Squiggle Squad Handwriting Readiness
Tracing Activities
Finger Students first use their index finger to complete the “Hidden Finger
to Crayon Paths,” “Stroke Playsheets” and the “Finger Trace” playsheets. By
starting with finger tracing activities, students are developing the motor
skills needed to begin writing while becoming familiar with the alphabet
and numbers.
Challenge your young student to trace the pathways with an index finger starting on the blue start
spot and stopping where the path ends.
Once they are able to control arm and hand, have your student trace the same pathways again
using a crayon.
Provide encouragement and opportunity for young students to practice every day, and watch their
motor skills gradually improve.
Children can practice letter strokes by tracing the pathways on the

playsheets. These paths were designed to give new writers a bit of
Control
wiggle room as they learn to control the fine muscles of their hand and
fingers. Take your child through each of the five Squiggle Squad stroke
sheets, helping them practice the basic strokes needed to begin writing
letters and numbers.
As their bodies grow, their ability to stay inside the paths with their finger or crayon will improve.
During this developmental stage, have your student trace and name the letters of the alphabet.
Take time to introduce each letter and its strokes.
