but the grain size of
coarse aggregate limited to 4.75mm to 50mm.

16. Write any four uses of timber.


* For construction purposes: building construction, doors, windows, ventilators etc.
* For railways: sleepers, coaches and wagons.
* For furniture: tables, chairs, cabinets etc.
* For form work: centering for RCC works.
*For miscellaneous articles: musical instruments, toys, hand tools, sport goods etc.
*For transportation: construction of carts, boats, temporary bridges etc.

17. What are the classifications of wood or timber?


1. Soft wood, Pine wood or coniferous wood
2. Hard wood, leaf wood or non coniferous wood.

18. What are the four qualities (properties) of good timber ?


- A good timber should be free from serious defects such as knots, flaws, shakes etc.
- A good timber should be durable.
- A good timber should be hard.
- The colour of timber preferably dark.
- A good timber should be workability.
- A good timber should have straight fibres.
- A good timber should not deteriorate easily due to mechanical wear and abrasion.
- A good timber is a bad conductor of heat.
- A good timber should give out a clear ringing sound when struck. etc (any four)
