(c) You are doing an experiment on the refraction of light in your Physics laboratory. [3]
ABCD is a rectangular block. A ray of light is incident obliquely on the surface AB.
i. Draw the path of the ray of light through the glass block and also show how
it emerges from the block. [The diagram should show the lateral displacement
suffered by the ray.

i. What is the potential energy of the pendulum at the position Y?


ii. What is the total mechanical energy at point Z?

(a) The Given figure shows the combination of a movable pulley P1 with a fixed pulley [3]
P2 used for lifting up a load W.

i. State the function of the fixed pulley P2 .


ii. If the free end of the string moves through a distance x,Find the distance by which
the load W raised.
iii. Calculate the force to be applied at C to just raise the load W = 20 kgf,neglecting
the weight of the pulley P1 and friction.
(b) A force of 15 N is required to pull up a body of mass 2 kg through a distance of 5 m [4]
along an inclined plane making angle 30◦ . Calculate:

i. Work done by the force in pulling the body


ii. Force due to gravity on the body
iii. The work done against force of gravity. (g = 10ms−2 )
iv. Account for the difference in parts ‘a’ and ‘c’.
(c) For each of the following scenarios,state whether work done by gravity is positive,negative [3]
or zero.

ii. a person climbs a ladder
iii. a car in neutral gear is coming down the slope.
